Your watch hands are the time eyes…

Your watch hands are the time eyes…

Switzerland has probably the most refined and sophisticated watch-making industry of the world. For centuries, Swiss brands reinvented time, or at least the way we can read time. but one thing many watches have in common, it is their “hands”, basically the little long, thin elements that allow you to measure the hours, minutes and often seconds directly on the dial of your watch. French called then needles “Aiguilles” because of their shape. Italians call them lancette, Portuguese will say Ponteiros or German will call them uhrzeiger. In english we say hands. What is the hand of a watch? A Watch hands are indicators, usually made of a thin, light piece of metal, very variable in form, which moves over a graduated dial or scale. Watches usually have three hands showing the hours, minutes and seconds. The earliest watches had only an hour-hand. The English horologist Daniel Quare is believed to have introduced the minute-hand about 1691, though it did not come into general use until the early 18th century. The body…

When Swatch lost its “head”… bad advertising.

When Swatch lost its “head”… bad advertising.

Swatch is probably one of the most amazing success stories of the all watch-making history. Not only they saved a lot of jobs during the 1980’s crisis in Switzerland but they showed an incredible level of innovation in terms of design. It is an amazing marketing company with loads of clever people who can produce many concepts that become watches afterwards. This time the marketing teams of Swatch went too far, according to the Paris city administration. This is the story of a tremendous fail. Partnership with the Automobile club de France, a good idea? The Automobile club de France is a very prestigious institution in France. It is a men-exclusive club founded in November 12 1895. The members of the Automobile Club of France enjoy several lounges, a swimming-pool, a gym, a library containing more than 45,000 references, a movie theater, bars, and dining-rooms. Numerous activities are offered, among which…

Hermès Dressage L’Heure Masquée, singularity and innovation

Hermès Dressage L’Heure Masquée, singularity and innovation

Hermès reveiled a new amazing timepiece in their theme Le Temps de l’Imaginaire.. It is called Dressage L’Heure Masquée, hidden hour in French. And again, it is purely poetry. Here time is translated into an imaginary and poetic approach. Almost philosophical. Hermes pushes the interaction between the watch and the owner of the watch. The person can play with his timepiece and create a special relationship. In 2011, Hermes won the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie Geneve with Le Temps Suspendu. The concept was that the watch owner could stop the time whenever he wanted. With this new launch, it is the opposite, the mirror complication. It is also the idea of “time on demand”. Hermès already surprised us last year with the amazing Arceau, Le temps suspendu. This time, Hermes, as a magician of time, will help you picking up your chosen moments. How? By hidding from you the part…

Why Switzerland is afraid of Apple?

Why Switzerland is afraid of Apple?

What if every watch user would change its Baume et Mercier, its Tissot, Swatch, Breitling and even its Rolex for a iWatch? Sounds crazy right? But think how good your mom is with her iPad, or how great grandaddy is with the GPS and even how your young brother does not bother anymore having a watch as he can see the time on his iPod touch? Scary. Well the future is already here and the only thing that the connected watches market is waiting for is a true watch and not a geeky plastic gadget with a usb on it. And apparently Apple is willing to supply it. By willing to have a Swiss Made electronic watch, Apple points the arrow of success directly straight to the heart of Switzerland chasse-gardée. If the Californian company would have search for a taiwan-made watch, probably it would be just another gadget. By…

Breva Genie 01 is the first mechanical watch with altimeter and barometer

Breva Genie 01 is the first mechanical watch with altimeter and barometer

The Breva Génie 01 is the world’s first wristwatch with time, altimeter, barometer and power reserve indications provided by a fully mechanical movement, much of which is on display through the open dial and display back. A weekend on Lake Como in Northern Italy provided to Vincent Dupontreué (ex Ermenegildo Zegna manager) the inspiration for the name and the idea of creating a mechanical timepiece that forecast the weather. The name ‘Breva’ is inspired by ‘La Breva’, a warm southern wind that contributes to the agreeably mild microclimate around Lake Como. The movement has been developed after 3 years of research and development by Jean-François Mojon/Chronode, exclusively for Breva. How works this Breva Genie 01 ? The barometer and altimeter (air pressure changes with both altitude and weather conditions) measure air pressure with two small aneroid capsules made from a special non-magnetic memory-metal and stacked one above the other. The top one being clearly visible on…

Electronic watches, not that new

Electronic watches, not that new

Since the launch of the smartphone, we knew that one day we would end up with “smart-watches”. Not that we were all nostalgics of Michael Knight and his Knight industries 2000 wrist-watch but because it would be the natural evolution of things. Despite the fact that iWatches are a hot trend right now, their concept is not new. The Electronic watch, a concept older than 50 years Everybody is talking about the Apple iWatch (even if nobody knows exactly when this will be launched) and the Samsung Galaxy Gear (already launched). But did you know that the idea of a watch capable of doing certain electronic functionalities and powered with a battery is pretty much old? The pioneer was not a Japanese company. It was Hamilton that in 1957 launched the Hamilton Electric watch 500. The uniqueness of this wrist-watch was that a small electric battery replaced the mainspring. The…

Cartier and the Art of über-Perfection

Cartier and the Art of über-Perfection

Last month, LuxuryActivist was at SIHH in Geneva. It is the international Haute-Horlogerie show for professionals. It is organized by The Richemont Group. All Brands from Roger Dubuis, Montblanc, Baume & Mercier, Jaeger Le-Coultre or Cartier were of course present. They all revealed amazing creations and some of them will probably be the highlights of this year. We were quite impressed by Cartier’s philosophy of bringing small details into superlatives. It means, that every single detail was taken care of in the most truly and prestigious way. The luxury Watchmaking industry concentrates the most amazing companies in the world. Precision is not only a matter of “giving the time”. It is also a matter of purpose, of bringing an idea to the perfect execution. In deed, Christmas is still not far away and we can already keep dreaming of amazing creations by Cartier, Piaget, Montblanc or Roger Dubuis among others. Here are some highlights of what you will be able to discover next week.   CARTIER – Tank MC Skeleton Pink Gold Some Brands play the Skeleton concept in showing as much as they can the mouvement inside. This exercise is basically using a almost non-existing dial with a transparent back. In the case of Cartier, the entire 9611 mouvement was developed on this purpose. The Bridges were made in the shape of Roman numbers, so it serves the purpose of the dial. The result is a magnificent aspect of technicity and design.  For the 2014 SIHH, Cartier will reveal a new rework of the Tank MC Skeleton. This time the entire timepiece…
