Creatures of the Wind: Oh Make Me Over

Creatures of The Wind's Shane Gabier and Chris Peters, Chicago's finest, are big on the mood and feeling, their story not about one garment but how it all segues together to create a bigger picture. Styled by Dazed & Confused's fashion editor Emma Wyman, enjoy this beauty transformation during prep for the show as a taster, and come back tomorrow for the collection report.

Iris Van Herpen Couture SS13

Iris Van Herpen is the first digital couturier, embracing technology and playing with the tension of adding the mechanical, the technological to the ever-so romantic art of high fashion.

In a huge circular salon at the Paris Intercontinental, a stone's throw from the Opra Garnier, the Dutch designer was inspired by her childhood dream to create and control lightning. We were treated to a performance of exactly that by a moving statue on a podium, setting the ambience for the pulsating beat of the show.

Van Herpen, interviewed in the February issue of Dazed, deals with science and biology to create her powerful world. She's the first couturier to employ 3D printing in a collection, with the latest multi-material technology contracting a skirt and cape that's both hard and soft in a single build, drawing on the multidimensionalism that human petit mains offer.

With such fantastic aspiration, Van Herpen is aware of the need to give her work a more tangible context. The clue to that was in the seating and exit music, by Grimes, who is also the face of the designer's new ready-to-wear campaign. In Clare Boucher she's found a pop muse to carry it off.

RYAT – Owl

In the February Issue of Dazed & Confused, Los Angeles-based producer RYAT enlisted as part of our 'University of Yorke' series featuring 14 electronic producers who posed their personal questions to our coverstar, Radiohead and Atoms For Peace frontman Thom Yorke.

Having made first impressions by landing on Flying Lotus' illustrious Brainfeeder label, RYAT makes gritty avant-garde beats as can be heard in the exclusive premiere of the new video for her track 'Owl' (above). Experimenting with classical and cinematic sounds with unexpected time signatures, her leftfield approach to music means merging her own processed vocals to create intense and abstract artforms. The video for the track 'Owl' is taken from her album 'Totem' where every track was a representation of a different spirit animal. Currently, she's embarking on a film project called 'Light Soldier', an avant-garde short featuring Angel Deradoorain (Dirty Projectors) and Gonjasufi where the score will form her next LP.

Music 2012 – your favourites

Wild Nothing 'Nocturne' Album Premiere
Dream-pop maven Wild Nothing (aka Jack Tatum) exclusively shared his second album 'Nocturne' with Dazed readers in August, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2010's 'Gemini'. The album is a narcotic listen, with all Tatum's trademark luxe layers, but with a more refinedmelodic focus on the80s phaser-pop of 'Paradise' and the irresistible 'Shadow'. "The theme for the album is a kind of drowsy, delirious-type feeling," Tatum explained in the accompanying interview. A few months on, it still feels pretty good.

Brooke Candy - 'Das Me' Video Premiere
"Treat my pussy like a meal," proposed rapper Brooke Candy in her debut single, though how you get to it around the gold-plated armour is anyone's guess. Candy also hooked up with Count Mack and Grimes in 2012, but it was the provocative performer's'Das Me' video premiere in October which really got people talking. Love her or hate her, the stats spoke for themselves, and 'Das Me' was Dazed's fourth most-viewed music article of the year.

Grimes: 21st Century Girl
For the first press appearance around her brilliant album 'Visions', Hedi Slimane shot Grimes in Givenchy couture for our April cover, styled by Robbie Spencer. Subsequently came the iconic videos for 'Oblivion' and 'Genesis', live appearances worldwide, and a cavalcade of public and critical acclaim. For our feature, Ruth Saxelby visited Vancouver to hang out with Claire Boucher (aka Grimes), who told her: "If there's anything that would mean something to me as an artist, I would want to be part of the cultural dialogue. That would be my dream." 2012 was the year she achieved this.

Soulwax – DAVE (film premiere)
Soulwax – the pair of Belgian DJs who whose 2ManyDJs mixes soundtracked a thousand first-year house parties in the dawning years of the naughties – dropped in in October with the latest in their longrunning Radio Soulwax project. An hourlong, slyly affectionate take on the style and musc ofDavid Robert Jones, it features model Hannelore Knuts and more Bowie covers than your mum's teenage wall. Let's dance!

Azealia Banks Blows Up
"Azealia Banks gets reactions," we wrote as we launched our September issue with the image of the mermaid-haired rap princess blowing up a pink condom. But we didn't have any idea of the real fuss it would cause, as the cover made global headlines and went on to be banned in seven countries. For the feature, our regular New York correspondent Karley Sciortino spent the day with Banks, where the rapper was as frank with her views on sexuality and other MCs as she was forthright about her opinions on the shoot's food, clothes and make-up. Azealia's cover wasn't just the most-viewed music article of the site, but the most popular piece across all of Dazed Digital in 2012. And in October, Banks proved why she was the most talked-about rapper this year when she brought the Mermaid Ball to London, delivering voguing, dipping and fire-spitting, all in a 30-inch raspberry weave and light-up bra.

Marcelo Burlon’s pick of Givenchy Fall 2013 menswear

Riccardo Tisci's Fall Givenchy menswear collection, in store summer 2013, focuses on the designer's essential wardrobe ingredients: plaid, prints, contrasting fabrics and engineered cuts.

Reinforcing the language Tisci has established at the maison, the lookbook was shot at a motorcycle workshop, with biker garb and meatpackers’ imagery informing the line-up, which swaps Rottweilers for Dobermans (a fierce but noble dog is for a collection, not just for life).

"Digitally hand-painted Dobermans, the 'Pervert 17' American football sweater and gold studded Derby shoes are some of my highlights from this collection," friend of both Tisci and Dazed, the man in Milan Marcelo Burlon tells us. "New to Riccardo's menswear this time areblue jeans, pushing forward the Givenchy attitude whilst remaining loyal to the spirit he represents."

Here we present Marcelo's favourite looks from the collection in a special edit by the DJ, PR, stylist, editor and all-round creative.

Angelababy covershoot

Shot by Nicola's frequent collaborator Matt Irwin is Angelababy, the stunning and lively actress from Hong Kong, who was first scouted as a model. Nicola Formichetti styled and directed her on set, whilst Cycy Sanders captured the moment, editing this, one of a number of behind-the-scenes vids for Dazed Digital. Take a look at the video above, and the shoot below, taken from the December issue of Dazed & Confused.
