J. M. Weston, the new Dandy has arrived

In terms of Masculine elegance, J. M. Weston is definitely a reference. You can ask any man around the world to quote 2 or 3 Shoes brand and you can be sure Weston will be one of them.  The great work of this manufacture over the years has proved that doing things in the right way always pays. Here is what JM Weston has been up to and you will see, the revival of the dandy is stronger than never.

J. M. Weston, a matter of excellence at work.

The story of this amazing luxury brand would start in 1891 when Edouard Blanchard founds a workshop in Limoges that specializes in manufacturing shoes. Then, the beginning of the new century opened the doors of traveling and his son, Eugène Blanchard decides to travel to the USA to learn the goodyear welting. It was in the city of Weston, close to Boston that he learned all the secrets of good shoe-making. In 1922 the brand J. M. Weston is created and the first store in Paris is opened.
JM-Weston-history

The success of J.M. Weston is also due to the fact they master the entire process, from the leather to the shoe making. All Made in France at the state of the art. Here is a film that explains the entire process at the Manufacture and the Tannerie. It is amazing to see how many steps exist to create a pair of shoes. In the film, everything starts with a creative idea from the Artistic Director of the House, Michel Perry. And each step is simply perfect.

Michel Perry, the creative mind behind the elegance of J. M. Weston.

Since 2001, Michel Perry has been designing the collection for J.M.Weston and thanks to his strong taste for elegance he was able to remain faithful to the Luxury house style and heritage. He successfully improved the different collections and brought a new wind of creativity to the Brand. The Brand’s name might sound anglo-saxon but the style is 100% pure Parisian chic. From casual mocassins to Business dandy and Derby Golfers, you can find the perfect shoes for you.

Michel Perry has a sharp pencil. Every new draw reflects an unlimited taste for an elegant allure. The lines are precise and there is always something to say about every shoe he designed during the past 13 years. Style is a pure matter of talent.

J.M. Weston, the Mocassin went from a simple Shoe to a fashion icon.

According to the Brand, the Mocassin is a cultural reference, symbol of the “Drugstore Gang” generation, and firmly established in the French heritage. A true icon, the moccasin is an integral part of J.M. Weston’s history. Made in Limoges, available in seven widths per half size, its crafting has remained unchanged since 1946. It is a model that can be reinterpreted indefinitely, to meet the needs and desires of each new generation.

JM-Weston-Mocassin

The definition of a Mocassin, as Wikipedia explains,  is a shoe, made of deerskin or other soft leather, consisting of a sole and sides made of one piece of leather, stitched together at the top, and sometimes with a vamp (additional panel of leather). The sole is soft and flexible and the upper part often is adorned with embroidery or beading. Historically, it is the footwear of many indigenous peoples of North America; moreover, hunters, traders, and European settlers wore them.  The oldest moccasin was dated 5’500 years old.
Historical-Mocassin

From the famous black Mocassin from Michael Jackson, Presidents, Business men and other dandies, the Mocassin became part of the basics in terms of masculine elegance. It is one of the classics that any gentleman needs to have in their garde-robe. Of course J.M. Weston has different variations from the Mocassin or Loafer. Here some examples so that you can appreciate the amazing pure lines.

J.M. Weston, a luxury house that is a true inspiration for Artists.

J.M.Weston has an amazing richness in terms of shoes creation. Several new models have populated the Brand Catalog and some of them are truly jewels of the masculine elegance. From the iconic Loafers, to Ankle boots, Oxfords, Derbys and Trainers.

J.M.Weston often opens its doors to outstanding collaborations with other artists, friends of the House.  Here are some examples of such collaborations. One of the first collaborations was with Jean Charles Castelbajac who revisited the iconic Loafer with the French designer iconic colors.

A more recent collaboration was with Maison Kitsuné in 2011. When Kitsuné got its hands on J.M. Weston’s classics to create a new interpretation of them, the narrative drew on an imaginary American straight out of the Hamptons. Here is the video talking about the collaboration.

2014, J.M. Weston invites Charlie Casey Hayford.

Truthful to its habit of inviting great artists to collaborate in a special collection, J.M. Weston invites this year Charlie Casey Hayford. You can be sure that the result can only be outstanding.

JM-Weston-Charlie-Casey-Hayford

Charlie Casey Hayford is a fashion child. During his studies in the prestigious Saint Martin School, he is approached by the popular Japanese menswear title Men’s Non-No to document his personal style in a street-style feature, which appeared on a monthly basis over a three-year period. He began working with other Japanese publications and went on to contribute to a number of styling projects. He now styles and consults on a number of projects internationally. He founded international menswear brand Casely-Hayford at the age of 22 with his father, the acclaimed British fashion designer Joe Casely-Hayford.
Charlie-Casey-Hayford

But how Charlie Casey Hayford met J.M. Weston? According to Cédric Dauch, Communication Director of J.M. Weston: “this collaboration is the result of a natural process in J.M. Weston: Giving a voice to young artists and support when the values of two houses seem common. Charlie Casely Hayford is the son of a tailor and this link between generations is a strong element of DNA at J.M. Weston“.

