Diesel + EDUN Studio Africa: Uviwe Mangweni

South African photojournalist Uviwe Mangweni has a way of getting so close to her subjects that you can almost see them breathe. Having grown up in Cape Town, she now lives in the creative centre of Johannesburg where her focus is on documenting the places and moments that most people miss. One early project took her to the ex-mining town of Durban Deep - a run-down locale largely overlooked by cosmopolitan Johannesburg - where she spent a week with its people who scratch out a living with the most basic of amenities. More recently, back in the city, she took her camera to the dozens of hair salons in the business district to capture the hum and buzz of these social hubs. Dazed caught up with Uviwe to find out more about her work, what makes something catch her eye and where she wants to take her camera in the future.

What drew you to using a camera to tell a story?
Mostly being bored with life in my university days and just wanting to get out there and create something. A youthful restlessness I suppose.

Who in the world of photojournalism are you inspired by and why?
To be honest I never aspired to be like anyone, I just did what I did because I felt like it. But when I began understanding the significance of photography, especially in South Africa, I began looking up to the legends like Peter Magubane and Alf Khumalo.

You often shoot in black and white - what drives that?
That usually comes in the editing process. I don’t know, maybe I have a bit of an old soul that wants to recreate the same depth and feeling we see in historical images. But I do shoot in color a lot too.

There's a very intimate, relaxed quality to your photographs. Is that something you look to achieve?
Yeah, I try to capture people in their most natural way of being. I want to be invisible to them.

What was the idea behind your black hair salon series?
Black hair salons are all over the city of Johannesburg. It feels like there is literally one on every block. One day when I was doing my hair as I frequently do, I just thought about how they are huge part of the socio-economic landscape but they’re hardly captured or recognized.

What is about them that fascinates you?
One can't ignore those colorful murals used to advertise the salons. It's interesting cause they all depict international celebrities and hip hop artists and, a lot of the time, a hairstyle will be named after these celebrities. Also fascinated by how so many salons will occupy the same area in the CBD [the central business district] and almost all of them will survive as a business.

What was your eye drawn to when you photographed them?
I was drawn to the characters in the space at the time and how they interact with one another. There's always a little bit of drama or comedy in cases where the hairstyle did not come out the way it was supposed to.

Could you give a little background to the ex-mining town you photographed?
Durban Deep is an ex-mining town off Main Reef Road, West of Johannesburg. People who reside there are mostly migrants from neighboring cities and countries. They get on with life with no electricity and communal water pumps. It felt ghostly, a stark reminder of SA’s brutal past and how far we still have to go as a country in terms of real redistribution.

How did the town's inhabitants feel about you photographing them?
Initially people were uncomfortable, one would walk past and some people would shut their doors at the sight of a lens. But I kept going back and the more I related to them and explained what my mission was, the more they opened up. Just basic human decency and respect gets you a long way.

Are there other sides of Johannesburg you would like to document?
Yes, I would like to capture more stories that project the vibrance and rich creative culture in this city.

Where else would you like to take your camera in the future?
(Laughing) I wanna take it everywhere.  But I need to get out more, spend more time on the peripheries of the urban environment.

Moschino AW13

Mixing a soundtrack of Oasis, Blur and a symphony of bagpipes – it was clear there was a real clash of references at Moschino this season. There were micro tartan kilts, double-breasted riding jackets and fringe-heavy suede coats, all given Moschino attitude with the inclusion of oversized gold earrings and gold studded embellishments.

The mini and at times, box-like silhouettes echoed the luxury teenage power dressing of the 90s. Shut up! We're, like, so talking the wardrobe of (now classic) movie 'Clueless'. Whilst this season's colour palette developed with each look, moving from pop reds, to forest greens into a monochromatic ending of black on white.

However, Clueless in the dictionary sense of the word, this was not, with a very considered take on the extra details; the bow ties, the pussy bows and embroidered gold Moschino crests. The fringed leather pouches slung round the waist and the tartan trimmed hats told the story of an Italian Highland fling.

