Luc Berriet works for the past 10 years for Firmenich, one of the leading worldwide Fragrance houses. As Fine Fragrance Development Director his role, as he describes it himself, is a sort of a “olfactory coach” with the Perfumers. At the beginning, he has all the Perfumer’s team to manage and, if everything goes well, one champion remains at the end of the project with whom the project is finalized. As a coach, Luc Berriet is present to stimulate, advice, guide and protect the Perfumers. Pleats Please by Issey Miyake, happy one.

Issey Miyake launched Pleats Please, a new fragrance for women by the iconic japanese designer. And this time, the elegant minimalistic low profile of the brand gave place to an outstanding colorful project… all wrapped in a 2.0 approach. Every decade in the Perfumery industry brought a new way of creating fragrances. The 90’s was the era of Back to basics, to an idea of “essentiality”. After the crowded over-rated sexy fragrances of the 80’s dominated often by American Brands and French, a new start came. This essentiality, often based on a minimalistic approach, started with a fragrance called L’Eau d’Issey in 1992. For the first time, elegance and femininity were treated into its essential form. L’Eau d’Issey marked Perfumery history and also gave the tone to Issey Miyake’s perfumery signature. Since then, the Brand has capitalized in the concept of essentiality, texture and materials, which basically also defines well…

Manifesto, success or not?

Manifesto, success or not?

Yves Saint Laurent Parfums is launching a new fragrance for women called Manifesto. We are not sure to understand everything. After the arrival (or should I say the return) of Hedi Slimane to Yves Saint Laurent, this is the second time we hear about the Brand. For the launch of its new fragrance for women, Manifesto claims a certain spirit of self-confidence, freedom and creativity. The concept itself is not new and at Saint Laurent we would probably prefer the total freedom of the Opium woman. What is original here is the game between art, color and femininity. There is also an interesting connection between make up and Fragrance, which was already the case with ELLE. In the advertising we can see the American actress Jessica Chastain. We all remember her from her roles in the Tree of Life (Ms O’Brian) and in some TV shows like ER or Veronica Mars….

La Vie est belle by Lancôme, nothing to report…

La Vie est belle by Lancôme, nothing to report…

I will not speak about the Lancôme new fragrance called La Vie est Belle by Lancôme.  The french brand is desperately looking for the next big hit after Trésor (1990). After Poême (1995), Miracle (2000), Attraction (2003), Hypnose (2005) and Magnifique (2008), now they are launching La Vie est belle (2012). I am not sure we will remember this one as probably we do not remember most of the ones in my above list.  By using Julia Roberts, they probably also expect to please the Tresor client (40 years and more) because I am not sure young women would remember her. The “Pretty woman” generation got old. Then what stroke me was some similitudes to Givenchy Ange ou Demon movie. Of course the Lancôme one is more politically correct but I found some interesting parallels with the dress, the decoration, some characters, scenario and camera moves. It is like if…

Celebrity fragrances, how much?

Celebrity fragrances, how much?

While in Europe we tend to think that Celebrity fragrances are not really a good business, you can ask the american industry. They have made millions of dollars with this new segment. Here some figures. The first ever celebrity fragrance to be a big hit was White Diamonds by Elisabeth Taylor with Elisabeth Arden group since 1991. Lately we got Glow by Jennifer Lopez in 2002. Only the first year it generated 60 million dollars of sales and still today it is on the top 10 most sold celebrity fragrances. And since then, many others tried some of them being a success for a long time. So here is the 2011 ranking of celebrity fragrances made by Forbes magazine: #1 White Diamonds by Elisabeth Taylor – 1991 54 million $ #2  Driven by Derek Jeter – 2010 27 million $ #3 Heat by Beyonce – 2010 21 million $ #4…

Dolce & Gabbana new fragrance video.

Dolce & Gabbana new fragrance video.

Dolce & Gabbana is launching via social media a new video to promote their men and women’s original fragrances. It was filmed in Sicily in the village of Erice and on beach of La Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro by Peruvian photographer Mario Testino. The 45-second video stars Laetitia Casta and her love interest played by American model and actor Noah Mills. It is set to “Città Vuota” by Mina. The overal ambiance displays a good mix between tradition and modernity and we can feel the scents of both fragrances in this movie.   Here the official advertising campaigns. I think Dolce & Gabbana is probably the sexiest fragrance brand in the industry. They really succeeded to build on the italian sex-appeal-way-of-life. :-). Connect to the official website to see more about it: http://www.dolcegabbana.com It is the Dolce Vitta, in a kind of “censured director’s cut”. Like it! LA   info sourced at…

New Balenciaga Flora Botanica – disappointing

New Balenciaga Flora Botanica – disappointing

It is true that we cannot succeed everything, and with the launch of the new fragrance by Balenciaga – Flora Botanica – it is precisely the case. Basically we cannot understand why such a launch. Is Coty Inc, the owners of the Balenciaga fragrance license putting pressure on Balenciaga ? Or is it just “Ok, we got it wrong”. As we can see the new “egerie” is Kristen Stewart. And here already troubles start. Why her? She is the typical “non-active” girl, sulky and without too much energy. Finally the perfect victim of vampires :-). I am a little hard here, sorry. But essentially she is a cliché and that is what I criticize the most Balenciaga’s choice. After a magnificent Charlotte Gainsbourg, completely out of the mainstreams, they just go 360 degrees on the cliché-girl. The name now. FLORABOTANICA. Probably they tried to stick to a certain heritage and…