It was during a dinner when Michel Perry met Charlie Casey Hayford. The stream between the 2 creators flew naturally. They decided to collaborate together. The first result was during the very first fashion show by Caseley-Hayford at London’s fashion week. J.M. Weston accessorized all the models with Shoes. The 2 brand universes have a natural fit, so the next step was the invitation by J.M. Weston to collaborate in a sort of Capsule Shoes collection.

Influenced by common references, Michel Perry and Charlie Casely-Hayford chose to rethink the iconic references of J.M. Weston. Created in the 30s, they were already echoes of a british trend blowing on Paris at that time: a bridge between France and England was born. J.M. Weston therefore draw its inspiration in this sporty chic style, echoing a lifestyle conveyed by the English aristocracy, fond of hunting parties and other outdoor activities.

According to J.M. Weston, the result of this collaboration could be described as France meets England. Indeed, the French elegance is through this collaboration, pigmented with the British humor and eccentricity. Charlie Casely-Hayford reinterprets in his own way, the famous Prince of Wales pattern, traditionally used in the manufacture of English dandies suits. He affixes here on dual and triple sole derbies, by offering two color tones of black and white. It also grows originality by offering a version where a metal calf strip underscores the shape of the shoe, with reference to the shoes worn by Ska followers, omnipresent in England in the 60s.

Rory photography was already seen in Wallpaper, GQ, L’Officiel, Re-Bel, Arena Homme+ or T Mag. Rory Van Millingen is also used to work with Charlie Casey Hayford for his own Brand Caseley-Hayford.

Seven Days Exploring Sardinia and Sicily by Superyacht

0
Reading Time: 4 minutes

The autonomous Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily, with their Mediterranean climate and ancient European charm provide a lovely location for a week of exploration by superyacht. Gourmet delights, wonderfully crumbling architecture and picture-perfect beaches all await those visiting the islands.
The largest of the Mediterranean’s islands, Sicily is known for its natural beauty and many fascinating historical sites, while the slightly smaller Sardinia, with its azure waters and powdery sand, is a beach-lover’s paradise. Curated by Captain Sputh of MY Starfire, a 178′ Benetti superyacht for charter, here are seven days exploring Sardinia and Sicily by superyacht.

MY-Starfire-Water-Sports-71

Day One: Palermo

Palermo is the place to start for true immersion into traditional Sicilian living. Tour the city’s and marvel at its plethora of historical sites. Visit Palermo Cathedral to experience a history of the city’s different architectural styles, all within one building. Pause regularly in between sight-seeing for refreshment in the sunshine at one of the pretty cafés that are liberally scattered throughout the Palermo’s streets.

Day Two: San Vito Lo Capo

Leave city life behind in order to appreciate the spectacular beauty of nature at San Vito Lo Capo. Catch some sun on the popular beach while gazing up at the impressive mountains that border it on two sides. Those who want a day of activity can spend hours scrambling up the mountains, learning about local flora and fauna, while those who prefer a more restful experience can await their return on the beach, drink in hand.

Day Three: Marettimo

Head west of Sicily next to visit the traditional island of Marettimo. The pretty port is backed by a cluster of stone and whitewashed houses that encapsulate the charm of the island, but to truly enjoy Marettimo’s offerings head around to the western coast for pristine swimming spots accessible only by boat. A range of delightful grottoes are also available for those wishing to indulge in a day of water-based exploration.

Day Four: Cagliari

Stop off in Sardinia next, starting at the capital city of Cagliari for a day of culture, gourmet cuisine and shopping. The city also boasts a wide range of historical sites, providing something to suit everyone’s tastes. For dinner, experience the sensory delights of modern Italian cuisine at its best at one of Cagliari’s many bustling restaurants.

Day Five: Tortoli

Leave the city lights behind once more and head to Tortoli on Sardinia’s eastern coast to appreciate the rugged, natural beauty of the island. With little more than a cluster of villages seemingly happy to be stuck forever in days gone by, Tortoli is a great location for rambling around in the wilderness. Be sure to visit the ancient San Gemiliano Tower as part of your explorations.

Day Six: Posada

One of Sardinia’s most attractive towns, Posada presents a mixture of cobbled streets, twisting passageways and ancient buildings that cannot fail to delight. Navigate your way around the castle ruins in the well-preserved medieval hilltop town centre, stopping every now and then to admire the spectacular views in every direction.

Day Six: Secluded Cove

To give you a moment of respite, your Captain will simply anchor off in a secluded bay where no one else is around. Spend the day either enjoying the peace and tranquillity from the sundeck or jump off into the azure waters for a little summer time water sport fun.

Day Seven: Porto Cervo

For an indulgent final day, visit the glitzy town or Porto Cervo for a day of serious shopping, fine dining and general luxury. Be sure to leave plenty of time to take in the stunning beach as well, as it’s one of the finest on the island.
Captain Carl Sputh of MY Starfire invites you to charter a superyacht in either the Caribbean or Mediterranean to discover excellence at sea.