Fashion Roundup: Charlize Theron Shaves Her Head, Karl Lagerfeld Gets Wax Figure, and Stella McCartney Throws Garden Party

Is there something in the water in Hollywood? First Rihanna and now Avril Lavigne has shaved half her head in a new hairstyle reminiscent of a punky glam rocker. She kept the color and length on the other side of her head in the same style. She isn't the only one revamping her look. Charlize Theron has shaved her blond locks for her upcoming movie role in Mad Max: Fury Road. She’s been wearing a beanie or Fedora to cover it up ever since. (Huffington Post)

Karl Lagerfeld is always known for making headlines in fashion, least of which is for his iconic black and white tuxedo look and low ponytail. So it’s no surprise Germany’s St. Pauli Panopticon has opted to preserve the legendary Chanel designer--in wax! The figure features Lagerfeld’s iconic dark sunglasses and black studded gloves. (People)

This isn’t Lagerfeld’s only headline this week. He’s also making headlines for a book of photographs based on Chanel’s Little Black Jacket. The fashion tome is made up of 113 photographs shot by Lagerfeld of models, celebrities, socialites, fashionistas, and personalities styled in the LBJ by former French Vogue Editor-In-Chief Carine Roitfeld. Chanel threw a party to celebrate an exhibit featuring the photos on display from June 8 to June 15. (Harper’s Bazaar)

Maison Martin Margiela is the next high fashion brand to collaborate with H&M! Straight off the heels of the popular team ups with Lanvin, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and Marni, the popular French has created a collection of timeless, streamlined and wearable pieces debuting on November 15. Will we see MMM fans Michelle Obama or Sarah Jessica Parker in one of these pieces? (Stylelite)

Stella McCartney travels around the world to present her collections, turning up in both England and Paris on occasions. She took to New York to showcase her Resort 2013 presentation, throwing a sweet summer party in a garden for the occasion. Besides gorgeous clothes, the event attracted a bevy of beauties like Anne Hathaway, Amy Poehler and Solange Knowles. (Fabsugar)

Castro Fall / Winter 2012-13 Fashion Show Featuring Gal Gadot

Israeli clothing giant, Castro, recently presented their new Fall/Winter collection for 2012-2013. FashionTV was front and center at the show in Tel Aviv, which calls for a colorful, stylish, and dramatic Fall/Winter season.

This year's collection is inspired by nostalgic fantasy across time and continents, from old fashioned European ski trips, Agatha Christie novels, and the style from 90’s television show ‘Twin Peaks’ to historical gothic era of medieval times.

Castro’s headlining model and spokesperson is popular Israeli model/actress Gal Gadot, who has appeared alongside Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in the Fast & Furious movies. Gadot, opened the show in a double-breasted brown trench coat along with sexy knee high boots. She was joined by Castro’s male headliner Yonatan Wegman.

Castro’s new winter collection is a brilliant combination of mystery and travel. Inspiration came from Eastern European heritage and folklore along with some gothic history. The result is a winter collection full of presence, rich textures, wool coats and dip effect. The collection is accompanied by touches of gold elements, specifically on military uniform coats and wool pants.

Additional fabrics such as nylon was in presence, designed with colorful quilt. Four separate lines were featured on the runway, BLUE Women, BLUE Men, RED Men and BLACK. Originally, the BLACK line was launched in the previous season and has already been known to give customers sophistication and trendiness to one’s personal style.

This year, models walked down the runway in leather trench coats, high-waisted leather flowy skirts and black velvet slim dresses with a low neckline. Thin and light transparent chiffon was delivered along with cropped camel-colored suits, burgundy shades and silk scarves. The runway also included hues of plum, teal, beige, brown and of course a whole lot of black. From pencil skirts to trench coats, the audience was completely surrounded in dramatic leather.

For men, Castro created trendy and elegant formalwear full of tailored silhouettes and strict suiting. Accessories included biker boots, umbrellas, wool scarves, leather gloves and oxford shoes.

Gadot and Wegman closed the show, strutting down the catwalk in full on black. Gadot sported a sweetheart draped gown and Wegman stunned in a black-collared trench coat over black suiting.

Beauty spot: black-cherry lips

Black magic: tap into your inner goth with black-cherry lips. Photograph: Observer

If you're going to wear make-up, then you might as well really, really wear it. Catwalk make-up at the mo' is either "natural" (bit of Vaseline, a pinch of the cheek and the winsome eyes of someone far more virginal than you've ever been) or full-on looks, for which the statement lip is key. I say statement lip, but in the late 90s we just called it Rimmel black cherry and slopped it on on the bus. Now, we fill in the whole lip with pencil, topped off with Tom Ford's Black Orchid (36, harveynichols.com), which, despite costing more than a Michelin meal, is so rich with pigment you only need a single slick. It's like the black-cherry lipstick of our youth, but grown up and married to a millionaire.
