For the last 2 years we saw some IT designers developing the concept of Color Blocking. Louis Vuitton launched its latest spring/summer bag collection around this aesthetics. But, what is Color blocking?
Color blocking is a technique where blocks of various fabrics are sewn together to create clothing with a few different solid colors. Several brands explored this theme. The principle is to use solid colors, specially the complementary ones in the color wheel. Make up, Apparel but also architecture and Design used this theme in a very successful and trendy way. We can see that some of the fashion brands like Gucci, Prada or Fendi based their summer collection on different interpretation of this theme and according to these brands artistic direction it makes quite sense. But for other brands it looks a little more “out of the frame”.

It is the case, for me, of Louis Vuitton with its latest Spring/Summer Bags collection. It is a perfect example of Color blocking, executed at its perfection. The question is do we want Vuitton to go into this direction? Not so sure as when we look to this collection, we have the feeling to see a Fendi collection. Of course a strong brand like Vuitton should be able to revist any theme, but we should be able to identify specific codes that are part of the Brand DNA. Here it is not so obvious. By reviewing the Trapeze bag, the baguette or the avant-garde bag, the brand transposed its legendary style into a impacting design. The models I present here have a sort of “Riviera” spirit. The colors choices are beautiful and quite elegant. I am still wondering how to recognize Vuitton here but I suppose it answers the needs of a certain clientele. I prefer the work they did on the Cruise collection. Summer is already here… smile.
