## In brief
An essential needs to work with clothes already in the wardrobe. Put the whole outfit together when choosing it, including shoes and a coat. Frequent wear also means these clothes need to feel comfortable and be easy enough to care for.
A white shirt bought for a suit needn’t stay with it. Wear it with jeans, roll the cuffs back above a bracelet, or let the collar show over a cardigan. Those possibilities make an apparently ordinary garment worth choosing carefully.
I believe we all need essentials. They should make getting dressed easier and bring some elegance to the clothes worn most often. The difficulty begins when “essential” becomes a reason to buy something whose role in the wardrobe remains unclear.
## Under the jacket
With charcoal trousers and a blazer, an ivory jersey T-shirt keeps the neckline plain. For a cotton shirt, leave the collar showing above the lapels. A fine cardigan can be worn buttoned up as a top with the same trousers.
The blazer could also be worn open over a silk blouse tucked into straight indigo jeans. A gently wide wool trouser brings movement below a relatively simple upper half. Bring the shoes along when having the hem adjusted, particularly if the trousers will usually be worn with flats.
In 1985, Donna Karan put the bodysuit at the centre of her Essentials line. A woman could add layers and combine the pieces in different ways. A fluid midi skirt is also easier to assess as part of an outfit, with its knitwear, shoes and coat beside it.
## The dress needs a purpose
A dark dress in matte crêpe gives you most of an outfit in one go. With little decoration, it leaves room for different jewellery, shoes and jackets. Its neckline and sleeves need to work with the underwear you intend to wear.
A dress won’t be useful to everyone. Someone who regularly chooses trousers may have greater use for another well-cut pair. “Must-have” leaves room for that decision.
For a single-breasted blazer, check where its hem falls against the skirt or dress. A coat needs to close comfortably over that jacket. Loafers and ballet flats can be worn day to day; low-heeled boots may be useful in colder weather. Walk around in the shoes before choosing them for long days on foot.
## After the first wear
If keeping a pale shirt clean and pressed takes more time than its owner can give it, it may stay on its hanger.
WRAP’s guidance on making clothes last covers fabric quality, fit, care and repairs. Extra cloth inside a seam may allow an alteration later. Replaceable fastenings and washing instructions that are easy to follow are useful details in something intended for regular wear.
Comfort needs checking in motion. Sit down with the shirt buttoned and look for pulling between the buttons. A short walk in the skirt can reveal whether it twists. Discovering either before purchase leaves time to try another cut.
Let a tailor look at the sleeves or waistband before replacing a piece that no longer fits. An adjustment may be enough to wear it again with the clothes already in the wardrobe.