Hermes will always surprise us as they have the way of making us dream in ways that we would not expect. This year they revealed in Baselworld, an amazing timepiece called Hermes Dressage L’Heure Masquée (time veiled in french). You can discover our full watch review here. Inspired The principle is as simple as beautiful. The watch owner plays again with the perception of time and decides when he wishes to display it. The hours hand is hidden behind the minutes hand and circle the dial once every sixty minutes. To reveal time, the owner need to press the crown of the watch so the hours hand get to the accurate time position. When the user releases the crown, that hour hand disappears once again directly behind the minute hand.

Romain Gauthier, Logical One Secret

Romain Gauthier Logical one secret

Romain Jerome Logical One Secret
It is not new the fact that Romain Gauthier excels in the art of watch-making. This year the genius watch-maker shows his brand in a different angle, the one of Art. With the launch of Logical One Secret, his most complicated watch,  he just has been rewarded by the prize for the Best Men’s Complication Watch at the 2013 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. We discover this extraordinary timepiece in which there is a dual celebration between the pocket watch and the wrist watch. The dial is covered with a cover filled with 181 diamonds done by Atelier Bunter in Geneva. As said previously: state of the art. A gentle squeeze on the pusher at 4 o’clock lifts the cover, revealing the complexity of the multi-patented constant force movement. Accuracy is obtained for this escapement with a fusee (cone in French) and chain regulation system.

Christophe Claret, Margot
Christophe Claret Margot watch

Christophe Claret Margot
Very often, watch-making complications are a more “men’s world” as most of the time technicality prevails on poetry. Of course complications do not have gender but sometimes we might miss a little dream. And here, for the first time you will find a intelligent complication intended to the feminine wrists. Christophe Claret honors a beautiful world of nature and love imagination thanks to Margot. And amazing watch with a daisy flower in the center of the movement and dial. Based on the traditional petals counting “he loves me, he loves me not” you can literally take out the flower petals just by using the right pusher. A very ingenious process allows the magic to occurs.

hysek-furtif-tourbillon

Every single piece, every watch component will contribute to the overall look and aesthetics. So each detail need to be treated as a main component. Hysek revealed a inner beauty at the heart of this magnificent flying tourbillon endowed with a titanium balance. The HW10 Calibre is manual-winding with a 70 hours power reserve. The frequency is 28’800 vph. Limited to 8 pieces.

Cartier, La Panthère Eau de Parfum. Sensual instinct.

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Cartier revealed its new fragrance for women called La Panthère. A true focus in the Brand DNA and main symbol. As usual every single detail is taken care of, and the final result is a very sophisticated yet modern fragrance, created by Mathilde Laurent, in-house Perfumer. They had the Panther out!

The real Panther was her: Jeanne Toussaint.

The Panther is the symbol of Cartier House and you can find it in all activities from Jewelry to  Watch-making and Fragrances. The symbol of the Panther is present in Cartier’s creation from almost the first day. In 1914, Cartier launched a women watch in which the decoration was the illustration of the Panther’s fur. See image below.

Cartier-First-PantherWatch
Cartier 1914 First Watch with Panther symbol

Louis Cartier closest friends was Jeanne Toussaint. She was considered as one of the female personalities at that time in Paris. She was friend with Gabrielle Chanel and Misia Sert, known as the Queen of Paris by the artistic scene. Jeanne Toussaint had a fiery personality and all her friends would call her the Panther. In the 30’s she became the Director of Jewelry for Cartier. And that’s how the Panther started being more obviously introduced in the different creations.

Jeanne-Toussaint-1920-by-Adolf-de-Meyer
Jeanne Toussaint by Adolf de Meyer

Jeanne-Toussaint-La-Panthere

Cartier was the first Jewelry brand to explore the theme of femininity thanks to the allegory of the Panther. In all Cartier’s activities the Panther was developed in many ways, from shapes, to textures, symbols and design. Several years later, in 2012, Cartier marked again a big milestone with the reveal of the institutional film: Cartier L’Odyssee. The DNA of the brand was completely remastered for new generations and the Panther was the common denominator telling the story of the French luxury house as if it was the main ambassador. Decades after the first Panther creation, the symbol is still strong and still vehicles the same message of  sensual elegance.

The Panther in Fragrances, a perfect theme for the perfect Cartier woman.

Already in 1987, Cartier wished to illustrate the Cartier woman with the best fragrance possible. And that was Panthère. The 80’s was a special decade in human history. In deed economy was at the maximum, Golden boys worked with Wonder women and pretty much everything was over the top. Cartier had the plan to personify the Cartier Woman in a fragrance that would represent the Cartier signature. With Must de Cartier in 1981, the Cartier woman was a symbol of elegance, good taste and refinement. Elegance at all levels represented the core spirit of Must. 6 years later, Cartier wished to celebrate the audacity and the sensuality of the Panther with a signature fragrance. And simply call it Panthère.

Cartier-Panthere-1987
Cartier Panthère 1987

It was a voluptuous fragrance built as a sensual White floral bouquet. From the Orange blossom in the top notes, then on the opulent floral heart of Jasmin, Tuberose and Gardenia, this fragrances had a distinctive Oriental trail of Tonka bean, Balms and a hypnotic combination of Patchouli and Sandalwood. In this first edition, the flacon was slightly facetted as  a precious jewel. On top of it, a Panther lay down on the cap the queen of all animals. Panthère is a historical fragrance that you cannot really find easily, probably the brand will discontinue it anyway as the new Panther rises.

