If you are travelling to the UK from overseas, hiring a car is often one of the best options for getting around. If you are planning to live in the UK for a long-term stay, you may even be considering purchasing a car of your own so that you can explore the country at your own pace and get around without having to rely on costly public transport or taxis. However, in order to drive a car in the UK, you may be required to pass a UK driving test. If you’ve been made aware that you need to pass a driving test in the United Kingdom before you can drive on the roads, here’s everything that you need to know.

Driving Theory

UK learner drivers are required to pass a driving theory test before they are allowed to take their practical driving test. The theory test can be taken at any point during the process of learning to drive, however it’s good to get it out of the way early on in order to fully concentrate on passing your practical test. During the driving theory test, you will be asked a series of questions related to driving and the UK Highway Code. If you don’t know the last thing about UK roads, don’t worry as there are plenty of different learning and revision materials available online, such as this free driving theory practice test site. You will also be required to take a ‘hazard perception’ test, where you will be shown a series of videos and click the mouse when you spot a road hazard, such as a cyclist pulling out of a junction or somebody running across the road.

Learning to Drive

In the UK there are certain laws surrounding who can teach you to drive. If you’re hoping to save money by having a friend teach you, it’s important to ensure that they meet a range of legal criteria before you begin. If you are not learning to drive with a qualified driving instructor, the driver giving lessons to you must be over the age of twenty-one and have held their driving license for at least three years. You will also need to get provisional insurance on the car which you will be learning to drive in, and you will be required to display a red ‘R’ sign when driving. Remember that in the UK, it is illegal for learner drivers to drive on motorways. Alternatively, hiring a trained, qualified driving instructor is one of the safest and most efficient ways to learn to drive.

Passing the Test

Once you have applied for and received your provisional UK driving license, it’s time to start working towards passing your driving test. Once you have passed the theory test, you will be able to book the practical part of your driving test, which by passing, will gain you your UK license. It’s good to take as much time as you need to prepare for your practical test and make sure that you are confident with all aspects of driving before booking to be in with the best chance of a first-time pass.

Learning to drive in the UK has a whole set of rules and laws which every learner driver should adhere to.
