Tom Sargent, Art and Antiques Insurance has no secret for him.

Luxury Activist got the opportunity to exclusively  interview Tom Sargent, Art and Antiques auction expert. Tom Sargent works as Client Manager of Artscope at Aon Private Clients, he specialises in high net worth items in auction, antiques and art. Previously worked in the auction industry for 6 years at Bonhams & Butterfields and Christies auctioneers where he valued antique furniture and Works of Art. Here he gained useful knowledge on how the art and high net worth industries operate working with dealers and collectors as well as sellers.

Here is the interview:

LuxuryActivist (LA): The Art Market evolved a lot in the past years. Can you describe the major changes in Art Insurance you have observed in the past 10 years?
Tom Sargent (TS): I’ve worked in the art industry for over 10 years and of that 6 years in insurance. In that time we have seen the top end art dramatically increase in value but as opposed to other fluctuations in the market this is substantially due to purchases being investment driven. A way of deducing this is the fact that a large amount of art is being put into storage rather than being displayed for enjoyment. Some of the major depositories are ‘free ports’ (an area with relaxed administration within a country) where they have very high security levels. Due to the accumulation of art this has pushed insurance premiums up in respect of these locations.
Conversely as a whole art insurance premiums have become more competitive as art is seen as a desirable risk to insure. As opposed to other assets, clients tend to take extreme care over their art because they are aware of its fragile nature and they often have an emotional connection with the item.
We have also seen growth in areas previously seen as niche, such as collectibles e.g. vintage cameras, ethnic art and occasionally installation art.

LA: Do you have experience in the Asian art market and if so are there any notable differences between insurance for Asian art and European.
TS: The art market is now truly global and some would argue that geographically it can make little difference where art is sold due to the increased exposure art sales receive. As has been shown in the media Chinese buyers have increasingly active in the market. They initially started purchasing purely Chinese art but they are showing signs of looking at other markets as Chinese prices have levelled. Insurance wise this has impacted European dealers and auctioneers as they need to have worldwide transit cover and possibly higher levels of Professional Indemnity to protect themselves against mis-attribution or mis-description.

Tom-Sargent

LA: If an investment is made, what would be a good tip when securing insurance for art?
TS: A professional valuation can be very important as insurers need to know the possible settlement value but also the authenticity. A figure must be established in order to calculate what will possibly be paid out and avoids any confusion. The appropriate level of security proportionate to the value of the art should also be installed and any additional hazards should be considered. This can include preventing water damage by elevating stored art above floor level, removing art when property work is carried out etc.

LA: Antique Furniture has a more lower buzz profile than Art. Do you see similar trends in the insurance industry?
TS: Antique furniture can have the lowest insurance premiums due to it being harder to damage, to steal and has generally been seen as less desirable. The top end still appears to be performing well however. The trend appears to be less furniture dealers using shop locations and more attending fairs. Insurance cover for fairs is treated as a separate category under a policy therefore is charged at different rates. Private collection wise some collectors include their antique furniture with their contents.

LA: How do you see the future in the insurance market of Antiques furniture and Art?
TS: We expect to see more young buyers realizing that they may need to take out specific fine art policies as their standard household policies have insufficient cover. Art will probably continue to accumulate in storage and we could see more commercial clients looking at Cyber Liability as the risk of internet exposure is highlighted. Councils and other institutions that are realizing they have valuable collections will look to take out more comprehensive cover as they become more accountable.

Tom-Sargent-Photo

With the world globalization and also the communication power of internet, we will definitely need experts to help preserving at its best all the Art and Antique collections. And in terms of Insurance, Tom Sargent is a key worldwide person.

Lagoon’s Sea Land Luxury Apartments in Tel Aviv

0
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Tel Aviv is one of the world’s great cities. It is cosmopolitan, urbane, and has been a go-to destination for Israel’s youth as the place to go and “grow up” and get a taste of adult life. Similarly, it is a regular destination for travelers from around the world, young and old as there is always so much going on that there is sure to be something of interest, irrespective of age.
Another point of interest when it comes to Tel Aviv is that the city is always evolving. Be it new building projects, refurbishment of city spaces, new walking and cycling tracks; Tel Aviv is a city always on the improve so it is absolutely never boring.
There are things that a city can build to attract tourists, yet there are other factors which cannot be replicated. One of Tel Aviv’s greatest attributes is its coastline and beaches. This is a natural treasure that money can’t buy and something that Tel Aviv has in abundance. Realizing the force of this treasure, the Tel Aviv Municipality has been developing neglected parts of the foreshore over the past decade, with the Tel Aviv Port becoming a magnet for tourists and locals alike with a diverse range of bars, restaurants, and shops catering for every taste. More recently, the Jaffa Port has been refurbished to take advantage of its prime location and historical significance. There have also been walking and cycling tracks created to link the two ports as well as new parks.
It is obvious as to why the Mediterranean coastline is such an attraction as the water is clean and clear, and the sand sparkling and soft. However, it is another natural attribute of Israel that is the icing on the cake – its weather. Summer in Israel lasts for about six months of the year and winter for perhaps two months. Even during winter though, it is not uncommon to be able to walk around in short sleeves or short pants and even enjoy a dip in the ocean. This is a far cry from a North American or European winter and means that the beach in Tel Aviv is a year-round focal point.
20140124-064331.jpg
Property in a tiny country like Israel is at a premium. The economy is strong and demand is sky high. Demand for prime beachfront property such as Lagoon’s sea land luxury apartments in Tel Aviv is even higher as it is always the best that sets the stage for those that follow. A prime location with beach views and proximity to the beach is always in demand and this is something that these apartments have in spades. Add to this incredible design and the highest build quality that money can buy and you are onto a real winner.
If Tel Aviv has one pitfall it is that it is perhaps too full-on and can wear out even the hardiest of travelers. To really survive in Tel Aviv you need a haven – your own apartment that gives you ready access to all that Tel Aviv has to offer but with the ability to find a quiet place where you can recharge your batteries. Lagoon’s sea land luxury apartments are one such place.