Cartier La Panthère, the legend is back stronger than never.

With this new edition, Cartier refocus on the Panther DNA and present a free woman, aware of her magnetic sensuality, always in a cry chic and contemporary mood. Here is the video made by Cartier:

In the movie we discover the model Erin Wasson.  She is a very beautiful woman with a fiery look. She walks in the city night landscape as a Panther. She is wearing all dark blue clothes and a strong make-up around the eyes. The video was directed by Sean Ellis. It is an interesting choice for a director. Sean Ellis is strongly influenced by photography in all films he made. He also signed advertising films for brands like Jean-Paul Gaultier, Rimmel or Roberto Cavalli. So he has a strong feeling for Glamour and to tell a story. He collaborated a lot with I-D, Vogue, The Face or Confused. So he is definitely a hot spot right now.  The print campaign was done by Peter Lindbergh.

La-Panthere-Cartier-Print La-Panthere-Cartier-Peter-Lindbergh

This new fragrance was created as a jewel master-piece.  The flacon itself represents at first-sight a block of crystal facetted as a jewel. It holds a 3D Panther face within the Glass. Beautiful Glass work and an impressive weight in a very qualitative glass. It fills the entire flacon, as if we were facing the Panther itself.

cartier-la-panthere-eau-de-parfum

The fragrance is a magnificent Floral Oriental structure in which the gardenia flower loved in a modern bed of Muscs. This is what Mathilde Laurent, the in-house Perfumer says about the fragrance she created:

Every woman holds a share of felinity and any flower keeps animal notes in her heart“.

This new fragrance reveals a modern illustration of the Cartier woman. She is sexy, chic and has a strong personality. It is a subtle yet sophisticated fragrance with several contrasts that create an edge on this fragrance.

The fragrance is launched worldwide in all Cartier official point of sales. You can visit the official Cartier website to see more information about the product and the range.

Hermès Dressage L’Heure Masquée, singularity and innovation

1
Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hermès reveiled a new amazing timepiece in their theme Le Temps de l’Imaginaire.. It is called Dressage L’Heure Masquée, hidden hour in French. And again, it is purely poetry. Here time is translated into an imaginary and poetic approach. Almost philosophical. Hermes pushes the interaction between the watch and the owner of the watch. The person can play with his timepiece and create a special relationship. In 2011, Hermes won the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie Geneve with Le Temps Suspendu. The concept was that the watch owner could stop the time whenever he wanted. With this new launch, it is the opposite, the mirror complication. It is also the idea of “time on demand”.

hermes Heure masquee

Hermès already surprised us last year with the amazing Arceau, Le temps suspendu. This time, Hermes, as a magician of time, will help you picking up your chosen moments. How? By hidding from you the part of time that does not interest you. Basically the hours hand will be hidden beneath the minutes hand. You will choose to press on the crown button in order to reveal the exact time. It is as beautiful as complex to achieve. You will need a movement that will display a hidden time and still keep tracking the real time, so that when you press the crown, the mechanism will then liberate the hours hand to its real position. Sounds simple but it is a true watch-making masterpiece.

Caliber H1925
This is how Hermès explains the functionality from the mechanism point of view: “This playful stage-setting is orchestrated by the ingenious interaction of the rack, pinion and gear trains. When stimulated, the hour cam releases from its hiding place the hand that dutifully appears to perform its role of pointing to the correct hour on the dial. The dual-time indication is directly driven by the base movement and adjustable via the push button opposite the crown”.
Dressage L'heure Masquée detail

Hermes L'heure masquée zoom

The beauty of a Luxury house as Hermès is that they found their own positioning in a highly competitive watch industry. While several watch-makers sometimes forget that we do not only sell watches, we also sell dreams, Hermès is probably the most creative watch-maker in this field. The simplicity and the beauty of each timepiece equals the reputation of the Brand.
Hermes ad for Dressage

Hermes Dressage heure masquée picture
And the most impressive part is the way every single Hermes employee is capable to tell you the full story with passion and confidence. This reflects the fact that all the work related to watch-making is at the state of art.

Here is a video with Mr. Philippe Delhotal, Creative director of La Montre Hermes about the 2014 novelties.

This incredible complication took 3 years to be developed by Vaucher Manufacture, in which Hermès is shareholder. Pressing the crown frees the hour hand hidden under the hand of minutes. Thanks to an ingenious system of two coupled cams that can store the current time, it is then placed on the right index. GMT function, second time zone on a disc placed behind a cover which unveals when you press the crown (frees the time display on the 2 time) correction GMT by repeatedly pressing the button located on the left of the case. The movement is 32.5mm with 95 components. The case has one of the emblematic shapes of Hermès.

Only 2’000 pieces were produced in steel and 500 units in Rose Gold. When Hermès plays with time, you can do whatever you want with it, either stop it or hide it. That’s the beauty of it. Check the brand official website for more information about the new Baselworld models. https://www.hermes.com.

Kim DotCom, is he the millennium hero?

0
Reading Time: 9 minutes

Kim DotCom has called himself the internet resistance. He declared himself as the highest profile to be victim of the US restricted laws about internet. He is supposed to be the person who stands between people’s freedom and big brother. Is he a hero and should get a medal or is he just a guy who completely lost it?

Is revolution an old fashion model?

There are people we admire for what they do and others for who they are. Heroes are loved for both. The 20th century got an enormous list of people who were outstanding for more than what their own lives would represent. From Che Guevara to Gandhi, Nelson Mandela or even Zapata. They all were liberators of humanity. Interesting concept as today, freedom is always a matter of perspective. Especially when we talk about internet and technology in general. What is free does not necessary mean you can use it the way you want and even if it is legal.
In our modern countries, the concept of revolution became more or less an outdated idea. People’s life became pretty much straight forward and despite the fact certain things remain unsatisfactory, nobody would really start a revolution. There is of course a romantic side in the idea of building a revolution, being the new Che Guevara. More than one high-school student would get these ideas in mind. This would happen just before getting a diploma and trying to find a job. Probably getting a decent job, pay the bills and raise your kids might be a more important matter.
What all the above heroes have in common? Probably Nelson Mandela had the perfect answer for this.
I was not a messiah, but an ordinary man who had become a leader because of extraordinary circumstances.” So most of the time, no real hero were born a hero. Is their aim to overcome an exceptional situation that will transcend them. Of course this requires often the sacrifice of their lives to a cause, to a purpose.
Today there are not so many “causes” to fight for in our Developed countries. Probably most of the true battles were already won or lost in the past. Do not read me wrong, there will always be causes worth to fight for but who in our comfortable lives would sacrifice the small piece of happiness for a greater good? Not so many. There is also the idea that revolution is not applicable anymore as society became more complex. We tend to talk about evolution rather than revolution: In general the system is tight to each single level of the machine. So in general new ideas take place if people evolve. And internet does not help as the more our lives become digital, the more our habits, actions and gestures are recorded in a log somewhere. And the more people go online the more ethic questions are raised.

Internet, the place for modern revolution?

Internet is a typical human being activity. Despite the fact it is all managed by machines and cables, the way it is built and the way it evolves matches the way Men are. In the 19th century the news about an event or a fact would take around 50 years to go around the globe. And probably it would not reach everybody. When Genghis Khan died in 1227, it took several years to all the people in Mongolia and China to realize it. When Henry VIII died, it took almost a year to everyone in England to be fully aware of the news. And I do not dare to ask how long did it take to Christopher Columbus to inform all Europe that he has discovered a new land, just by going West. Dissemination of information was a mess. Today we have internet. Sometimes we get the news even before it becomes news. That’s the power of it. And we know that information is power. By connecting all the people together Men created a worldwide spider web. Sometimes you can feel being the spider but sometimes you might end up like the fly, caught in a sticky web and being monitored by a multiple eye beast. You need to be careful then to not being eaten.
So, because internet opened the access of information, it is harder for a country or an organization to take advantage of other people. Information flows and today anyone can be the source of consistent and reliable information.
It is an amazing power that many countries used. The Kosovo war started a new era for field journalism as people would report what was happening in the ground. Then we got the so called Arab Spring. The protests have shared some techniques of civil resistance in sustained campaigns involving strikes, demonstrations, marches, and rallies, as well as the effective use of social media to organize, communicate, and raise awareness in the face of state attempts at repression and Internet censorship. Twitter was heavily used and so Internet became the new Kalashnikov.

Internet and the idea of Free culture

With the rise of internet and since 2 computers started talking with each-other troubles started. Before the computer era, a piece of content would exist in a certain number of units, not less not more. The digitalization of content also brought a challenge towards the existance of the support and the copyrighting of the content. When you would buy a record in the 60’s, you would be able to listen to it and also to let your best friend to listen to it too as he would borrow you for a moment. At the end still only one record existed.
Today, with digitalization, one book, one music album or any film have a non defined number of copies. Can be 1, 10, 1 million. The more people download the content the more copies exist. And what happens when you wish to share that content with your best friend? You might end up sending “a copy” of it via email or via file share protocols. And here troubles start with the multiplication of copies. Same usage than in the 60’s but we tend to generate illegal copies of it. If this habit would remain at the friend local level, it would not be a problem. But with the World Wide Web, by the moment you create a new digital copy that you send to someone, the risk is that copy become millions. It is all exponential. Things like Peer2Peer protocols made the happiness of millions of people worldwide. From pictures, to movies, music, softwares and games, everything was available online and for free. Wikipedia, youtube, dailymotion, youku and broadcaster websites democratized the availability of content. In the middle of these amazing evolution, something was left aside: copyright.
While major companies like Microsoft, Adobe or Universal would complain about the lack of revenue, others started wondering how behaviors would evolve. One of the biggest phenomenon of all was Megaupload and Megavideo. Started by the Kim Dotcom in 2005 and shut down by the FBI in 2012. The principle was easy. Users would upload their files and allow other users to view them and enjoy the content. Very fast it became one of the biggest movie, software and music illegal use of all. It made the fortune of its owner. With some proof that Megaupload directors knew the illegal character of the users activities , the FBI shit down all Megaupload sites and places Kim Dotcom in jail. In 2013, Kim Dotcom relaunched a new hosting and stockage service called mega. It has over 7 million users distributed in 49 languages. The new key point is that all files are encrypted so even people at Mega do not know what the users have in their servers. This was a massive change as although illegal files could be present in Mega servers, the directors cannot be considered of illegal copyright acts as they do not know what the users would be doing. Kim Dotcom also had a project called Megabox that was never launched. Kim Dotcom claims the freedom of Internet away from all the NSA, FBI and other Big Brothers are watching you.
kim Dotcom case
The real question is how to define that freedom? Is total freedom means illegal too? By not knowing what are inside the servers, it means that Mega created a free zone in which everything is possible. Good and bad. Does this make internet a better place?
Today, people seek a better visibility and transparency on the entire system. Personal data is completely freaking people out and the more you try to understand, the less you get it.

