Cully Jazz Festival – the biggest small festivals of all

0
Reading Time: 3 minutes

In a little more than a month, Leman lake in Switzerland will vibrate in a different way thanks to the new edition of Cully Jazz Festival.

Cully Jazz

This year the program is again as special as “connoisseur“.

Little flashback

It was in 1983 that Daniel Thentz and Émmanuel Gétaz had the idea to create this festival. And this dynamic duo had everything to succeed. Daniel Thentz, who passed away in 2011, was a guy from Cully with a huge passion and even bigger talent for Jazz. He was definitely one of the key musicians, trompetist, and composer in Switzerland. Émmanuel Gétaz learned everything from master Claude Nobs for more than 10 years. That’s why Cully Jazz festival became one of the important references in the world of music festivals.
Until 1995, all concerts took place at Salle Davel in Cully but a fire ruined the place and then the festival organizators decided to build a huge “chapiteau” by the Leman lake.

Cully Jazz festival Room

Cully Jazz visitors
The spirit of the festival was set. Since the beginning, inhabitants of Cully opened their basements to welcome concerts and visitors. This supported the existence of the “Festival Off” in which amateur an young artists can play under the official program.

Cully Switzerland
Cully is a small village by the Lake between Lausanne and Montreux. Usually they have 1766 inhabitants and each year the festival gathers more than 50’000 visitors.
Despite the fact it is a Jazz festival, Cully Jazz also welcome different artists from other horizons. One year, they even welcomed Prince (Love Symbol) in a private concert held in one of the Cully basements!
The festival pays itself by 85% thanks to the tickets sale, the drinks and the food.

2014 will be a cool year for Cully

This year, the festival program is very savvy. A perfect blend between confirmed artists and young talents. Some great names will be present this year, which will spice up the experience for the visitors. It will be the 32nd edition of the festival from April 4th to April 12th 2014.

Cully Jazz 2014
On the Jazz side we would need to highlight the following:
Randy Weston
Avishai Cohen
Ceramic Dog with Marc Ribot
Robert Glasper

And when you open your arms and your heart beyond the Jazz horizon, there are also amazing artists like:
Ayo
Emilie Loizeau
Valerie June
Thomas Dutronc
Salif Keita
Bassékou Kouyaté

If you wish to check the complete program, visit the Festival official website: http://www.cullyjazz.ch

Electronic watches, not that new

1
Reading Time: 5 minutes

Since the launch of the smartphone, we knew that one day we would end up with “smart-watches”. Not that we were all nostalgics of Michael Knight and his Knight industries 2000 wrist-watch but because it would be the natural evolution of things. Despite the fact that iWatches are a hot trend right now, their concept is not new.

The Electronic watch, a concept older than 50 years

Everybody is talking about the Apple iWatch (even if nobody knows exactly when this will be launched) and the Samsung Galaxy Gear (already launched). But did you know that the idea of a watch capable of doing certain electronic functionalities and powered with a battery is pretty much old?
The pioneer was not a Japanese company. It was Hamilton that in 1957 launched the Hamilton Electric watch 500. The uniqueness of this wrist-watch was that a small electric battery replaced the mainspring. The advertising, as you can see below, shows the watch and the size of the miniaturized battery. It was as small as a shirt button.

Hamilton Electric 500
This was the first step. It was the first watch that never required winding. And this was a technical revolution. The idea of this watch came in 1946, several scientific work around electricity and power battery miniaturization was taking place, so Hamilton definitely took advantage of that to inspire the creation of a revolutionary watch. 11 years later and several trials, the company successfully presented a true elegant watch with an electric heart.
In parallel, the first quartz clock was built in 1927 by Warren Marrison and J.W. Horton at Bell Telephone Laboratories. Of course it did not have the size of a wrist-watch, but the understanding of Quartz crystal and its capability of frequency accuracy opened a new door for measuring time.
1967 is a very important year. In Switzerland, there is a presentation of the first analog Quartz wrist-watch by the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH) in Neuchâtel. It is called the Beta 1. At the same time Seiko Japan reveals its first Quartz wrist-watch called Astron.