Andy Gott Behind the scenes – Hollywood portraits

0
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Andy Gott, one of the most talented photographers of his generation is presenting a new exhibition called “Behind the scenes”. It is taking place at

Hollywood land of stars

Hollywood was always full of stars. From Glamour to drama, every decade held its legends. Some of them were a star for one film, others last … For ever. Most of them were iconized thanks to the talent of more or less known photographers. We all have in mind iconic portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Fred Astaire, or more recently Sharon Stone, Robert de Niro or Nicole Kidman. Some of those photographies contributed to starrify those people, and some of these portraits became even pieces of Art. And I would not even talk about the work of certain artists like Warhol. But after a while, those portraits are delivered with no surprises. It means that nothing really different pops up and then the cliché starts. That’s why the work of Andy Gott is crucial.

Andy Gott and the black & white portrait

Andy Gott is away from clichés. The black and white portrait is a difficult exercise. There is no color to mask untalented photographers and the attention of the viewer goes directly to the quality of the exercise. No cheating. First you need a great model, with a great attitude. And then you need to master perfectly the art of Photography. And the more your model can be a cliché, the more talented you need to be. And this is the case of Andy Gott.
For the past 20 years he photographed the most well-known Hollywood stars in a way that only him could get. He knowns how to enter the level of intimacy required to obtain something more than a red lipstick or a black tie. The new generation of photographers have much to learn as they all get influenced by fashion standards without going a little step further. Andy Gott transcends the moment to capture a hint of what can be behind the mask of celebrity. His portraits are fascinating and now we are celebrating his work through a new art exhibition in London.

‘Behind The Mask’ new exhibition

At the Somerset House in London you will be able to see until February 7th, a collection of portraits done of the winners or nominees of the Bafta (British Academy for Film and Television arts) in the past years.

Núria Pié, ceramic poetess – Alta Phone

0
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Núria Pié is a Spanish Artist. Or should we say a Catalan Artist to be precise. After a complete education in Arts, she dedicated herself to one of the most noble arts: Ceramic. As a magician, she creates amazing things from simple ideas. And when the idea becomes true in ceramic, the result is purely beautiful.
In a world where electronics are everywhere and that every single object has now a WiFi connection on it, Ceramic objects are rare. While Google tries to build an electronic world, Artists like Núria Pié tries to make you remember about the beauty of things and that probably you do not need all the time an electronic device to make the magic happens. And this is the purpose of her new creation: the Alta Phone.

The Alta Phone is a very original project. It is all about Low-Tech and the beautiful simplicity of it. When you bought your Smartphone, you realized you could replace your MP3 player with it (among other things). But the problem is the sound. The embedded speakers are not powerful enough. So a new market was created: the Sound Dock stations. Several brands like Bose, Philipps, Samsung… Proposed their own stations. It can charge your Smartphone and play music from
It. Most of the time these stations are not really portable or even nice to have in your living room or bedroom.
Núria Pié found a nice solution to this. By getting inspired with the beginning of music and the first amplifiers, the Alta Phone uses the best of multiple disciplines. It does dot use electricity and it is a magnificent object to have. Sometimes, simple ideas are the best ones.
If you wish to learn more about Núria Pié and the Alta Phone, you can check the Artist website: http://nuriapie.com
Beautiful things always happen for a reason.

SIHH 2014, Boldness was never so elegant.

0
Reading Time: 6 minutes

Timepiece lovers start well the year thanks to the SIHH in Geneva. In deed, Christmas is still not far away and we can already keep dreaming of amazing creations by Cartier, Piaget, Montblanc or Roger Dubuis among others. Here are some highlights of what you will be able to discover next week.

SIHH-Logo-HD

CARTIER – Tank MC Skeleton Pink Gold

Cartier-SIHH-2014

Some Brands play the Skeleton concept in showing as much as they can the mouvement inside. This exercise is basically using a almost non-existing dial with a transparent back. In the case of Cartier, the entire 9611 mouvement was developed on this purpose. The Bridges were made in the shape of Roman numbers, so it serves the purpose of the dial. The result is a magnificent aspect of technicity and design.  For the 2014 SIHH, Cartier will reveal a new rework of the Tank MC Skeleton. This time the entire timepiece will be presented in Pink Gold. Every single detail of this timepiece is purely beautiful. The Pink Gold usage gives a soften and perhaps more feminine touch to this timepiece. Last year the Palladium version was definitely more masculine.

Technical specs

  • Case in 18K pink gold of 43.80 mm (height) x 34.50 mm (width) x 9.3 mm (thickness)
  • Dial decorated with Roman numerals formed by the movement bridges
  • Hands sword shape golden color steel
  • Mouvement Cartier 9619 MC = mechanical movement with manual winding /
    20 jewels / 138 components / 28800 alt / h / 3 days power reserve.
  • Glass and caseback in Sapphire glass
  • Brown alligator strap with a folding clasp closed double adjustable 18K pink gold
  • Water resistance = 30m

MONTBLANC – TimeWalker Extreme Chronograph DLC

Montblanc-SIHH-2014
When Montblanc launched the TimeWalker range in 2004, the Brand wished to propose a very elegant, yet innovative and modern chronograph. Now 10 years later, Montblanc stays true to the TimeWalker DNA with this new version. The most striking characteristic is the treatment of the case. Done in Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC) Black 4, it procures an extreme resistance to the steel and a very subtle black mate look. The high-tech bracelet is also a very interesting innovation that has a special treatment to increase resistance.

Technical specs

  • Stainless steel 43mm case with DLC coating Black 4
  • Scratch Resistant Sapphire Crystal Domed anti-reflective treatment on both sides
  • Black dial with numbers with Super-LumiNova luminescent hands
  • Fluted crown blasted stainless steel with DLC coating

  • Buckle blasted stainless steel with DLC Black 4
  • Water resistance = 30m

JAEGER-LECOULTRE – Master Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon

Jaeger-LeCoultre-SIHH-2014

A few days before the start of 2014 SIHH, Jaeger LeCoultre revealed the 11th opus of its range called Hybris Mechanica. As usual, they surprise us with an astonishing Grande complication, tourbillon, with only 7.9mm thick! Amazing watch-making mastery. To accomplish this masterpiece, not less than 8 patents were necessary (6 are new). It has a new ultra efficient spiral, a system of automatic winding device, a retractable push mono-button and finally a new minute repeater with a reducing downtime system. This movement is equipped with a flying tourbillon with a balance wheel, a world premiere which offers full visibility on the balance and the spring.

Technical specs

  • 41mm 18ct White gold case. 7.9mm thickness.
  • Dial grained silver
  • Functions: hours, minutes, minute repeater function with reduced downtime, flying tourbillon flywheel balance
  • Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 362 = mechanical self-winding movement, assembled and decorated by hand (33.3 mm x 4.8 mm / 471 components / 21,600 alt / h / 45h power reserve
  • Black alligator strap Jaeger-LeCoultre closed in a white gold buckle
  • Water  resistance = 30m

VACHERON CONSTANTIN – Malte Tourbillon Collection Excellence Platine

Vacheron-Constantin-SIHH-2014

There are Timepieces that go beyond the watch-making. They are purely pieces of art in which only the expert collector will give all its credits. And this one is exactly the translation of this exceptional work. Launched in 2006, Vacheron Constantin completes its Excellence Platine collection with a new timepiece. With its distinctive Tonneau case look, the Malte Tourbillon Collection Excellence Platine is one in a kind. The entire case and dial are made in the precious metal. The dial has a sand-treatment that brings a contrast with the hours/minutes indication. On the center bottom part of the dial, we can see the tourbillon that also carries the seconds hand. One year ago, Greubel Forsey presented its Tourbillon 24 seconds Contemporain. This year they will reveal a new version with an original Royal Blue Titanium movement. 2 variants: Red Gold and Grey Gold. The entire originality of this timepiece comes from the balance and the distribution in space of every single element, from the front dial to the back-case. 5N Red gold or White Gold 43.5 mm Case
– Hours turn in sapphire

Digital Business, when internet went from IT to Marketing.

Digital-Business-today
In the 60′s, Internet was not a dream anymore but a strong technical reality. Since then the World Wide Web developed rapidly and today, we cannot live in a world without internet. Of course today’s web activities have nothing to do with the first nods connected several decades ago. In the last 10 years, Internet evolved exponentially. From an I.T. pure activitiy driven by technology, today, internet became a marketing and business activity. The added value went from informatics infrastructure to be placed in the user experience and customer management. Read more here:
