2015 incoming Fragrance launches

2015 incoming Fragrance launches

The Fragrance industry is ending up another year and before the new year starts, let’s have a focus on the ongoing business of fragrances and specially the new incoming launches for next year. The fragrance industry is looking for a new development model, 2013 – 2020 Since 2000, the fragrance industry has overall a 3% growth year by year. While in 2013 the sales reached $45 billion globally (source: euromonitor) 2014 was a year in which several trends revealed the need for a new business model. Facing a tremendous number of launches, fragrance customers saw a certain lack of creativity that made a lot of fragrances look like “me-toos” rather of being original creations. Several brands are extending existing franchises rather than creating new ones and some of these brands, lucky enough to have iconic and classic fragrances in their portfolios, decided to capitalize on it. This situation is not…

Valeur Absolue, More than a Perfume.

Valeur Absolue, More than a Perfume.

Every month, you can discover a new Brand here at Luxuryactivist.com.  This month we met the owner of an amazing brand called Valeur Absolue. It was launched just now and has already a brilliant future ahead.   What is Valeur Absolue? The concept of the brand Valeur Absolue is a Swiss beauty brand with the originality of blending what nature and science have at its best to serve one and unique purpose: make women feel good and happy. Life is hard, so you should “do-you-some-good”. Basically, the birth of this brand came on the analysis that we have less and less things or situations that could make us happy. Everything tends to be a little “black”. Women face everyday a complex situation in which they need to accomplish several tasks under several roles. Of course we do not speak anymore about the “Power-woman” of the 80’s but more a “multi-facetted woman”…

Fragrances: do not wear them… eat them!

Fragrances: do not wear them… eat them!

Did you know that some fragrances can be eaten? Well, this is not so new as already in the Ancient Egypt, some fragranced preparations could be used externally (on skin and hair) but also drunk (like a plant and spicy infusion). In Europe, in the 18th century and even before, the Vinaigre de Toilette, was also used in both ways. In a more contenporary context the Fragrance industry has been using Diéthylphtalate  in order to denaturate the alcohol so that people would not drink it. But since the 90’s 2 keywords were used and that generated new Fragrance trends: Well-being and Food-supplements. Both together created a new generation of food but also a new generation of fragrances… From the moisturizing anti-radicals yoghourt towards the Fragrance and the Deodorant you eat, a full range of new products started being launched. We call it alicaments, or alismetics, they are basic food, like water,…

Versace Eros… please don’t!

Versace Eros… please don’t!

Versace Profumi launches Versace Eros, a new fragrance for men. Although we are used to a certain baroque style from the italian brand, here the only thing we could say is: hopeless. It is typically the symbol of how bad the fragrance industry is right now. In 1996, Versace launched The Dreamer, it made its entry into the fragrance industry with respect. In deed all the Versace universe was on it. Great name and great fragrance. We all have in mind this specific juniper and tobacco note. Since then, many fragrances were launched  but a few remained. What Roberto Cavalli and Dolce Gabbana are successfully building in time, Versace is loosing it. As if since the death of the creator in 1997, it is a deadly fragrance path to no where.   With 500 new launches every year, the Fragrance industry is suffering as the more we do… the less…

Angel by Thierry Mugler, happy 20th anniversary!

Angel by Thierry Mugler, happy 20th anniversary!

The fragrance Angel by Thierry Mugler is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. From 1992 (its launch) and 2012, it was a real adventure, going from an extravagant dream towards the establishment of a market leader. Let’s celebrate! Everybody is waiting to know what surprises the brand with the star is preparing. In the meantime, follow this timeline. The Fragrance industry is by far one of the most dynamic segments of the luxury business. Each year, we identify more than 300 new fragrance launches in the world. After a period of 10 years, only 1 or 2 are still around. What makes the difference between a true creation that becomes timeless and a failure ? Probably the courage, the originality and the “convictions” a creator will place on it. And Angel by Thierry Mugler definitely  is part of these fragrances that changed the way perfumers were creating fragrances. There was…

Finally the Fragrance industry has its bible…

Finally the Fragrance industry has its bible…

In november a new book about Perfumery will be launched. But this time, it will be a master reference. I remember when I was studying at the Fragrance Institute in France, that there was no books. In deed, there were no reference books like we have in many other disciplines. I always wondered why so? Several people, perfumers and consultants mostly, wrote several books about or around the Fragrance industry. But none are considered as references, in the way I would see a school book. But things might change hopefully. When I was at school, I had a brilliant teacher for Perfumery history. Her name is Elisabeth De Feydeau and I must say she is one of the most passionate person I know in this industry. She spent all her PHD time in the perfumery archives in Paris and in the south of France. She knows more about the creation…