Seiko Astron
Seiko has been working on the Astron project since 1957 and in 1969 they launched the very first commercial Quartz wrist-watch.
After this epic episode, we would need to wait more than 10 years until electronic components could be industrially miniaturized and give more possibilities to the electronic watch business. Of course it was only the beginning but a very important one. Without electric source or energy, how could we power a digital screen today right?

And LED screens came to radically change the face of watches

One of the big changes with the arrival of digital in watch-making was the LED display. A 7 line liquid crystal display that would replace the current dial of a watch. This opened the possibilities. Certain current complications would not be a problem any more.

Hamilton, a true visionary

In 1970, the first ever digital watch with a LED screen was commercially produced. Once again Hamilton Watch company got the lead by launching a watch called Pulsar. And this was a real blast in the quiet watch-making industry. Here are some Press articles about it.

Hamilton Pulsar

Hamilton Pulsar Watch
The idea of a watch with no “hands” and no mechanical components were definitely Science fiction for that time.

Hamilton Pulsar
In 1968, the movie 2001 Space Odyssey had shown a Hamilton prototype Digital watch on screen. Since then, Hamilton wanted to bring fiction to reality. And it is exactly what they did.

Hamilton 2001 Space Odyssey

And suddenly came Asia and they were here to stay!

Nothing could predict that in 1946 when Kashio Keisanki founded Kashio Seisakujo that this company would become the biggest electronic business from 1970 to 1990. And if you did not notice yet, we are here talking about Casio Computer and Electronics.
The 60’s and the 70’s were true challenges for Casio. Despite the intense internationalization of the company, economic crisis was hard as well as competition. So to get the company out of that, Casio top management decided to use their know-how in pocket computers and calculators into watch-making. That’s why in 1974, Casio presented the very first digital watch called the Casiotron.

Casiotron

Casio Casiotron
The specificity of this watch, despite the hours, minutes, seconds display was the presence of an electronic perpetual calendar. The watch would display the day, month and year as well as he bissextile years.
Since this launch, Casio multiplied the versions and variants. Each watch had more or less functions, all for a very affordable price. Probably the most popular one was the watch-calculator.

Casio Calculator Watch

Casio Calculator
In the 80’s another Asian giant, Seiko, invested a lot of resources on PC-connected digital watches. Some of them had little display functions and others even integrated Pagers.

The Smart-watch finally arrived

End of the 90’s IBM and Citizen, joined forces and launched the first watch with what we could consider a mobile OS. In deed, this watch held a linux system although screen possibilities were limited.

Linux watch
It was also the rise of a Korean giant, Samsung. With the know-how in Smartphones getting to an edge, they launched in 2009, the first Samsung smart-watch-phone called
the Samsung S9110.

Samsung S9110
2012 was the launch of several Fitness watches like the Nike watch. Measuring the body metrics became something that made sense for several digital watch constructors.
It was also the launch of the Peeble watch. Smart-watches become fashionable and clever.

Nike watch
Nevertheless the small amount of sales shows that the audience for such products is still small. In 2013, Samsung launched the Galaxy Gear watch. You can receive calls, check your emails and everything can be manageable via a watch app.

Samsung Galaxy Gear
Now we are waiting for Apple to launch its iWatch. Rumors say that is going to be launched by the end of this year but nothing was promised yet. The Smart-watches became part of people’s life already and probably the best is still to come.

Fragrance review: 2014 Top 5 new launches

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Every new year comes with many new things. And of course the Fragrance industry also provides its contribution. Here is our Fragrance review on the most interesting New launches you definitely do not want to miss!

