Tablets are all over the place. And if 2012 was the year of mobile, 2013 is the year of tablets. And because our life is becoming more and more digital, Victorinox launches the first Knife kitchen block for digital Chefs.

Tablets will be part of your life

Last year, around 120 million tablets were sold in the world. In 2013, tablet sales might reach 140 million and by the horizon of 2016, we are talking about 370 million tablets, which will represent 35% of all electronic devices.

Tablets are useful companions as you can use them at home, in public transportation and at the office. It is easier to use than a computer as well as it is lighter and practical.

In terms of digital devices purchases, today PCs represent around 20% of sales, then comes 15% for tablets and 65% for smartphones. By 2015, tablets will override PCs. It is inevitable.

Cooking recipes and lessons are a big theme

In terms of lifestyle, one of the biggest current trends is cooking. There are thousands of books about cooking, per type of speciality, per meal, per ingredients… The choice is large and most of them are library best-sellers.
Cook-Books

Some of these books are written by famous chefs. They became the new super stars, like Jamie Oliver. They have their own TV shows, their own schools, prizes and even they open restaurants in franchises.

collection-jamie-oliver

Cooking lessons are also very popular. According to the Guardian and Die Zeit, cooking lessons became the number one activity  for urban people in the context of dating and extra-professional hobbies.

When digital enters the kitchen

Because tablets and smartphones entered our lives, naturally they also entered our kitchens. A tablet is lighter than dozens of books and you can always find online the perfect recipe for your meal.

cooking-with-ipad

Since the launch of the first tablet, we have now several cooking apps, that help you to find easier all the recipes you need, to save your preferred ones and even get social with other food lovers. Out of hundreds of apps, here is a short selection, made for iPads,  of the best cooking apps you might find in the iTunes store.

Paprika – Recipes managementPaprika-recipes-manager

Paprika is an excellent app. You can access recipes from more than 190 websites and collect them in one app. You can also scale all different ingredients and make the recipes at your taste. You can create your own folders by themes or by type of meal. It is a very professional tool and for that, the cost is around 20$ (which is expensive for an app). But if you are a heavy users of recipes, definitely you need this app.

Cook’s Illustratedcooks-illustrated

This is one of the most complete app for cooking. Despite of the recipes for appetizers, main courses to breakfasts and desserts, you can also have advices for which products to buy, which brands, so that next time you go to the grocery store, you know which butter to buy or vinegar or olive oil.

Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner
all-recipes-dinner-spinner

This app is very interesting as you can match the perfect side dish to your main course. This is very practical as sometimes you wonder what should you serve with salmon, or pork or even Thai chicken masala! Another interesting feature is that you can browse recipes that take less than an hour to be prepared. This can be very helpful when you are starving or when suddenly a couple of friends just came for dinner.

Of course, the more you use your tablet in the kitchen, the more risks you take to generate a cooking accident. It means that after a while your tablet gets dirty with flour, eggs or any sauce you had on your fingers… To clean it can be quite annoying or difficult.

Cooking-with-ipad-problem

That’s why you need a specific support for your tablet while cooking, so that it remains safe from your artistic cooking gestures. Several supports or stations are available but they are always something extra you need to place in your kitchen table. And often there is no room for it.

In order to answer to this need and to lift up your style while cooking, Victorinox found the perfect balance between design, high-tech, cooking and space. And that is why they have launched the new Cutlery block for digital chefs.

Victorinox Knife block for digital chefsVictorinox-Cutlery-Bloc-360-Digital

The-Raw-Project-Sebastiano-Vitale-Black-horse

The Raw project is a series of fine prints in a very limited edition, photographic objects and sculptures, for galleries and collectors. Sebastiano Vitale is the photograph and the concept creator for this project. His aim was to create a “hymn to the relationship between the horse and the human being.”

5 main chapters are written within the project from Mongolia to Iceland, towards Italy, Spain, Argentina, Brazil and USA. Sebastiano Vitale captured the essence of today’s life interaction between Horses and men. All Horses lovers will be fascinate with this artwork. It is also in a way, a quest for reconnection with nature. The only way men will live in peace with the planet is to feel truly part of it.

There is also something very noble in the horse. Its symbol reflects many important topics as honor, loyalty, elegance, bravery, together hood … Many feelings that can be so inspiring for humans.

In order to understand better what and who is behind this project, here is an exclusive interview for Luxuryactivist.com, that will give you a deeper understanding of this outstanding work.

About the Raw Horse project:

The-Raw-Horse-Sebastiano-Vitale

LuxuryActivist (LA): What was the inspiration to start the Raw Horse project ?
Sebastiano Vitale (SV): I grew up in the nature and i have a profound respect for animals of any kind. Horses are simply beautiful friends and wise advisors. I was shooting for a magazine, a project about Polo in Argentina, I was living in Buenos Aires at the time. I was shooting with a kind of editorial approach when naturally I started to get a bit crazy with the camera. I couldn’t stop. I realized that horses can be a kind of metaphor for ancestral human feelings like happiness, sadness, freedom, fear, love, and I realized that horses are in immense world to explore, both visually and geographically. And again I couldn’t stop. At the moment i shot in Argentina, Poland, UK, Italy, USA, soon will be the time for Mongolia, Iceland, UAE, and more and more. The Raw Horse took shape as series of limited edition prints for galleries and exhibitions, and of course a limited edition big size art book, currently in development.

LA: Horses are a very popular theme, what is new in your approach of such an universal theme?
SV: Horses are a great source of inspiration, and equine art is a world itself, people like Tim Flach or Arthus-Bertrand did masterpieces. At the same time amongst the horse photographers is quite difficult to find a personal style and an artistic approach where images and subjects become a visual gate to something else. I try to work exactly on this aspect, using the horses as metaphors, and their beauty as magnetic attraction for the viewer. I don’t think my approach is new, or special, it is simply my approach, it is completely spontaneous and kind of wild and free.

LA: What kind of material did you use (any special camera or lens)?
SV: I use an average camera, a normal canon, with a normal lens, no tele, no zoom. I work a little bit on postproduction of course, i want the result to be in between naif paintings, photography, expressionism. I often use movement and blur, any camera can do it. I even like sometimes to use not professional cameras.

LA: Do you have a preferred photo ? If yes why so?
SV: I like a bunch of them particularly but I am a friend of all of the chosen for the project. Some are better than others visually speaking, but some reminds me to incredible moments i experienced, and I want the public to feel something through my memories, anything. The Raw Horse consists of a number of shots, few of them are selected as limited edition prints for galleries. I could say those are my favorites.

About the artist, Sebastiano Vitale:

Sebastiano-Vitale

LA: How did the passion for photography come to you ?
SV: I work in visual arts, media and communication since more than 15 years. I did everything, as artist or managing other people’s work, producing, whatever. My life changed in Bolivia, helping a friend, Marco Vernaschi, a well known photographer, to shoot  a project about cocaine production. We were two guys in the jungle and lots of fun and risks around. I was shooting videos, I realized that being in the middle of nowhere telling stories is a great life. I did a bit of video journalism, but i was feeling much more confident with photography, even if I have to confess that is few years that I began with photos, but it took less than a day to learn, and it was so incredibly natural that I suddenly understood that photography was the thing I was looking for while constantly mixing media as I was doing in the past.

LA: How would you describe your style as a photographer?
SV: I have no idea where to put a light or a tripod, while I am a kind of street animal. I just go out and have fun with the story I am working on. Shooting takes one second, preparing the shooting is the real deal. Researching subjects, getting familiar with the people around it, getting confidence and permissions, teasing the subject, disappearing in the context and let the flow work for you… With the horses is the same, and it is fun. I can’t work in a studio and I need a great reason to shoot a landscape (actually I did it recently in New Mexico and I had unexpected fun), I dive into stories and I explore contexts. I think that photos visually represent my approach and my point of view on this planet.

LA: What are your inspirations in general?
SV: Way too many. Lately I am much more inspired by meaningless and simple things than by masterpieces. Little stories, moments, any kind of human beings, dogs, wine, food. I am a believer of late wake up and great ideas come out often in bed while fighting with the morning.

LA: What do you think about Internet as a mean to communicate your art?
SV: Art has always been together with history and media. Who knows what Mozart or Cezanne could have done with internet, both in terms of concept and distribution of their work. I love mass distribution, I love reaching a global audience, I love getting in touch with people everywhere on this planet. Internet is the gateway to this. The Raw Horse is possible only because of the energy, collaborations and word of mouth generated by chance on Facebook. I took planes to meet or work with people that I never met before, Facebook fan or friends that like what I do to the point of working together. It has been a huge surprise, and the sky is the limit to what we can do while drinking a glass of wine at home having fun on internet.

LA: What future projects are you working now that you could tell us about?
SV: I am working on two other photography projects, one is about ghosts and haunted places, it will be a book, while the other is called Surrealia and it is a collection of totally weird unreal moments I experienced while shooting for projects. But I have also Cocaland, a powerful live show, a concert where music goes together with projections of videos i shot with cocaine producers and with the special force against narcotraffic in Bolivia, an actor read a text written for the show by a former cocaine producer. It is quite tough. Music goes from acoustic techno to punk jazz, from cumbia to psychedelic latin. I did the videos and I play guitar in the band. It is great fun… Coming soon to USA and UK.

Digital content piracy, the cause of all evil? Not really.

0
Reading Time: 10 minutes

Every year it is the same old song. Because of digital piracy, the artists and studios loose a lot of money…. bla, bla, bla… So here some interesting facts that might rebalance the topic.

Idea #1: Illegal film Downloads will kill the movie industry. False!

Here is the top 10 most illegally downloaded films in 2012 and, in comparison, the overall legal sales obtained worldwide.

Most-downloaded-films
So, as we can see here above, all most illegally downloaded movies are all blockbusters in the charts. If you think that the 2012 Batman and the Avengers were both best hits on sales and on illegal downloads, we can see that there is no correlation between piracy and the fact that people would go less to the movies. Please note that all downloads here were collected by Torrent Freak, on bit-torrent downloads from January 1st to mid-December 2012.

Most-downloaded-films-2012

Of course, all major hollywood studies think that they are loosing a lot of money because of all these downloads, but frankly I am not sure that we would systematically add all these downloads into tickets sold in theaters. Most of these downloads are from people that would never go to the movies anyway or that went once and wishes to review again without paying twice.

At the contrary, we could imagine that the illegal downloads contributed to the film reputation and spread throughout the world. Some films or even TV series used this “illegal” yet super viral way to distribute their content to increase the popularity.

If we compare to the legal downloads, lets take iTunes as a platform, we can see that in 2012, the Avengers, 21 Jump Street and Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol were also part of the top 10 most downloaded films for rental (source: iTunes store).

So no, the illegal downloads do not kill the movie industry. The movie industry is killing itself. They actually do not need pirates for that.

Idea #2: Illegal Music downloads will kill the music industry. False!

Let’s see now the music illegally downloaded. The music industry has been the biggest fighter against piracy of all times. Indeed, since the music industry went digital, we could finally calculate the figures. Of course, before internet we all copied “illegally” from one original cassette to another. And when the CD came, all IT mechands sold alot of CD burners… wonder why?

So here are the top 10 of biggest countries for illegal download and the most popular downloaded artist. The figures you can see here below were measured by monitoring music firm Musicmetric for the BBC and it measured the number of torrents downloaded from January 1st to end of June 2012.

Most-downloaded-artists-2012

According to Musicmetrix, the United States as alone almost 100 million illegal downloads of music in 2012, which is twice more than the second country, United Kingdom. So last year the singer Drake was the most illegally downloaded artist in the USA. Did this hurt his sales overall? No.

Drake-Take-Care-Album

End of 2012, Drake sold 2 million albums in the USA, ranked number 3 in the US Billboard 200 and was number one album in the US Top R&B/Hip-hop albums and US Top Rap Albums. Only in the first week, this album sold for 650’000 units.
Another interesting fact is the presence in the most illegally downloaded artists of Billy Van, especially in Brazil and in India. End of 2011, Billy Van was a promising yet unknown artist in Indiana USA. A new project takes place and the decision to work with BitTorrent as a partner rises. The Music label in agreement with the artist, decide to release a full experience online for download, including free music.

Billy-Van-Bittorrent

The idea is to launch Billy Van career thanks to the buzz of delivering official free music via BitTorrent. What happened until end of 2012?

  • 7 million downloads worldwide
  • From 2’000 likes on Facebook to more than 100’000 fans
  • +700% of increase of traffic on the artist website
  • Email database from 100 addresses to 60’000 addresses.

What did this to Billy Van career? Well now he is worldwide known. He is getting more frequent well-paid remixing and production jobs and is working on his first full album. To quote Bob Lefsetz, music critics and blogger, we are living now in an Attention economy. Basically, Artists, marketers, brands or labels need to fight for the attention of consumers in order to exist. How to get this attention? By being creative, in completely breakage from the standards in the dying music industry. Marketers need to be creative and artists need to have outstanding content to survive.

To give a last example on the music industry, Rihanna’s Talk That Talk album, which is a worldwide success, got 1’228’313 illegal downloads in 2012. In that same year, Rihanna’s album sold for 2’442’000 units worldwide too, making the album a double platinum record and one of the most successful albums of the year. What if nobody would cheat? Would Rihanna sell more? No. Because of 2 reasons: First because most of the pirates would never buy the real album and second, the buzz and viral effect would have been weaker. So sales would spread slower and perhaps even concert tickets would have been lower in terms of sales. Who knows.

The IFPI, (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) represents the recording industry worldwide with some 1300 members in 66 countries and affiliated industry associations in 55 countries. According to their figures, more than 30% of the total music industry sales come from legal downloads. Digital music has been growing by 8% in average every year since 2005. In some countries like the USA or the UK (countries with the biggest rate of illegal downloads), this growing rate is a double digit every year.

Digital music models are evolving towards new ways to listen to music. Subscription is one of these. Services like deezer or Spotify are changing drastically the way people buy and listen to music. Spotify declares to have today 6 million users with a paid subscription. Another new behavior is video music. In deed Youtube became one of the biggest platforms for music listening in the world. In the US, 64% of teenagers listen primarily to music via Youtube, then via radio, iTunes and only then from a CD. The world changed and the music industry needs to adapt.

So no, the illegal music downloads are not killing the music industry. It has more like a booster effect for worldwide successes.

Idea #3: Illegal Software downloads will kill the Software industry. False!

Softwares make the world turn round. All computers and devices would be useless without softwares to run it. Or they would be simple objects. So software is the key. Historically speaking, softwares have been the target of pirates for several decades. From video games to business solutions. So how illegal software downloads are hurting the business. It is not so obvious.

According to Dailytech, the global loss because of piracy is about $50.1Billion. Until 2009,  almost 43% of all softwares around the world in computers was pirated. The world top pirate countries are:

  • Georgia, almost 95% of all software is claimed to be illegal
  • Zimbabwe
  • Bangladesh
  • Moldova
  • Armenia
  • Yemen

The top 4 countries with the lowest score of illegal software are:

  • USA with less than 20% of all software
  • Luxembourg
  • New Zealand
  • Australia

According to YahooNews! more than 900 million computers in Asia have illegal software installations on it.

But how bad really this is for companies being victim of piracy. Let’s take the example of Microsoft. Why? Because Windows operating system and the Microsoft office suite are the most pirated softwares in the world. According to FAST, Federation Against Software Theft, here are the most pirated softwares in the world:

  1. Microsoft Office, with 24% of pirated installations.
  2. Microsoft Windows with 24%
  3. Adobe Photoshop with 16%
  4. Adobe Illustrator with 16%
  5. Adobe Creative Suite with 10%
  6. Solidworks with 6%
  7. SQL with 6%
  8. Quark with 4%
  9. Autocad with 4%
  10. Virtual DJ with 2%

So how Microsoft is surviving this tsunami? Not that bad actually. In 2012, Microsoft announced a total revenue of $73’723’000’000 and a profit of $21’763’000’000. Not bad for a company being victim of so many robbery. If we take only the revenue from the sales of Microsoft Office, these represent $23’991’000’000 for a profit of $15’719’000’000. This represents a evolution of +7% vs previous year.

If we take the second victim in our table here, we are talking about Adobe. In 2012, Adobe made a total revenue of $4’404’000’000 which is +7% vs 2011. With a employee growth rate of +12% every years, it is hard to see difficulties.

Aside of Softwares, what about Apps for mobile devices? With more than 45 billion apps downloaded in 2012 from legal platforms (+74% increase vs 2011), we can say that the App business is pretty legal. According to the main platforms (Apple, Amazon, Google) there will be 300 billion apps downloaded every year by 2016. All from legal platforms. source: Mashable.com. So we cannot really say that software companies are having a hard time right?

Digital content, a different approach of ownership.

We can see piracy or illegal downloads are not really the problem. It is about aligning the entire Content producers industries to better serve the today’s consumer habits. People tend to consume content in a different way and also depending on the content itself. We all have singers that we will always buy music from them, and others not. Or we all have movies that we would not pay to watch them in theaters but would be happy to watch them for free.

Another interesting topic is also the dematerialization of possession. How did we evolve from ownership to rights of usage? From a real CD to Spotify, we loose the physical ownership of a CD towards the subscription of a right to access the content. By the way, you can inherit from your grand-father all his CD and vinyl’s collection, not his Spotify account!

There is a lot of education to be done too. It is not because something is available in the internet that it is for free. The hardest topic right now is about images. Some websites quote as a image source: Google Images, like if the entire internet became a free library. People need to understand the difference between free access and free of rights. Some photographers tend to believe that Internet killed copyrighting and the in exchange artists get in a few month, a level of worldwide awareness that would take them several years to accomplish it. Evolution is requested.

So the industry needs to evolve. Check the example of Netflix. It is an american online service in which you can watch on-demand videos, movies, series and even television. By mid-2013, Netflix has 37 million users around the world who generated a 3.6 $billion revenue. The netflix.com has around 200 million visitors every year and it is expanding successfully around the globe. It is not revolution but evolution.

It started in 2008 when Felix Baumgartner and Maximilian Büsser shared the same original idea of this outstanding brand. Mr Baumgarter is also the co-founder of Urwerk with Martin Frei. Both, they had the idea of a concept featuring a movement inspired by a Wankel engine. The principal of Wankel engine was that the main 4 stages (intake, compression, combustion and exhaust) took place in one rotation.

The mouvement is inspired by this construction as it has an epicyloid.

Miuccia Prada never sleeps, or at least her brain. Under her brand Miu Miu, she released a 6 films series called Women’s tales.

Miu-Miu-Womens-tale

While Prada brand is getting stronger and stronger, Miu Miu seemed to be taken to a second league. Or the Prada group is changing the situation as they wish to move on with both 2 brands. While Prada catwalks in Milano, Miu Miu is in Paris, so right now as the New York fashion week is over, every body is getting ready for London, Paris and Milano. The Prada Group brought new people for Miu Miu. Some of them comes from Celine and others from the Prada brand itself. So the goal is to multiply and to develop Miu Miu as strong as Prada. So lately they invested a lot of money and time creating a serie of 6 films called Miu Miu Women’s Tales.

Miu-Miu-Womens-tales-series

Commissioned by the italian brand, The women’s tales is a series of 6 short films. Collaborations with people like Zoe Cassavetes, Lucrecia Martel or Massy Tadjedin, show interesting cinema themes and a certain point of view in fashion. The goal remains to make you believe in the dream universe of fashion but above all, shows the complex position of being a woman today in the world. While the Biennale de Venezia was celebrating its 70 years, Miu Miu revealed a new and last short-film called “Le Donne della Vucciria”. Palestinian female director Hiam Abbass contemplates the transformative power of clothes, music and dance in a charming, evocative study of the women of the Sicilian city of Palermo.
LE DONNE DELLA VUCCIRIA

LE DONNE DELLA VUCCIRIA 2

Watch the entire film here:

Here is the pitch for the film according to the brand own words: “The dressmaker sews in time, creating a mysterious collection of traditional puppet costumes, while the square below comes alive with music and dancing. As a cast of vibrant women rise and join the musicians in a crescendo of spinning polka dots and clapping metallic suede heels the dressmaker looks on, leaving us to wonder who really pulls the strings of this intoxicating fiesta.

What is beautiful in this modern tale,is the nostalgic feeling that we get in the first minutes. It is deep, well done and beautifully directed. If you want to see the previous 5 films, you can find them here:

Women’s tale #5: THE DOOR BY AVA DuVERNAY

Women’s tale #4: IT’S GETTING LATE BY MASSY TADJEDIN

Women’s tale #3: THE WOMAN DRESS BY GIADA COLAGRANDE

Women’s tale #2: MUTA BY LUCRECIA MARTEL

Women’s tale #1: THE POWDER ROOM BY ZOE CASSAVETES

Miu Miu is back stronger than never. Check the brand official website to get more information about the Women’s tales project and also about the brand itself:

Palimpsestes, when politics and arts meet. At mor.charpentier in Paris.

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Since 2010, the mor.charpentier art gallery in Paris has been differentiating itself, from other established galleries,  by their choice of artists and exhibitions. Discover this fall their new exhibition called Palimpsestes. In order to understand the relationship between art and politics, the starting point is the political language. From September 7th until November 9th 2013.

Palimpsestes-exhibition

9 artists from several places and periods who translate the emotional power of politics into different supports. Interesting contrast between art, supposed to be beautiful and “artistic” and the subject called politic. In this case could we consider the artist as a revolutionary? Here some examples of some works you can see in this interesting exhibition.

Charwei-Tsai-meat-map
The Meat Map by Charwei Tsai

In this work, called Meat Map, as you can see above, taiwan-born artist Charwei Tsai represent the map of China with raw meat. It is a strong symbol of paradox. In one side, we can see the cruelty in many aspects of the communist system in China. In another side we could see the aim of the party, here linked to the idea of nation, to be immortal. Of course, depending on which position you are, you might have your own interpretation. This is one of the strongest work by Charwei Tsai. She also made public performances in places like Tokyo in 2008 in order to push people to think about what is happening in China. Photo here below of this performance.

Another interesting work presented at the mor.charpentier gallery this fall is Maria Elvira Escallón installation called Polvo Eres. You can see a video of the carving of these words, Polvo Eres, on a wall in a central hall of an abandoned hospital in Colombia. This basically makes a biblical reference to show the failure of an entire system.

Maria-Elvira-Escallón-Polvo-Eres

Born in London but living and working in Bogota, Colombia, Maria Elvira Escallón keeps a clever look on the government policy towards education, health and security. She studied psychology before choosing Arts, so her work is meant to bring you a feeling that should make you think about what you see in relation to your own existence.

Another interesting artistic work, completely aligned with the air of times, it is the Unclassified, Secret, Confidential: Outgoing Message by Voluspa Jarpa. See below:

Voluspa-Jarpa-Unclassified-secret-confidential-outgoing-message

This triptique is laser acrylic cuts from recent declassified CIA documents.  Voluspa Jarpa was born in Chile in the 70’s. He lives and work in Santiago. This interesting work evokes all the intelligence work done by the CIA in Latin America, like if part of those countries’s history. Of course as all this was kept secret, it is like if certain pieces of the puzzle would never be found. So part of our history will be missing.

Last work highlighted here is called: “quelque chose” by Julieta Hanono. These 2 words mean litteraly “Something” in french. OF course in this precise context, it makes a direct reference to Lacan’s defition of this word. According to him, before any major event, revolution or even natural, there is “something” that is at the origin of the following events, actions.

Julieta-Hanono-quelque-chose

Julieta Hanono was born in Buenos Aires in 1962. When she turned 16, she was put in prison for 13 month by the military dictatorial system. In 1990 she moved to Paris and since 2004 she is back to Argentina. All her work as an artist is influenced by her dark period during the dictature. It is also in a certain way to unveil what was hidden for so many years.

I would also add that the installation in the mor.charpentier gallery is also very interesting as the artists work are completely well highlighted. The purity of the white walls, like a white page in which we would write, sometimes with blood, the words of politics.

Sissel Kyrkjebø, the voice of heaven… purely magical.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you love beautiful voices, you need to know this amazing artist, Sissel Kyrkjebø. Her voice is like hearing the sound of an angel. She is a great artist and at LuxuryActivist, she is in our speakers every day. She is our music artist of the month.
Sissel-Kyrkjebø

Sissel from Norway…

Sissel Kyrkjebø was born on June 24th, 1969 in Bergen, a city on the west coast of Norway. She is mostly known as Sissel. She is also considered as one of the world’s top crossover sopranos and her musical style is very broad. From pop, towards folk, classical vocals, and opera. What strikes us when you hear her voice for the first time, is that she was a beautiful crystal voice.

Sissel-Kyrkjebø-portrait

She sounds like if the doors of heaven have opened just at that precise moment you hear it. Fantastic. Her wide vocal range, brings her for performances going from down mezzo-soprano notes up to the F natural above Soprano C. All albums combined, Sissel sold more than 10 million albums. Most of them only in Norway, a country with 5 million people! She is also very popular in all Scandinavian countries as well as in Japan.

… to International recognition.

With a solid success and career at home, Sissel had a full spectrum of possibilities at the international level. It was just a matter of the right opportunity. And this happened in 1994 when she was invited to sing the Olympic hymn at the winter Olympic games of Lillehammer. It was an amazing moment for her as millions of people around the world would probably hear her voice for the first time.

Then, another important year for Sissel was 1997. On that year, 2 main events marked her international career. The first one is the collaboration with American singer Warren G on his interpretation of the Polovetsian Dances of Prince Igor Opera. While Warren G raped, the Russian refrain was performed by Sissel. Check the amazing appearance of Sissel as an “outer-space goddess”.

Then, just a month later in November, another great opportunity is presented to the public worldwide. The Titanic movie by James Cameron. Sissel collaborated in the movie soundtrack and as you know, it sold for more than 30 million copies. Years later, in 2007, Sissel gets a Grammy award nomination for her work with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on the album – Spirit of the season. During her international career, she also performed collaborations with Placido Domingos, José Carreras, Diane Krall, or Charles Aznavour. She is definitely an accomplished artist. Here an amazing concert selection, 45mn of Sissel and José Carretas as a special guest.

You can find all available albums on different platforms, here 2 of them:
