Elīna Garanča, Wirklich Wichtig Sind Die Schuhe

This month Elīna Garanča fans got the perfect christmas gift: her first auto-biography. In an interview given for the website DiePresse.com, Ms Garanča explains some of the reasons behind this initiative. For her, the shoes are an interesting symbol. They are both what connects oneself to the ground and it can be perceived as a dream. So what is behind Cinderella crystal shoes? According to the opera singer: real life!

Elina-garanca-biography-official

She talks about her childhood in Riga and the specific moment of the world history under the Iron Curtain and the Cold war. She describes her rebellious youth, the beginnings of her success and the rocky road to the top. Her mother always used to say: “there is only one place in this singing career, and it is being number one“. You can also discover some of the “behind the scenes” in the Opera business and how her private life preserves her from the negative aspects of fame and glamorous glory.

We can also wonder why a auto-biography so young. She is only 37 years old! She explains to DiePresse.com that she wishes to show to young generations that being rejected and fighting hard for one’s dreams is a long fight and there are no miracles. It is all about hard work, courage and talent. She also thinks that if she writes a second biography by the age of 60 and more, she will be able to compare her vision of things.

The book is published in EcoWin, an Austrian independent Edition house. Founded in 2003, Ecowin focus on exciting authors with exciting topics. Deaf Preachers, Rock & Energy at the maximum.

0
Reading Time: 3 minutes

This month, discover Deaf Preachers. An amazing Rock band, between garage-rock and punk-rock. They have been playing since 2006 and the only word is: ENERGY. They are launching a new EP this month, more than one year after the first album. For this and more below, they are our Music band of the month.

End of 2006, the group was founded under the name The Bagro’s. Since then, they have been constantly playing and pushing the limits of energy on stage.

Deaf-Preachers-The-Bagros

When you listen to their music, one huge influence comes to our minds: The Stooges. In deed, the same energy, an outstanding, high voltage guitar, big drums and a virtuose at the bass. It is pure, crystal clear and will definitely burst your ears. The garage rock has never been so modern and true to its roots.

In 2009, they made their first public appearance in a rock festival, along with other amazing talents like Caravan Palace, Cut Killer, Emir Kusturica and world famous Buena Vista Social Club. In the same year they decide to change the band’s name and became Deaf Preachers. A name that should push them higher, faster and stronger in the garage rock scene.

The official members of the group, as they describe themselves, are:

  • Ben “Acid” Preacher – (Guitar/vocals)
  • Franz “Mad” Preacher – (Bass/vocals)
  • Larsen “Wise” Preacher – (Guitar/vocals)
  • Leny “Kick” Preacher – (Drums/speed)
  • Norman “Little” Preacher – (Bass)

After 2 EP’s, one in 2008 and the second one in 2010, they launched their first album called Join the deaf club in 2012.

Deaf-Preachers-First-Album-Join-the-deaf-club

Their first album gathers 12 tracks. Released on March 19th 2012, the amazing result came from a true international collaboration. Initially recorded in France by Romain Baousson, then it was mixed in Mexico and Los Angeles to finally being mastered in London by Jean-Anaël Aubaux. Here is the official clip of one of the songs called Don’t burn my face again. It gives you a hint of how powerful they can be on stage. It’s been a while that we did not ear such a great guitar.

This month, a little longer than one year after their first album, they are releasing a new 3-track album called Norman. It is a perfect continuity of their work. It is clean, pure, sophisticated and clearly edgy. You can listen and download it for free here:

An Online Magazine that gives you a Glimpse of the Luxurious Facet of Life

If it is luxury and fashion that interests you, take heart in the fact that there are many such webzines designed for you to access the latest happenings in the world of fashion and lifestyle. A luxury magazine can be based on any theme, be it art, fashion, luxury, high-tech gadgets, watches, books, beauty and such things. Even if you are not a fashionista, fashion has a role to play in everybody’s life.
Whether you realise it or not there is a little bit of fashion even in the most mundane things we do in life. In the continuing struggle between luxury and fashion, we need someone to show us that there can be a middle ground. Reading a luxury blog on topics like art, beauty, fashion, music, photography, travel and more, such topics will not only help you decide and reach a middle ground between high-end fashion and everyday affordable fashion but also teach you to love the finer things of life. The expanse of luxury blogs is so extensive that no matter what you are looking for, it will lead you in your search.

International news is most of the time a coveted item to be read and sometimes savoured too. And if that news is served in the form of webzines, you have unlimited access to all the latest happenings that would be otherwise impossible for you to know and follow, especially through the website’s feed. And so if there is a Swiss website that offers you extensive views on such fine things like fashion, music, photography, events, luxury, travel etc., you do sit up and take notice. Any website will only be relevant to you if you have all the information you actually need. Rather than smothering you with all kinds of news and happenings, it is important for the website creators to understand what the readers or the website visitors actually want. David Bowie for Vuitton, just class.

0
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Louis Vuitton revealed its new campaign called “Invitation au Voyage – Venise”. It is part of the travel theme collections, as the brand developed a full collection of products. Here the video:

An amazing collaboration between photographer David Sims and film director Romain Gavras. Both used to work for fashion houses and qualitative magazines like Vogue.  The storyboard is between a living dream and a sophisticated journey. In this short film 2 main characters are on the spot: David Bowie and Arizona Muse. David Bowie is the charm and the elegance personified. Arizona Muse, American top model, has already appeared in several Louis Vuitton ads and she completely represents the modern elegant woman with a tremendous strength of personality.

In this travel invitation, the Venetian adventure reveals the exquisite encounter between an audacious woman and an enigmatic man. The woman arrives from the sky in a hot air balloon and she is invited to a private party in a palace. The ambiance is very baroque and in the middle, David Bowie is playing the piano. A version of “I’d rather be high”. Around him all the party attendees are one more extraordinary than the other.

Suddenly at the end, Arizona Muse opens her eyes and the music stops. It is daylight and everybody have disappeared. Was it a dream? Was it a one night adventure? We can decide which version we wish to keep. Nevertheless, we see this amazing woman taking a traditional Jonk-boat and navigate towards the lagoon, as if she was moving ahead towards her destiny.

Here a photo gallery of our best moments in the film:

Louis Vuitton also released a Making of, in which you can see the tremendous work accomplished to create the unique and the marvelous.

In terms of product collection,  here are some of the high-lights. Elegance and timeless chic for this very tempting travel invitation.

It is always impressive to see how luxury brands invest so much money on qualitative content. Recently companies like Cartier or Guerlain invested a lot, especially online, in order to display their brand territories.  Here Louis Vuitton really settles their position of “THE” luxury travel company. Well done.

Larusée Bleue Absinth, now everywhere with you

0
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Switzerland is the land of watches but also the land of Absinth. A while ago you could discover Larusée, a high qualitative Swiss Absinth manufacturer. They are launching now a new 10cl bottle on their Larusée Bleue. You can easily carry it with you everywhere.

larusee-bleue-10cl

Larusée Bleue is one of the distinctive Absinths that the Swiss manufacturer has in its catalog. It is an Absinth with 55% that is both refreshing and seductive as well as captivating.

Why the green fairy is blue? Well “bleue” is a historical name that means that the Absinth is bottled right after the distillation process. So that’s why it is uncolored. Rather than the green, contains another step with a mixture of herbs. So the Bleue represents the brillant work of distillation and the quality of Absinth plants. Minimalistic. Less is more!

The standard size of Larusée bottle is 70cl, which is already a great size and the 10cl is the perfect travel companion for your weekends and more. The 10cl might also be an interesting move for Larusee as they can also propose their star product in hotels mini-bars or even on board of several airlines.

With a recommended retail price of 18.20 CHF (around 15€ or 20US$) it is a very affordable moment of pleasure and luxury. It is perfect for a christmas gift, as a promise of beautiful moments shared (or not!).

For reminder, Larusée is a Swiss family business based in the Neuchâtel region. Every single step on the production of Absinth is done accordingly to a high-strict qualitative chart. All processes are done by hand. A manual work that takes its foundation in centuries of know-how in Switzerland. Each bottle has a manual manufacturing. From the bottling itself towards labeling and sealing. The result is simply perfect.

Almost every year, Larusée wins prestigious international contests thanks to the unusual high-quality of their products. They have enough talent to not let success being the fruit of chance.

If you want to discover more about this new product from Larusée, please check the dedicated page in the manufacturer website: http://www.larusee.com. You can also discover other products from Larusée as well as more about the manufacture history.

Castor oil and Castoreum are 2 different things. Really!

0
Reading Time: 6 minutes

Do you know the difference between Castor oil and Castoreum? Well, probably you even thought it was the same thing right? More and more we can read articles talking about the usage of Beaver glands extracts  into the food industry. This might sound crazy indeed but most of these articles are pretty much serious about it. Of course it is all wrong and here is finally the explanation.  So do not hesitate to share it so that everybody is updated.

So many articles got it all wrong

As more and more food scandals happen, people get more and more interested on what is written in the ingredient list. Nevertheless, it might be hard to understand all these latin words and what is behind all that.

Lately, several articles made a mistake by mixing up Castor oil and Castoreum. The first one is originated from beans of a plant, the second a substance from Canadian and European Beavers’ scent glands. So the result of this mistake is that we tell people that what they eat comes from anal glands of a beaver. As you can imagine, these articles become very popular online as people get mad about it. Even thought it is true that the food industry used to add castoreum as a natural additive on some vanilla flavor, today the production of Castoreum in the food industry is annually of 300 pounds  / 136Kg. So nothing compared to the 2.6 million pounds / 1.2 million kg of vanillin, another substance naturally present in vanilla scent (source: Burdock, George A., Fenaroli’s handbook of flavor ingredients).

Moreover, if we check the multi-powerful U.S. Food and Drug Administration, there is no trace of any animal or Castoreum substances in the Vanilla extract. You can read the original text here: Vanilla Extract.

When you ask to top main companies in the world about castoreum, They will all tell you that it is only for fragrances, and in a very limited usage. Nevertheless, it is true that Castoreum is  considered as safe substance by the same U.S. organism. Read the official document here: Castoreum.

So most of the articles mix up Castoreum and Castor oil, that is in deed very well used in the food industry but also in cosmetics among other things. Apparently, all this mess came from Jamie Oliver, the world well known cook-chef. During the popular evening talk show of David Letterman, he “revealed” that cheap vanilla flavour is made with Castoreum. As you can already see, and will see moreover here below, Mr. Jamie Oliver should probably stay in the kitchen rather than in front of a TV camera.

Castor Oil, it is from a plant.

Castor oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the beans of the Castor plant (Ricin). The latin name is Ricinus communis The oil is colorless, tasteless and scentless. Which makes a perfect ingredient to be used in the food industry, but also in cosmetics, especially shampoos and skin creams. Every year several industries use in total between 600 to 800 million pounds, meaning 300 to 400 million kg, of Castor oil (source: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ejlt.200900138/abstract).

Castor-oil-plant

Castor_beans

Originally from Eastern Africa, India and certain areas of the Mediterranean bassin, today we can find this plant cultivated  in all tropical regions around the globe and else where of course for ornemental reasons. The 3 biggest producers of Castor oil are India, China and Brazil. It is a fat acid, so perfect for different usage, especially in flavoring. Brings a soothing effect on every texture. It is also a perfect base for any cosmetic product as an excellent anti-dryer for the skin. The usage of Castor oil is dating back to 4’000 BC. Legend says that Cleopatra in person used Castor oil to brighten the whites of her eyes and soothe her hair and skin. Please note that the originality of the beans’ look, makes them quite popular in Jewelry.  It’s price is quite affordable too. According to National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), the average price for one ton of Castor beans is around 600 dollars.

Castoreum, a real luxury ingredient

Castoreum, from the latin name of the animal Castoreum Canadense, is a oily substance obtained from 2 little internal pouches on the back of the canadian beaver.

castoreum-canadense

These pouches or glands allows the beaver to oil his fur and to mark his territory. For several centuries, Castoreum was used in luxury perfumery as part of the main 5 animal notes:

  • Castoreum, from the Canadian Beaver
  • Musc, from the Caucasian Musc Deer
  • Amber gris, from the Sperm whales
  • Civette, from the African Civet
  • Hyraceum, from the African Hyrax
  • Bee wax, from Bees

These notes are base notes, bringing richness, long-lasting and deepness to a fragrance. Most of these ingredients are not really used as for some as the Castoreum and the Musc, we need to kill the animal to obtain it. Many legislations around the world forbid this as now some of the species are protected. Another interesting point to note is that human tastes for animalic scents is also outdated and modern chemistry allows to obtain synthetic notes doing the same job as the original animal ones.

In Perfumery, Castoreum is used as a resinoid, obtained from a tincture of the beaver pouches. After a first crush into pieces, the pouches are submerged in alcohol for several weeks. The result is a strong substance. The pouches are in generally one to two years old, so the original harshness disappeared. Here below several Beaver pouches, ready to be tinctured out.

castoreum-glands

Price can also be something very limitating. Castoreum for example will cost around 600 dollars per kg, which is the price for one ton of Castor beans. In the food industry, where margins are very tight, Castoreum was replaced a long time ago by Vanillin or Castor oil. Some regions like Canada and Northen Europe continues a very small business for Castoreum as the Beavers are very prolific and need some human regulation.  As said previously, the total world production of Castoreum is around 300 pounds, 136 Kg.

So, now you know the difference between Castor Oil and Castoreum. Probably the initial misunderstanding comes from the fact that in french, Beaver is translated as Casteur. So the misunderstanding with Castor oil is quick to be done.

Now you know.

Luxury Watch Brands and Investing in Time

0
Reading Time: 5 minutes

By looking at a gentleman’s watch, you can tell a lot about him before he opens his mouth. Not only are luxury watches expensive, they require care and attention throughout their years. There are a number of reasons why you should invest in a high class watch. Status is one of the most obvious. Many believe that business men and woman can be judged on wealth and status based on their choice of watch. Not only are watches easily seen, but they are a display of a person’s style and economic status. Depending on the height of your success, it is often expected that a trustworthy businessman/woman invests in a unique timepiece that explicitly displays their wealth and value within their business.

Wearing your Wealth

In most cases, it is only you and your banker that will see the money that you have in your account. Depending on your geographical location, if you live or are doing business in a country with a volatile government, carrying cash isn’t always the best way of showing off your wealth. This is why many businessmen buy luxury goods such as watches and jewellery as a form of currency. Watches are a worldwide symbol of wealth, from Patek to Piaget, something as small as a timepiece can extremely valuable. When investing in a watch that is crafted with precious metal, it not only becomes a distinct piece of luxury jewellery but the materials it is made of are an extremely valuable investment.

What is a Watch Worth?

Ariel Adams, Editor of a Blog To Watch is an expert in horology and knows exactly how much you should be spending on a luxury piece:

“You should not spend more than you can afford on a watch. If you can afford a lot for a new watch that is all the better, but if you are pushing yourself only to think you can later resell your watch and recoup your investment, it might be worth managing your exceptions a bit. They don’t call them luxury watches for nothing.”

Ariel has advised that if you are looking for a classic mid-range mechanical Swiss watch, that you should spend $5,000 – $10,000. From there, the luxury market is limitless and if you are someone that believes that you cannot put a price on happiness, extravagant watch brands are definitely for you.

Artistry and Watch Design

“A great watch is like a museum piece, but this is a work of art you can actually wear”

The quote above was said by a man of great taste and style,  Edward Faber, the owner of Manhattan’s Aaron Faber Gallery. The lines between style and art are very thin, and much like great pieces of art, for centuries watches have been made for some of the world’s most influencial people. Whether you are looking to invest in a vintage or modern timepiece, a watch is not only an accessory but something that can be passed down from generation to generation. Horology enthusiasts are often drawn to vintage timepieces, as they have endless amounts of history behind them. Not only are vintage timepieces extremely authentic, they often have story behind them: Where has it came from? Who was it made for? And during what period of time? Over the year’s watches may have advanced in technology, but the art of watchmaking has never died. Although the millennial market has lots to over, those who believe in tradition and classic watch design may reap more value from a vintage timepiece.

Timeless Appeal

A vintage timepiece has the ability to remind its owner of a time and place, evoking extreme nostalgia and emotion.  Military watches are excellent antiques as they often tell a story from over a hundred of years ago. Antique designs may require TLC such as vintage watch restoration, however, preserving precious memories, is something that money cannot buy. Vintage Watch Restoration specialists, Repairs By Post, believe that “vintage timepieces hold a lot of emotion with their owners and often these rare pieces are irreplaceable”. With this said, if your timepiece doesn’t reach a certain standard, then it could be a waste of your money. An expert horologist would advise that if a vintage timepiece does not reach B rating mark, forget about it. The ratings for vintage watches go as the following:

  • AAA = Excellent Condition
  • AA = Very Good
  • A = Good
  • B = Fair

Investing in a Opulent and Timepiece

Investing in a luxury timepiece will not be a one of cost. When one invests in any type of luxury jewellery, they should expect the maintenance that will come with precious metal and design. When buying a luxury timepiece, it is worth remembering that a beautiful timepiece must be serviced over the years. A watch is often passed down through families and if given the right care, they have the ability to last multiple lifetimes. If watches are a traditional gift within your family, you will understand their worth as an air loom. A high class watch that is crafted with passion and extreme attention to detail, should be cared for in the appropriate manner. Make sure you are sending your luxury watch to a professional. It is recommended that you always send your watch to a specialist horologist who will treat your timepiece with the respect and care it was created with.

The Tourbillon, master complication in watch-making since 1801.

Watchmaking is an Art old of several centuries. everyIn the heart of the art of watchmaking, the Tourbillon is not only a beautiful piece of human engineering but also a very useful one in the exactitude control.

The principle of a Tourbillon

As you can see here above, the tourbillon is a concentrate of ingenuity. It eliminate most of the errors of rate, especially in the vertical position, for a wrist or pocket watch. The principle, despite the fact that each watchmaker has been adding their own touch, is about a mobile-cage in which all components are inside. The balance spring and the escapement are usually in the center.

Some history

The invention of the Tourbillon, and its first patent was accomplished by Abraham-Louis Breguet.

Abraham-Louis-Breguet

The famous Swiss brand archives tells us that Breguet invented the Tourbillon idea in 1785 and only in 1801, after some improvements, that the first patent was registered.  And the first Breguet watch equipped with the mechanism was finally sold in 1805. With this we can easily say that Mr Breguet is one of the fathers of modern watchmaking.

The invention of the Tourbillon came from the need to gain precision and exactitude in what we call mobile timepieces. This means the pocket watches for gentlemen and also, more specifically, the vertical position in airplanes and the oscillations in marine boats.

Because of these specific backgrounds, we need to talk about another important watchmaker and inventor: John Arnold. He was a English inventor who died in 1799. He is considered up to today as the most important british watchmakers in history. We can say that he was the first one to design a practical and accurate watch. This is probably what would be the first closest watch to the definition of modern chronometer.

John-Arnold-Watchmaker

John Arnold interested himself for marine timepieces and accurate chronographs. His late work brought him to imagine a mechanism that would provide a better accuracy to chronographs, especially in specific positions or situations.

John Arnold’s legacy provided the necessary inspiration to Abraham-Louis Breguet to finalize the idea of the Tourbillon. The pocket watch was the biggest challenge at that time for watchmakers. The watch would remain most of its time in the vertical position and moving all the time. So there was a big enemy called GRAVITY. In deed, gravity would then bring your watch to lose accuracy by the force it would produce on the watch mechanism.

So if we wanted to gain accuracy, we needed to find a way to counter-balance the effects of gravity in the mechanism. So his idea was to place the escapement and the balance-spring in a sort of circled-cage. the entire piece would rotate a full 360 degrees and its complete revolution would take generally a minute. This would then fight back the gravity influence and modern tourbillon was set up!

Today, several brands proposes amazing tourbillons, all made possible thanks to the legacy of  the above story. Accuracy in Swiss watchmaking is by definition one of the foundations of everything. Isn’t it why do we need a time keeper?