Hermes Bel Ami Vetiver

Bel Ami Vetiver Hermes

This new fragrance belongs to the “Classics” collection and it is a reinterpretation of the original Bel Ami fragrance launched in …
The originality of this new creation is not really on the smoky-woody part, for us is definitely in the top notes. A perfect alliance between the sparkling of Citrus notes and the sharpness of spices. Jean-Claude Ellena presents a very elegant signature for this fragrance. Aligned with the extraordinary quality of Vetiver in the heart of the fragrance, there is a strong yet subtle leather note that wraps the olfactive structure in a glove of timeless refinement. The Bel Ami flacon gets a new label, this time in a beautiful mahogany color. Another interesting fact is the Hermes logo embossed on the label paper. Super elegant.

Rose de Chloé

Rose de Chloé
Sometimes you do not need to invent the wheel to propose an amazing fragrance. And this is the case of Roses de Chloé. By rediscovering one of the most emblematic perfumery themes, Chloé presents a beautiful Damascena Rose dressed up for sophistication and modernity. The Rose theme is one of the most difficult theme in perfumery as it was used and re-used thousand of times. Here, a very beautiful Rose plays with the richness of Magnolia flower and the clean-cut of White-musks and dry ambery-woody notes. A very parisian elegance with a Cosmopolitan twist.

Patou pour Homme

Patou pour Homme
This new fragrance by the legendary French House deserves to be highlighted for two magnificent reasons. First because it is Jean Patou. When Patou launches a new fragrance, all fans get highly enthousiastic. It is an event. The news of a new creation is a promise for unexpected delights. And this is the second reason for which Patou pour homme deserves this highlight. The first minutes of this fragrance reveal an amazing Green Galbanum note. Being one of the hardest ingredients to work with, Galbanum requires bravery and true knowledge of the perfumery creation. When a master perfumer dares to explore this kind of note, there is no middle of the road. Either is bad or it is truly great. And here, Jean Patou successfully delivered the dream.

Balmain Extatic

Extatic Balmain
Balmain got in the past years a true creative revival in terms of fashion. We were wondering when it would come to Fragrances. And here is the answer: Extatic. Between Glamour-Rock and timeless elegance, the new feminine fragrance by Balmain captures the edge of the Fashion House. The first notes are surprisingly water-mouthering. A modern juicy Rose splashed with a Nachi accord set the stage. Modern textured woods with a hint of leather signs the fragrance with depth and richness.

Laine de Verre

Laine de Verre Serge Lutens

New opus in the series Eaux de Serge lutens, Laine de Verre plays with extremes. If you would have thought about the most extreme combination of notes, you would probably pick up this one. Laine de Verre is a contrasted fragrance. The Metallic combination of Aldehydes and Citrus notes clashes into the soft aura of white Musks and soft woods. It is minimalistic in the approach but you will get a true olfactive explosion of senses. Serge Lutens is a creator as no one and he proves it once again.

This new year starts in a very interesting way and it is just the beginning.

The danger of Sponsored Tweets – Dior Fail

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Discover how Dior might not have things right with their Tweet sponsored campaign. It happens.

Twitter tweets for money, the sponsored tweet tool

Twitter was a true revolution in the way people and brands interact together. Here are the latest Twitter stats – source: Twitter Report 09.13.2013

  • Twitter is 7 years old
  • 1 Billion users
  • 231.7 million active users (23%)
  • 36 million unique visitors per month
  • China is the country with the biggest number of twitter users: 35.5 million
  • 300 billion tweets sent since the launch.
  • 500 million tweets per day
  • 75% of all tweets happened outside USA
  • 77% of Twitter users are on mobile
  • Average Followers per Twitter user: 208
  • 36% monthly increase of Twitter app downloads since the launch.

So you can imagine that Brands just jumped into the Twitter world as the engagement with customers are huge.
Micro-blogging was definitely a true innovation while Facebook and other mass networks just made the evolution of websites (which is already not bad).
And every global Social network needs at one point to “monetize” their platform. Let’s not forget that social media is not ruled by NGOs trying to make the world a better place! It is all about business despite of the cool californian attitude. So Twitter definitely want to make money. Social Media, as well as Internet today, run a delicate game about the idea of visibility. Nobody can be naive. If you do not pay you wont get visibility and visibility is key.
So, as a Brand you do not have the choice. The trend is set: organic reach shall disappear one day. At least for companies.
Google has SEM, Search Engine Marketing (Adwords) and Social Media has SMM: Social Media Marketing. Facebook has Promoted Posts, Twitter has Promoted tweets and Pinterest has Promoted Pins. For the poor and naive user, it is all called “Sponsored”. This means that the user never asked for it but the social media platform sold your data to a company that is now delivering an advertising to your personal newsfeed. Of course you are supposed to be happy as these ads, if the Media person of the company did well his job, are supposed to be highly targeted.
Unfortunately there are 2 current situations about the sponsored content: either you did not targeted your audience or your targeted audience did not ask for it anyway and get mad about it. This is what happened yesterday with Dior on Twitter. . Check it out.

Dior Sponsored tweets, what went wrong

Sometimes, either you are a community manager or a media buyer, you never know how people can react on your advertising campaign. Of course there are messages more intrusive than others. In this case, Dior used a very neutral message and even though the luxury french company got a war on the tweet feed. Has we say Sh** happens.
This is the initial tweet you could see in your newsfeed if you would match Dior target.
Dior Twitter fail tweet sponsorisé
So as you can see, this message could not be more informative and low profile.
But of course if you would be annoyed by such message, some people could be a little nasty. And this is what happened:
Dior-Twitter-Sponsored-tweet-4

And the story goes on and on and at this point, as a Brand, you can just sit, lay-back and watch the horror movie as a simply viewer of your own misery. You try to understand why this person is being so rude. Is it an unsatisfied customer? Or A missed target? Sometimes people are doing this just for provocation or to rise their Klout score (my first 2.0 joke).
So things get dirty:
Dior-Twitter-Sponsored-tweet-3

What can Dior do? Nothing. What can I say? Not much a part the fact that Dior was one of the pioneers in the 2.0 marketing and despite of the current situation their digital strategy, running now for more than 10 years, was mostly consider as best practice in the luxury industry. So yes, sometimes things goes wrong because Social Media is about real people and real relationships. Not about marketing personas. Social platforms should not forget this tiny difference.
Nevertheless you can join @Dior on Twitter. This is a non-sponsored advice 🙂

Cartier and the Art of über-Perfection

0
Reading Time: 4 minutes

Last month, LuxuryActivist was at SIHH in Geneva. It is the international Haute-Horlogerie show for professionals. It is organized by The Richemont Group. All Brands from Roger Dubuis, Montblanc, Baume & Mercier, Jaeger Le-Coultre or Cartier were of course present. They all revealed amazing creations and some of them will probably be the highlights of this year. We were quite impressed by Cartier’s philosophy of bringing small details into superlatives. It means, that every single detail was taken care of in the most truly and prestigious way. The luxury Watchmaking industry concentrates the most amazing companies in the world. Precision is not only a matter of “giving the time”. It is also a matter of purpose, of bringing an idea to the perfect execution. And Cartier is definitely one of this companies in which details go beyond perfection.

The Watchmaking industry, innovation since the babylonians

Horology comes from the greek horologium, which means the study of time. Since the babylonians, we observed the stars and the planets and we observed time passing by. 4000 years ago, men divided time in 12 equal periods and since them the bases of watchmaking were founded.
Despite the fact most of big innovations were invented more than 100 years ago, Swiss Watch-makers never sleep. From new ways of interpretation of existing innovations like the Tourbillon, the Art craftmanship or new mouvements, every year we discover new wonders.

Cartier, Watch-makers since 1847

Cartier is a company one-of-a-kind. Since it’s creation by Louis-François Cartier, all principles of the brand were settled. And when in 1904, Mr. Cartier’s friend, the aviator Santos Dumont, complained to his friend that pocket watches were not practical while flying… Well the wrist-watch was invented.

20140127-072817.jpg
And that was just the beginning as Cartier settled a consistent Watch making business made of innovation, quality and elegance.

Cartier path into innovation and luxury

Ever since Cartier started its Watch business, the path of innovation was written in the Brand DNA. But more than innovation, we should describe it as the path towards perfection. In every single detail of a Cartier watch you can see and feel the amount of hours spent to make the sublime and the astonishment.
Here below are the different collections of the Brand.

Masculine collections

cartier-ballon-bleu

  • Ballon Bleu de Cartier
  • Tank
  • Calibre de Cartier
  • Santos
  • Rotonde
  • Ronde Louis Cartier
  • Ronde Solo de Cartier

Feminine collections

tank-francaise

  • Tank
  • Ballon Bleu de Cartier
  • Baignoire
  • Pasha de Cartier
  • Santos de Cartier
  • Crash
  • Montres Joiallières créatives

Here are some key dates in terms of innovation (list non-exhaustive).

  • 1905: the first ever Wrist-Watch
  • 1909: invention of the deployment clasp for Wrist-watches.
  • 1921: launch of the Tank watch, with its very original shape inspired by the real Allies tanks of WWI.
  • 1926: the “Baguette” watch
  • 1931: The Mystery pocket watch
  • 1932: the Tank Basculante watch
  • 1936: the Tank Asymetric watch
  • 1967: creation of new watches including the Crashwatch
  • 1985: creation of the Pasha watch
  • 1989: First exhibition “L’Art de Cartier” in Paris.
  • 1995: Creation of the Cartier Pasha C
  • 1996: Cartier Tank Française
  • 2002: Cartier Roadster is launched< \li>
  • 2004: Cartier launched the Santos 100
  • 2007: creation of Cartier’s Manufacture
  • 2008: the first Geneva Seal watch
  • 2010: launch of the ID One

2014, Cartier is still leading innovation.

When we met Cartier during the 2014 SIHH, we could see and feel that innovation is still one of the main motivation of the house and it keeps their flame of creativity burning after all these years. With 29 own mouvements, some of them with amazing complications and unique customization, Cartier is today a leader in the Watch-making industry.

Something in which they are very strong is the preservation of hand-craftmanship. In deed several hand-made activities surround Cartier’s Timepieces. From manual engraving, enflammage, Wood and Floral Marqueterie and Precious stones sertissage, Cartier is at the state of the Art. Here is one of their videos about these hand-made activities.

Cartier is for sure symbol of luxury and exclusivity. Once you live the experience of buying a Cartier Timepiece, you will never forget it.

Morning beauty, the new trend.

Reading Time: 5 minutes

After all the sexiness you could see from magazines, Social networks, models, actresses, singers or celebrities, now the tone is to a more authentic vision of things. And I am not talking about the “nude” trend. The nude look is everything but really nude. Now we see the idea of “morning beauty” to become the trend for 2014. It is as basic as it sounds. The idea is to present shots of oneself at the wake-up moment in the morning. No make-up (i mean really no make-up), no hair dressed, the real thing. This trend is in a way to give a certain clarity away from digital manipulation and other photoshops techniques. An idea of your true oneself. It allows a certain connection with a true vision of femininity.

Origins of the trend

After all the tremendous excess of the 80’s, the 90’s and the millenium brought a stronger connection to the innerself. It was a real Back to basics, not only from a spiritual perspective but also from a lifestyle and social point of view. We went from individualism  towards the community. From expansion to deepness and from artificial to real. It was a way to reconnect to Nature, Mother Nature or your True Nature. The idea of essentiality becomes almost a sort of obsession like if you could not miss it. If you miss the essence of things you might miss the essence of life. So in all domains like Fashion, art, music, architecture or Beauty, we could see the impact of this new era. More transparent, more minimalistic.

Fashion was minimal

In fashion it was the arrival and the discovery of the Japanese designers. While the fashion landscape was dominated historically by French, British and American designers, Asia brought the Asian touch. They were different, completely aligned with this new era and they mastered their design as no one. Fashion went from opulence to minimalism. It was the era of the “Less is more”.

  • Issey Miyake
  • Yohji Yamamoto
  • Kawakubo Rei
  • Kenzo

Fragrances got closer to Nature or a certain idea of it

In Fragrances and Beauty, there were of course strong consequences and new inspirations.  In Fragrances, the opulence of Obsession, Kouros, Opium was left behind for the cleanliness of CK One and Eau d’Issey. There was all the revival trend of Eau de Cologne which made the success of brands like Acqua di Parma and Roger & Gallet.

In Beauty and Cosmetics, the time was for Detox! Brands like Clinique became a huge hit as they presented themselves as the “real thing”. It was the start of skin diagnostics. People wanted to have a healthy mind in a healthy body: “Mens sana in corpore sano” It followed with the trend of Pharmacy brands, Doctor’s brands and para-pharmacy.

West discovered also the well-being inspired from the East: Ayurveda, Thai massage and Tea. We all realized how important was to pay attention to what we do, what we eat and what we believe on. Buddhism became a strong force and the Dalai Lama turned into a super star, performing all over the world in stadiums and show houses.

In Design and Architecture, the world discovered the Japanese and the Swiss designers like Jacques Herzog or SANAA founded by  Kazuyo Sejima et Ryue Nishizawa.

In Music, the broad public got interested into relaxing music, ambient music or even what was later called Lounge music.

“Morning Beauty” and the true face of Femininity

Hype magazine C-Heads published an article called Models in the Morning: A talk with Basement Fox (nsfw). It was a very inspiring article in which photographer Asher Moss a.k.a. Basement Fox caught on picture very natural and intimate morning moments of different women.

This all idea of capture those magic moments in which true femininity is revealed, is an interesting anti-trend of all extravagance that we can see nowadays . Which we could also call the MTV culture. It is definitely more artistic and only good true photographers can dare to try. The interesting idea is also that 2013 was the “Selfie” year. Thanks to social networks development as Facebook and specially Instagram, people started publishing self-portraits in all styles and moments of the day. Celebrities used this powerful mean of reaching their fans to present themselves in a more closer way. They started sharing the “back-stages” of their lives, their personal moments and little by little the hashtags like #Selfie #NoMakeUp started populating the web. Again, it is a way for celebrities to show, literally, their true faces and prove that they are not just a red lipstick and a fake wig. Not sure that all results are great but at least they are true 🙂 Here some examples of most popular Selfies with no Make-up recently published.

It is very Interesting how mass-media also allows to bring a certain connection to people in a more intimate way. This display of true femininity evokes a complete change of attitude towards the Photoshop era that transformed women in photography but recently also in video. So at the end we loose completely the image of a true woman. With this new trend pushing the aim for more authenticity, certain magazines are studying the possibility to not use photoshop on their pictures and just publish them as they are. The Lingerie brand American Eagle decided to publish a series of campaigns with models without photoshop. The result is amazing. Of course they picked up beautiful models but you can see there are little natural details that you would never see in a photoshop campaign.

So be true to your real-self.

Highlights of the Ermenegildo Zegna Couture line include the double-strap monk shoes with wing tip in a lush cocoa brown French calfskin crafted with the trademarked Goodyear Flex Construction. This labor- intensive technique for which a hand-applied cork insole adapts to the foot, grants unmatched comfort, freedom, breathability, lightness and thermal insulation.  The double-strap monk shoe is definitely one of the new items that you need for any dressed occasion.

Z-Zegna – Contemporary twist into your daily Business life.

Z-Zegna-Pentagon-story

An interesting geometrical work around the idea of Pentagon. A five sided shape, as the perfect match to men’s elegance. The geometric work black on black gives a contemporary feeling to a timeless elegance. Men eager to inject a contemporary twist into their business attire can indulge with the ZZegna line-up, characterized by a pentagon-shaped motif. In the case of the loafer, the geometric shape is injected into the leather sole while on the tote and tablet case, it is embossed on the supple lambskin.

Zegna Sport – It’s a Biker’s world

The Zegna Sport assortment winks at the biker world.
