The return of the Gentleman by Givenchy

The return of the Gentleman by Givenchy

In 1974, Givenchy declared that men were Gentlemen. It was the launch of its fragrance Givenchy Gentleman. With this Fragrance, Givenchy settled the modern man, as elegant as charismatic. It was also one of the first times a luxury brand would dare to add a bit of humour on its advertising. The fragrance itself, it was a beautiful rich woody fragrance with notes of Vetiver and Patchouli. It is one of the most elegant fragrances for men and one of the best Patchouli too. 39 years later, the Gentleman is back with a new fragrance called Gentlemen Only. In this new opus, we see our gentleman again offering his umbrella to a very beautiful lady but the context is a little different. What is interesting is that we see who is the man. In the 1987 advertising we only see a woman and the man’s arm. This time, it is…

New Balenciaga Flora Botanica – disappointing

New Balenciaga Flora Botanica – disappointing

It is true that we cannot succeed everything, and with the launch of the new fragrance by Balenciaga – Flora Botanica – it is precisely the case. Basically we cannot understand why such a launch. Is Coty Inc, the owners of the Balenciaga fragrance license putting pressure on Balenciaga ? Or is it just “Ok, we got it wrong”. As we can see the new “egerie” is Kristen Stewart. And here already troubles start. Why her? She is the typical “non-active” girl, sulky and without too much energy. Finally the perfect victim of vampires :-). I am a little hard here, sorry. But essentially she is a cliché and that is what I criticize the most Balenciaga’s choice. After a magnificent Charlotte Gainsbourg, completely out of the mainstreams, they just go 360 degrees on the cliché-girl. The name now. FLORABOTANICA. Probably they tried to stick to a certain heritage and…

Jelmoli, luxury department store in Zurich

Jelmoli, luxury department store in Zurich

Jelmoli is a luxury Department store in Zurich, Switzerland and probably one of the oldest in the world. Their Claim: The house of Brands. During the Sisley event last week for the launch of their new flagship counter at Jelmoli, I was happy to get back one more time to this nice Department store. In Switzerland is by far the most upscaled Big Department store. Manor, Globus and Bon Genie are far behind. The Store itself is a true piece of Swiss history. The original store was founded in 1833 by Johann Peter Jelmoli Ciolina. At that time it was a fashion shop placed in the Schipfe, Zurich’s oldest continually inhabited district, on the Limmat River. Jelmoli was really a pioneer in terms of store because if we compare with other world famous Department stores (in terms of foundation dates): Le Bon Marche: 1838 Harrod’s: 1849 Bloomingdale’s: 1860 Printemps: 1865…

Finally the Fragrance industry has its bible…

Finally the Fragrance industry has its bible…

In november a new book about Perfumery will be launched. But this time, it will be a master reference. I remember when I was studying at the Fragrance Institute in France, that there was no books. In deed, there were no reference books like we have in many other disciplines. I always wondered why so? Several people, perfumers and consultants mostly, wrote several books about or around the Fragrance industry. But none are considered as references, in the way I would see a school book. But things might change hopefully. When I was at school, I had a brilliant teacher for Perfumery history. Her name is Elisabeth De Feydeau and I must say she is one of the most passionate person I know in this industry. She spent all her PHD time in the perfumery archives in Paris and in the south of France. She knows more about the creation…

Sisley Eau d’Ikar, new fragrance for men

Sisley Eau d’Ikar, new fragrance for men

Hi, I got an invitation from Ms Sonja Glavas, Marketing and PR manager for Sisley Cosmetics for the presentation of their new fragrance for Men: Eau d’Ikar. You can see my first article about it here. Thanks to this appointment, I could get deeper into the understanding of the concept, the flacon and the fragrance itself. Eau d’Ikar gets its inspiration on the myth of Icarus. In greek mythology, the main story told about Icarus is his attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax. He ignored instructions not to fly too close to the sun, and the melting wax caused him to fall from the sky. For Sisley, Ikar is a name that represents a poetic intention. The deep desire of men to fly. Not to challenge the sky but to take off of the land, gain lightness and an intense feeling of…
