Richard Nicoll Studio Visit
New year, new clothes. The AW13 collections are earlier than ever this season, as the second London Collections: Men kicks off today ahead of Pitti, Milan and Paris, following the success of the capital's AW12 standalone schedule. As designers put the finishing touches to their collections; carry out castings, fittings and hair tests, we go on a series of studio visits to get a feel of what to expect. Our final behind-the-scenes peek is Richard Nicoll, who makes immaculately balancedclassicist designs from his work-space on east London's Kingsland Road.
Dazed Digital: What was the biggest challenge in putting the collection together?
Richard Nicoll:Christmas.
DD: Favourite advice you've had from someone?
Richard Nicoll:
When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
DD: Any tips for staying calm during fashion week?
Richard Nicoll:Xanax.
DD: ...Or staying awake when there's so much work to do?
Richard Nicoll:Strong Coffee.
DD: What were the first pieces in the collection you designed?
Richard Nicoll:The parkas and the leather pieces.
DD: What are you most proud of?
Richard Nicoll:I'm really proud of the collection as a whole and proud of my team for making it happen.
DD: What other shows are you looking forward to seeing?
Richard Nicoll:
I'm actually looking forward to seeing it all.

Richard Nicoll:No-Wave, Industrial and Classical.
DD: What difference does fashion make?
Richard Nicoll:It makes none in the grand scheme of things but being able to dream is important.

Is there something in the water in Hollywood? First Rihanna and now Avril Lavigne has shaved half her head in a new hairstyle reminiscent of a punky glam rocker. She kept the color and length on the other side of her head in the same style. She isn't the only one revamping her look. Charlize Theron has shaved her blond locks for her upcoming movie role in Mad Max: Fury Road. She’s been wearing a beanie or Fedora to cover it up ever since. (Huffington Post)
Karl Lagerfeld is always known for making headlines in fashion, least of which is for his iconic black and white tuxedo look and low ponytail. So it’s no surprise Germany’s St. Pauli Panopticon has opted to preserve the legendary Chanel designer--in wax! The figure features Lagerfeld’s iconic dark sunglasses and black studded gloves. This isn’t Lagerfeld’s only headline this week. He’s also making headlines for a book of photographs based on Chanel’s Little Black Jacket. The fashion tome is made up of 113 photographs shot by Lagerfeld of models, celebrities, socialites, fashionistas, and personalities styled in the LBJ by former French Vogue Editor-In-Chief Carine Roitfeld. Chanel threw a party to celebrate an exhibit featuring the photos on display from June 8 to June 15. (Harper’s Bazaar)
Maison Martin Margiela is the next high fashion brand to collaborate with H&M! Straight off the heels of the popular team ups with Lanvin, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and Marni, the popular French has created a collection of timeless, streamlined and wearable pieces debuting on November 15. Stella McCartney travels around the world to present her collections, turning up in both England and Paris on occasions. She took to New York to showcase her Resort 2013 presentation, throwing a sweet summer party in a garden for the occasion. Raf Simons showcases his first collection for Christian Dior in an outstanding Haute Couture show in Paris this week. The former Jil Sander designer managed to attract nine heavyweight designers to watch his show, including top names Marc Jacobs, Alber Elbaz, Donatella Versace, Pierre Cardin and several more. Tight dresses and bold colors were the dominant styles on the red carpet at the 2012 BET Awards. Beyonce Knowles, who is an inspiring example for the look, walked the carpet wearing a bright yellow satin gown by Stephane Rolland. Carine Roitfeld, the former chief editor of French Vogue, styled three covers for V Magazine’s “Youth Quake Issue” featuring up and coming models such as Kati Nescher and Ava Smith. The issue, due out July 5, will also include a bonus preview of Roitfeld CR Fashion Book magazine which will launch this September. (Styleite)
Following a Mad Men collection, Banana Republic has declared to launch an Anna Karenina inspired Fall collection. Tolstoy’s classic book will be released as a film this November, starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law. (WWD)
Rihanna covers Harper’s Bazaar August issue in a dramatic golden Tom Ford gown from his Fall 2012 collection. This will be the 24-year-old’s first ever cover for the US magazine and by the looks of things, it will probably turn out more successful than her last “big and blonde” US cover for Elle. The first issue will focus entirely on erotica from a woman’s point of view. Rihanna’s ‘second career’ as a fashion icon has reached new heights. After already working on her own fashion show, she is now designing her very own collection for British high street brand River Island. The superstar said in a recent statement that River Island is the perfect partner for her to design a collection with, which is something that she wanted to do for a long time. (Styleite)
