Friday Chronicle # 32: Eight Fragrances Considered As True “UFOs” In Terms Of Creativity Worth Knowing.

The history of perfumery saw millions of fragrances launches. In the past 15 years, there has been between 400 and 1000 fragrances launched every year. Out of all these launches probably only one or two would still be around after 5 years. Some fragrances are commercial hits not made to last, others became market leaders and a few were literally creative UFOs. These outstanding fragrances came out from unique creative universes and met their audiences across the years and for some, even decades. They are truly inspiring and became olfactory references to the market. Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent – 1981 When Mr Yves Saint Laurent went to Greece, he was fascinated by the majestic beauty of the landscape and impressed by the elegant masculinity of greek men statues. “I had been fascinated by the blue of the sea, the sky, the intense freshness which emanated from this universe dedicated…

Versace Eros… please don’t!

Versace Eros… please don’t!

Versace Profumi launches Versace Eros, a new fragrance for men. Although we are used to a certain baroque style from the italian brand, here the only thing we could say is: hopeless. It is typically the symbol of how bad the fragrance industry is right now. In 1996, Versace launched The Dreamer, it made its entry into the fragrance industry with respect. In deed all the Versace universe was on it. Great name and great fragrance. We all have in mind this specific juniper and tobacco note. Since then, many fragrances were launched  but a few remained. What Roberto Cavalli and Dolce Gabbana are successfully building in time, Versace is loosing it. As if since the death of the creator in 1997, it is a deadly fragrance path to no where.   With 500 new launches every year, the Fragrance industry is suffering as the more we do… the less…

In deed, many luxury brands become more than simple brands. They turn into true cultural references. In some cases, it is just happening in this way, in others there is a true strategy behind. And here are some highlights. While museums have a hard time to survive, Brands flagship stores or other brand activities have never been better. While the Great Wall of China has 10 million visitors every year,…