Kim Dotcom, satan or saint?

Probably both. Some people would describe him as a megalo-dictator. Others see him as a digital hero. Can we describe him as a true revolutionary? Probably not as the dictionnary would define:
revolution
Mega is not a revolution as it does not mark a change, or an innovative way that discontinues the way we were doing things. And that’s probably what we are missing with Kim Dotcom. He is just a man trying to fight the system by resisting to it. Rather than resisting, he should actually change things. By being a game changer, he would make an entire establishment completely obsolete. This is what you are missing Mr Dotcom. What do you do today that is bringing a true change in how people communicate, exchange files and even consume music, films, softwares or even media.
Kim Dotcom
Generation Y is already in place and they can be a game changer. Just need someone to bring a true innovation. So Mr Dotcom, rather of being a few resisting and hiding from the big bad wolf, why not being legions and changing the way things work. Megabox was already a start. Otherwise you will end up as all the napsters, emules and other old fashion systems. It is up to you now.
Score?

São Paulo, creativity with a smile.

Reading Time: 8 minutes

Being a Carioca (a person from Rio de Janeiro) should oblige me NOT to talk about São Paulo like this. For many years and decades there were a friendly competition between Sâo Paulo and Rio.

While São Paulo is the economic capital of the country, Rio has the glamour. And the 2 cities always competed to get what the other had. We are never happy with what we have and we always think the grass is greener on the other side. Nevertheless, being a Brazilian who loves his country, I do need to override the kind of brother love-hate thing to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.

keep-calm-and-love-sampa

São Paulo is not only about the business and the money. It is also about creativity, arts and power. Being the biggest business center of the entire Latin American countries, São Paulo is considered to be the home of the country’s elite. The best musicians, the best fashion designers, the best managers and the most gorgeous models are in Sampa (friendly way to call the city). That’s why fashion week is in Sâo Paulo. Follow the Luxuryactivist Travel review here bellow.

Avenida Paulista, the heart of Sampa

avenida Paulista
Despite that it might be the place where you might eat the best pizza in the world (pizza night in Sâo Paulo is crazy), the city has great richness interms of architecture and art. Avenida Paulista is the main pulse of the city. All creative agencies are around the famous avenue and all along that street, several places should be highlighted.

Art is more than a fact, it is a lifestyle

The great thing with São Paulo is the fact that you can find an amazing art scene, from very institutional corporations to young artists and designers. One of these places is the MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo. Designed by Lina Bo Bardi, the amazing architecture of the building makes it quite unique and completely melted into the urban contemporary vision of such a metropole.

Permanent collections and ephemeral exhibitions rhythm the museum activities. Check the museum website for more information: http://www.masp.art.br

Another amazing place is the Ibirapuera Park. Designed by the Master himself in 1950, it is a very inspiring auditorium with an unique feeling.

And we could not talk about art in São Paulo without mentioning the famous Campana Brothers. Fernando and Humberto Campana astonished the world 15 years ago with their Arte Povere

Music at its best. Next generation of musicians

Ivete Sangalo
Ivete Sangalo

Brazil is the land of Samba and Bossa Nova. Great Brazilian names marked world music history. All great names with huge amount of talent that shaped the vision of Brazilian music until today. Some of the magic names are Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Joâo Gilberto and recently Carlinhos Brown, Seu Jorge, Ivete Sangalo or Lenine.

São Paulo has the greatest musicians who populates the avant-garde team of new talents. If you should follow one artist, you need to discover Rodrigo Del Arc. He is 28 years old, he is a pure São Paulo guy and he might be the next Moby or the new Carlinhos Brown. He already released his 2nd Album and his reputation is growing very fast.

Where to stay and what to do in Sâo Paulo?

São Paulo is a huge city and we have selected a short list of places to be during your next journey to “Sampa”.

Hotels in Sâo Paulo

In terms of Hotels, there are 2 addresses you need to have. The first one is the Fasano hotel. Located in Jardins, one of the best areas in São Paulo, you will recognize the typical red brick façade. The inside of the hotel is very elegant and cosy. Wooden floors and leather armchairs will welcome in a very stylish way.

The concierge is exceptional. You can ask him basically everything. They have a very interesting bar where jazz concerts are played, the perfect place to chill-out at the end of the day.

The second hotel is the Hotel Unique. As its name explains, it is a one of a kind hotel. The building itself has a moon crescent shape that spot it out completely from the urban landscape. Some people also associate its original shape with a ship. The outside might look like a secret location for a adventure movie but you will seduced by the inside.

The huge lobby will immediately take your breath away and when you will see the roof swimming pool and bar, you will say to yourself that you are at the right spot. You will also appreciate the nice panoramic view over São Paulo.

Restaurants in São Paulo

In terms of restaurants, the choice in São Paulo is huge. And when I say huge, we are talking about thousands of restaurants. Every corner of the city has a restaurant. Of course some of them are more interesting than others.
Our first choice is the Mani. Also in Jardim Paulistano, this charming restaurant serves what we could call a neo-Brazilian food. Beef is prepared traditionally but aligned with an amazing lapsang souchong crust.

Mani-Restaurante-Sao-Paulo

Several traditional dishes reviewed in a more contemporary way. White washed walls and straw roof will make you feel nostalgic in the middle of the modern city. It is a complete heaven.

You could not leave town without going to a Churrascaria, these amazing meat restaurants where once you taste the meat, it is going to be hard to find something equal in another country. Several chains like Porcâo or Fogo de Châo exist. Our recommendation though would be the one called Rodeio. This one is an institution in Sâo Paulo. The restaurant kept its interior design now 60 years old. There are space for 260 seats so you will meet all São Paulo there.

Restaurante-Rodeio-Sao-Paulo

During the week is more a business lunch and dinner ambiance while on weekends the atmosphere is more friends and family oriented. If you wish to try at least one piece of meat (even if you are vegetarian), try the Picanha. By far the most tasteful one. They also have a Rodeio rice that would make you love rice if it is not the case.

Shopping in São Paulo

São Paulo offers several possibilities for shopping. Brazilians love to go to the Mall. A concept imported from the US. They are mega-structures with large park spaces, restaurants, cinemas and great number of shops. They have air-conditioning and Brazilians could spend the entire day there. In São Paulo the most famous one is JK Iguatemi. The temple of luxury shopping in Sampa.

You can find more than 230 shops which sell all international brands from Armani to Zegna. It also has interesting boom shops like Livraria da Vila designed by Isay Weinfeld.

You cannot visit Brazil without purchasing at least one pair of famous Havaianas, the Brazilian flip-flops. So you have one reference destination: the official Havaianas shop. It is a success story as it all started in the 60’s. Supposed to be a cheap yet reliable shoes adapted to Brazil climate, today it became a fashion icon.

Every year Havaianas sell more than 150 million pairs. You will find all colours, shapes and trends. There is always a pair of Havaianas you should have. The store itself has a fancy design.

If you are interested in Antiques, you will be delighted with the Feira de Antiguidades. It happens every weekend a little bit all over the city. But the best dealers are around Praça Benedito Calixto and by the MASP, especially on Sundays.

As you can see, you definitely need to find some time to discover São Paulo. Either during a business trip or purely for leisure, it is a great city to spend a couple of days. And if you hesitate to accept a job there, well now you have your good reasons to say yes.

Why Switzerland is afraid of Apple?

0
Reading Time: 8 minutes

What if every watch user would change its Baume et Mercier, its Tissot, Swatch, Breitling for a iWatch? Sounds crazy right? But think how good your mom is with her iPad, or how great grandaddy is with the GPS and even how your young brother does not bother anymore having a watch as he can see the time on his iPod touch? Scary.

Well the future is already here and the only thing that the connected watches market is waiting for is a true watch and not a geeky plastic gadget with a usb on it. And apparently Apple is willing to supply it. By willing to have a Swiss Made electronic watch, Apple points the arrow of success directly straight to the heart of Switzerland chasse-gardée. If the Californian company would have search for a taiwan-made watch, probably it would be just another gadget. By positioning the iWatch intention in a Swiss-made base, this reminds alot the revolution made by Swatch in 1983 with its Quartz Swiss-made watches.

Switzerland and Watch-making. Pure Swiss ingenuity

Swiss Watch-making does not really has a starting date. We know that several farmers during winter times would dedicate their free time on the building of clocks and time measurement mechanisms. Swiss ingenuity is part of the spirit of the country. But it is true that the 16th century market a bigger milestone. In 1541, Jean Calvin brought the reforms and the wear of jewels were forbidden. So several goldsmith in Geneva needed to find a different solution to keep running their business and watch-making was the solution. It became then a true activity.

History of Watch-making
In the 17th century, Geneva was over-crowded with Watchmakers and some of them decided to move to another place and elected the nice region of Jura mountains. Like Daniel Jeanrichard who was the first to intruduce a labour division in watch-making. By that time Switzerland was already exporting more than 60’000 watches every year.
Swiss historyswiss watchmaking
Until the 19th century hundreds of inventions and patents were discovered. It was a rich time in terms of creativity. And then the industrial revolution arrived. And we cannot really say that Switzerland was ready for it. So by the end of the 19th century, Switzerland was one of the poorest country in Europe, which might sound incredible to believe. But it was true and that was the time in which several Swiss people decided to move abroad looking for a better future. Nobody would blame them. For those who decided to stay, they started better organizing themselves. The use of watches started being more and more popular. All the different watch-makers started to define the different industrial processes and a horizontal organization among hundreds of tiny artisans companies was put in place. Everybody would work together in a wise understanding and even solidarity. Watchmakers like Frédéric Ingold and Georges Léchot marked their time with gold letters as being the leaders of a new era.

The Quartz watch almost killed an entire industry.

Until the 70’s, the Swiss watchmaking industry was pretty much up and running. In such a small country you could consider around 90’000 people working for the watch industry by the end of the 70’s out of only 6.1 million inhabitants.
The 70’s brought a tremendous revolution that almost killed the Swiss horlogers. It was the ascension of the Quartz watch. In deed with the economic first crisis period since Second world war and the new exciting Quartz innovation, the Swiss traditional watch-makers felt from their gold chair.
The Quartz technology also brought more competition from the USA and Asia. The Swiss industry would be seen as an old dying elephant. Several companies would shut down their businesses and the number of the industry employees went down from 90’000 to 30’000 in 1984. And since then this figure remained pretty much stable as in 2004 we would count 40’000 people.
And then Nicolas Hayek and Swatch arrived. And with the launch of the first Swatch watch in 1983 saved an entire industry from bankruptcy.
Nicolas Hayek Swatch
Of course today the watch-making industry is healthy but we realize that by having missed the electronic revolution and being in the middle of economic 1970’s crisis, it almost stop the machine. Does this ring you a bell? Of course it does.
Today we are probably reaching the same horizon: new electronic breakthrough and economic crisis. Definitely all Swiss watch-makers are scared because they did not invested in electronic watches, at least the way they tend to be today. Innovation lays on Apple, Samsung, LG, Huawei ‘s table. And these companies do not work (yet) with Swiss companies.

The Apple iWatch, Damocles sword?

Smartphones were probably one of the biggest inventions of the century. It changed completely the way people would communicate in all developed countries. The idea of internet everywhere and especially “being connected” everywhere is modifying even how people behave.
The electronic or connected watch concept is not new. You can read the full story of it by clicking here.
Recently Samsung made a big move by launching the Galaxy gear watch. Enjoying the popularity of the Galaxy range (smartphone and tablet) among a young audience they tried to recruit on the watch side.
Samsung Galaxy gear
Motorola just revealed its Moto 360 which looks more qualitative than most of the electronic watches. It is also the case of the Androidgear. But all of these are made in Asia. By being made in Asia, it remains at the level of gadget. It would compete with Casio and other IceWatches.
Moto 360
Androidgear
Those who seek the quality, the reliability and the accuracy of a Swiss made watch would not replace their Swiss watch for an Asian gadget.
Somehow, the true revolution could and will come from Apple. By searching the best partner in Switzerland to build the iWatch, Apple understood the entry door for a longlasting business. The entire reputation of the company in terms of technology and “coooooliness” could be the game changer that Swiss watchmakers fear. When we see how deeply Apple changed the music, phone and computer industry for good, if they have the right product, then we will start a new era in watch making.

Technology gap only happens at the right moment

Why Apple’s project seems so obvious for today’s reality? There are different points that make a certain conversion into the relevancy of an iWatch. First of all, the internet of things is a reality.
Internet of things
More and more objects of our daily lives are connected to the internet. Our phones, cars, fridges, teddy bears, televisions and even our fire alarms. The inter-connectivity is something that we got use to. With your phone you can trigger your car, your tablet commands your smartTV. Our phones by becoming Smart, allows us to connect to internet everywhere and above all to be reachable anytime and by several channels. Social media and email is just something you use even before getting up from bed. Young generations are less educated and less attached to traditional watch makers. They have any way already merged their ipod, paper calendar and diary into a smartphone. Because the phone gives you also the time, the next step would be the watch. So yes the developed world is ready for the iWatch now.

What is happening in Switzerland now?

What we know is that Jean Claude Biever has tried very hard to get the Apple business. Hublot factory in Nyon, Switzerland, is doubling its surface and many people say that it is to host the Apple business partnership.
20140319-215453.jpg
Hublot was firstly approached because of the Sapphire glass, now are we talking about watch cases or even a complete solution? Hublot being one of the most innovative and dynamic watch-makers in Switzerland, a possible collaboration could be relevant. We also know that several Swiss specialists got interesting job offers to work for Apple. Somehow the buzz is getting so intense that probably the iWatch can be launched without any media plan.
The Swatch group was also consulted. Of course there is a success story in the heritage of Swatch that could fit the project but perhaps Apple has greater ambitions? The iWatch from Apple is completely overwhelming the media. Other companies launches seem in comparison useless.
What is going to happen with the Swiss watch industry? We know that all Brands positioned between 300 to 3000 dollars will suffer strongly from the iWatch.
20140319-220406.jpg
And depending how far Apple will go, and also depending on social evolution of the watch customers, high level brands might be reached too. The most interesting part of the story is still to go. So watch out!
