Designing a functional kitchen that feels like home

0
Reading Time: 4 minutes

Are you tired of your current kitchen? Or do you always get frustrated while cooking because your kitchen is not functional enough? A nice-looking and functional kitchen can improve your cooking experience a lot. But you should know, designing a functional kitchen is a blend of art and science.

The kitchen is often the heart of a home, where families gather, meals are prepared, and memories are made. To create a space that is both efficient and enjoyable, several fundamental principles must be considered. Adding decorative elements like posters can also enhance the ambiance of your kitchen.

Choosing the right layout

The layout of your kitchen significantly impacts its functionality. Common layouts include U-shaped, L-shaped, and galley kitchens. Each has its advantages and is suited to different spaces and needs.

A U-shaped kitchen, for example, offers plenty of counter space and storage. It’s ideal for larger kitchens and those who enjoy cooking elaborate meals. In contrast, an L-shaped layout is perfect for smaller spaces, providing a good balance between work areas and storage. Galley kitchens, characterized by two parallel countertops, are efficient for small spaces and offer a streamlined workflow.

When choosing a layout, consider the “kitchen triangle” – the optimal arrangement of the sink, stove, and refrigerator. This concept aims to minimize the distance between these key areas, enhancing efficiency and reducing unnecessary movement.

Selecting appliances and fixtures

Choosing the right appliances and fixtures is crucial for a functional kitchen. Essential appliances include a refrigerator, stove, oven, and dishwasher. However, the selection goes beyond these basics.

Energy efficiency should be a top priority. Energy Star-rated appliances, for instance, can reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills. Additionally, consider the size and capacity of appliances. A large family might need a bigger refrigerator or a double oven, while a single person or couple might opt for smaller, more compact options.

Maximizing storage solutions

Effective storage solutions are essential for keeping a kitchen organized and clutter-free. Cabinets, drawers, and shelves are the primary storage components, but innovative solutions can further enhance functionality.

Consider pull-out shelves and lazy Susans for easily accessible storage. Deep drawers can store pots and pans, while vertical dividers can organize baking sheets and cutting boards. Overhead cabinets can maximize vertical space, and under-cabinet lighting can improve visibility.

Adding personal touches to your kitchen

Functionality is not everything, you need to be comfortable being in your kitchen as well. While functionality is paramount, personal touches make a kitchen truly yours. The kitchen should reflect your style and personality, creating a space where you feel comfortable and inspired.

Color schemes and decorative elements

Color schemes set the tone for your kitchen. Neutral colors like white, gray, and beige create a clean, timeless look. Bold colors, such as navy blue or emerald green, can add a dramatic flair. Consider using a mix of colors for cabinets, walls, and backsplashes to create visual interest.

Decorative elements, such as artwork, plants, and textiles, add warmth and personality. A piece of art or a collection of framed photos can serve as a focal point. Plants not only enhance the aesthetic but also improve air quality. Textiles, like rugs and curtains, add texture and comfort.

Unique posters and personal artifacts

Unique posters and personal artifacts can make your kitchen stand out. Posters with vintage food advertisements, inspirational quotes, or your favorite recipes can add character. Personal artifacts, such as family heirlooms or travel souvenirs, create a sense of history and connection. Make sure to design your kitchen the way you want it, to enjoy the best and most satisfying cooking experience.

Flatter Your Figure: Style Secrets for Every Body Type

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Every person’s body is unique, and understanding your body type is the first step towards fashion that not only fits but flatters. This guide will help you identify your shape and suggest styles that will elevate your wardrobe, ensuring you look polished and confident every day.

Knowing Your Body Shape

The first step in dressing well is identifying your body type. Typically, body shapes are categorised into four main types: pear, apple, rectangle, and hourglass. Here’s a quick primer on the four main body shapes:

  • Pear: Wider hips than shoulders and a well-defined waist.
  • Apple: Broad shoulders, less defined waist, and slimmer legs.
  • Rectangle: Uniform width from shoulders to hips, often with a less-defined waist.
  • Hourglass: Equally balanced shoulders and hips with a distinct waist.

Tailored Tips for Each Body Type

Pear Shape

If you have a pear-shaped body, the goal is to balance your proportions by accentuating the upper body while streamlining the lower.

  • Choose A-line skirts and dresses that gently skim the waist, creating a balanced look.
  • Tops with embellishment or interesting necklines such as boat necks or square cuts can emphasise your shoulders and bust.

Apple shape

The trick to styling apple-shaped bodies is to elongate and draw attention away from the waist.

  • Opt for V-neck ops to draw the eye vertically to create the illusion of length.
  • Structured dresses like shift or empire-line dresses do not cling to the waists and instead skim them.
Source: https://www.24s.com

Rectangle shape

With a rectangle body shape, you’ll want to create curves where they are subdued.

  • Wear belts at the narrowest part of your waist to define your waist.
  • Choose wrap dresses that offer a naturally flattering shape.
  • Wearing peplum tops can also add volume and definition to your waist.
souce: https://www.24s.com

Hourglass shape

Celebrate your curves by choosing clothes that highlight your waist.

  • Wear fitted pieces like rap dresses and high-waisted pants that follow your natural silhouette.
  • Wear accessories like belts.
Source: https://www.24s.com

Mixing and Matching with Luxury Brands

When adding luxury pieces to your wardrobe, you should consider how a brand’s signature style complements your body type. For example, Celine’s classic tailoring is perfect for hourglass figures, emphasising a cinched waist and structured silhouette. Brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton also offer beautifully cut pieces that can flatter any body type with their timeless appeal.

Fabric and Fit Matter

Choosing the right fabric and fit is essential, regardless of your body type. Luxurious, flowing fabrics like silk and fine cotton drape beautifully and can flatter any body shape by providing a smooth silhouette.

Conversely, stiffer fabrics such as wool can help structure and define your shape. You should always opt for clothing that fits perfectly—too tight can accentuate unwanted areas, while too loose might not highlight your best features.

Adapting Seasonal Trends to Fit Your Body Shape

Fashion trends can be fleeting, and not all of them suit every body type straight off the runway. However, you can adapt the latest trends to work for your figure with a few styling tricks, ensuring you stay stylish and confident throughout the seasons.

  • Layering is key. Layering pieces can be customised for any body type. For example, a waterfall cardigan drapes loosely around the midsection, making it perfect for an apple-shaped body. For pear shapes, a cropped jacket can help balance your proportions by drawing the eye upward.
  • Play with patterns. Patterns can drastically affect how clothing looks on different body types. Vertical stripes can elongate the body, which is perfect for apple and rectangle shapes looking to add height. Hourglass figures can opt for patterns that align with your curves, like diagonal stripes that follow the natural lines of the body.
Source: https://www.24s.com
  • Incorporate texture. Texture can add depth to an outfit and flatter your shape. If you have a rectangle body shape, you can consider chunky knits that add volume and create the illusion of curves. On the other hand, if you have an hourglass figure, smoother textures that hug the body will highlight your natural curves without adding bulk.
  • Choose trendy accessories. Accessories are a great way to incorporate trends that can still flatter your body type. Belt bags, for example, can highlight a slim waist on an hourbridge figure or add a point of interest to a pear-shaped outfit.

Dress to Feel Confident Regardless of Body Shape

Dressing for your body type isn’t just about following rules—it’s about playing to your strengths and embracing what you feel best in. Luxury fashion isn’t merely a purchase; it’s an investment in your confidence and the way you present yourself to the world. So, empower yourself, wear what flatters you the most, and feel confident no matter the weather.

(En Français ici)
Picture this: a convertible cruising down the coastline, a cooler packed with ice-cold refreshments, and a leopard-print swimsuit making a bold statement under the sun. Even if the skies are overcast and rain threatens to dampen spirits, the Beach Ball paddle tournament in Boulogne-sur-Mer goes undeterred. Amidst the clatter of paddles and the laughter of spectators, one sound rises above the rest—the unmistakable, funky beat of this summer’s anthem. This is Beach Ball by SEUMER BOYS.

The Soundtrack of the Summer

There’s something undeniably magical about a summer hit. It’s the lifeblood of beach parties, road trips, and lazy afternoons by the pool. This year’s track, composed by Peyman and Lolo, encapsulates that very essence. With its catchy and groovy beats, it promises to be the earworm that will have you whistling and humming from Saint-Tropez to Dunkirk. The song, recorded at 3AXES Studio and expertly mixed by Delmore, takes the listener on a sonic journey, soothing their ears with every beat.

But this is more than just a song; it’s a mood, a vibe, a statement. Mastering done by Mick Morrisson at the legendary Abbey Road Studio ensures that every note and rhythm is perfectly tuned to make you move. As soon as it starts, you can feel the infectious energy that makes you want to shout, “C’est parti! Fuck le seum!”

Semer-Boys-beach-ball-hit-2024

Embracing Creativity in Music – Beach Ball by Seumer Boys.

The beauty of this track lies not just in its rhythm but in its innovative approach to the summer song theme. Summer songs are integral to the seasonal tapestry, providing the soundtrack to countless memories. They can transport us, evoke nostalgia, and create a sense of collective euphoria. This particular song pushes the boundaries of what a summer anthem can be, blending traditional funky grooves with a modern twist that feels fresh and exciting.

Peyman and Lolo, the creative forces behind the composition, have captured the quintessential summer vibe while infusing it with their unique artistic vision. The song’s catchy hooks and groovy beats are complemented by lyrics that resonate with summer’s carefree and rebellious spirit. It’s a celebration of life, fun, and the refusal to let anything—be it rain or a bad mood—ruin the season’s joy.

Decoding “Seum”

One of the standout features of the song is its defiant refrain, “Fuck le seum!” To fully appreciate this, it’s essential to understand the term “seum.” Widely used among French youth, “seum” is derived from the Arabic word “sèmm,” meaning venom or poison. In the context of French slang, it has come to signify a state of frustration, annoyance, or general bad vibes. By boldly declaring “Fuck le seum,” the song encapsulates a rejection of negativity and a wholehearted embrace of the positive, carefree spirit that summer embodies.

This phrase becomes a rallying cry, an invitation to shed worries and embrace the moment. It’s about living in the now, savouring every second of the sunshine, the music, and the camaraderie that defines the summer experience.

Conclusion: The Anthem of Freedom

This summer track emerges as a beacon of lightness and joy in a world that often feels weighed down by worries and stress. It reminds us that music has the power to uplift, unite, and transform ordinary moments into extraordinary memories. From its funky beats to its spirited lyrics, this song is poised to become the defining sound of the season. You can listen to this hit on one of the following platforms:

However, to support her education, she began modelling, a decision that would soon change the trajectory of her life. Her striking beauty and poise quickly caught the attention of fashion scouts, leading her to abandon her law studies in favour of a full-time modelling career.

By the late 1980s, Bellucci had moved to Milan, Italy’s fashion capital, where she signed with Elite Model Management. Her work with renowned designers and brands, such as Dolce & Gabbana and Dior, brought her international recognition. Yet, despite her success in modelling, Bellucci felt a more profound calling. “Modeling was a fantastic opportunity, but I always knew I wanted to act. There was a different kind of storytelling in cinema that I was eager to explore,” she told Vanity Fair.

Bellucci’s transition to acting was seamless. Her early roles in Italian cinema showcased her natural talent and magnetic screen presence. Her breakout role came in 1996 with “L’Appartement,” a French film directed by Gilles Mimouni. Her performance as Lisa earned her critical acclaim and the César Award nomination for Most Promising Actress. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Bellucci said in an interview with Vogue, “That role was a turning point for me. It was the moment I realized that acting was my true passion.”

From there, her career trajectory soared. In 2000, she starred in Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Malèna,” a film that cemented her status as a leading actress. In “Malèna,” Bellucci portrayed a war widow whose beauty became a curse and a source of strength in a small Sicilian town during World War II. Her nuanced performance garnered widespread praise and showcased her ability to bring depth and complexity to her characters.

Monica Bellucci’s early years and rise to fame testify to her resilience and adaptability. Bellucci’s journey is an inspiring story of following one’s passion and seizing opportunities, from a small-town girl with dreams of becoming a lawyer to an internationally acclaimed actress. As we explore her illustrious career, we see how a profound dedication to her craft has guided each step and each decision.

Monica Bellucci and her career highlights

Monica Bellucci’s filmography is a testament to her versatility and willingness to embrace various roles. Her journey through cinema has been marked by significant performances that have left an indelible mark on European and American film industries. Here, we explore some of the pivotal highlights of her illustrious career.

“Malèna” (2000)

One of Bellucci’s most defining roles, “Malèna,” directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, tells the poignant story of a beautiful woman in a small Sicilian town during World War II. Bellucci’s portrayal of Malèna, a war widow who becomes the object of desire and scorn in her village, was a tour de force. Her performance captured the vulnerability and strength of a woman subjected to the harsh judgments of society. “Malèna was a character that resonated deeply with me,” Bellucci said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “She embodied the struggle of many women judged solely on their appearance, and I wanted to bring that internal battle to life on screen.”

Her nuanced performance brought a rare depth to the character, earning her critical acclaim and solidifying her status as a leading actress in European cinema. The film’s success showcased Bellucci’s ability to convey complex emotions and highlighted her skill in bringing multidimensional characters to life.

“The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” (2003)

In 2003, Bellucci joined the cast of the Wachowskis’ groundbreaking sci-fi franchise with her role as Persephone in “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions.” As Persephone, the enigmatic and seductive wife of the Merovingian, Bellucci added a layer of mystery and allure to the films. Her character, though secondary, became iconic due to Bellucci’s magnetic presence and the sensuality she brought to the role.

Bellucci’s input into the character was significant. She worked closely with the Wachowskis to develop Persephone’s backstory and motivations, ensuring that her character, while alluring, was also complex and integral to the storyline. “Working on The Matrix was an incredible experience,” Bellucci recalled in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “The Wachowskis allowed me to explore Persephone’s depth, making her more than just a beautiful face.”

“Irreversible” (2002)

In the controversial French film “Irreversible,” directed by Gaspar Noé, Bellucci took on one of the most challenging roles of her career. The film, known for its brutal and unflinching depiction of violence, featured Bellucci as Alex, a woman who experiences a horrific assault. The film’s narrative, told in reverse chronological order, demanded a powerful, raw performance, which Bellucci delivered with harrowing realism.

Bellucci’s commitment to the role was evident in her portrayal of Alex’s trauma and resilience. She brought an emotional depth that was both disturbing and profoundly moving. “Irreversible was a difficult film to make, but it was important to tell the story with honesty,” Bellucci stated in an interview with The Guardian. “I wanted to honor the experiences of those who have suffered similar traumas by bringing authenticity to Alex’s character.”

“The Passion of the Christ” (2004)

Mel Gibson directed The Passion of the Christ, which featured Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. The film depicted the final hours of Jesus Christ and required Bellucci to convey deep sorrow and compassion. Her performance was marked by a quiet intensity, capturing her character’s profound pain and unwavering faith.

Bellucci approached the role with a deep sense of reverence and responsibility. She spent time researching Mary Magdalene’s historical and biblical significance, aiming to portray her with authenticity and respect. “Playing Mary Magdalene was a humbling experience,” Bellucci told Vanity Fair. “I wanted to honor her legacy and bring a sense of humanity to her story.”

“Spectre” (2015)

In 2015, Bellucci made history by becoming the oldest Bond girl, or as she prefers, “Bond woman,” in the James Bond film “Spectre.” Cast as Lucia Sciarra, the widow of an assassin, Bellucci brought a sophisticated and mature presence to the film. Her role challenged traditional Bond girl stereotypes, emphasizing intelligence and depth over physical allure.

Bellucci’s input into her character was crucial. She worked with director Sam Mendes to ensure Lucia Sciarra was portrayed as a woman of substance and strength. “Lucia is a woman who has lived, who has faced loss and danger. I wanted her to be a fully realized character, not just an accessory,” Bellucci explained in an interview with BBC. Her performance was praised for adding a new dimension to the Bond franchise, proving that allure and complexity can coexist beautifully.

“Les plus belles années d’une vie” (2019)

In 2019, Bellucci starred in Claude Lelouch’s “Les plus belles années d’une vie,” a sequel to the beloved classic “A Man and a Woman.” In this film, she played Elena, adding a new layer to the narrative of love and memory. Bellucci’s performance was characterized by a graceful blend of nostalgia and vitality, fitting seamlessly into Lelouch’s poetic exploration of ageing and romance.

Bellucci’s portrayal of Elena brought an emotional resonance that complemented the film’s themes of rekindled love and reflection on a shared past. “Working with Claude Lelouch was a dream come true,” Bellucci shared in an interview with Variety. “His vision for love and life is so pure, and I wanted to contribute to that vision by bringing warmth and authenticity to Elena’s character.”

“Siccità” (2022)

In the Italian drama “Siccità” (Drought), directed by Paolo Virzì, Bellucci played a pivotal role in a narrative centred around a group of people grappling with the effects of a prolonged drought in Rome. Her character, Marta, was a complex figure dealing with personal and environmental crises, showcasing Bellucci’s ability to tackle contemporary social issues through her craft.

Bellucci’s input was crucial in portraying Marta’s multifaceted struggle, combining personal turmoil with broader societal challenges. “Siccità is a reflection of our times, and it was important for me to portray Marta’s resilience and vulnerability,” Bellucci mentioned in an interview with La Repubblica. Her performance was lauded for its depth and relevance, adding to her repertoire of socially impactful roles.

“Mafia Mamma” (2023)

In the comedy Mafia Mamma, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, Bellucci played Bianca, a fierce and glamorous mafia boss who guides an unsuspecting American woman into the world of organized crime. This film marked a delightful departure from her usual dramatic roles, allowing Bellucci to showcase her comedic timing and versatility.

Bellucci’s portrayal of Bianca was both charismatic and humorous, contributing significantly to the film’s appeal. “Playing Bianca was a fun challenge,” Bellucci told The Hollywood Reporter. “She’s powerful, witty, and has a unique sense of style. It was liberating to explore this lighter, yet still intense, character.” Her performance brought a refreshing twist to the genre, demonstrating her adaptability and wide-ranging talent.

“Beetlejuice” (2024)

Looking ahead, Bellucci is set to appear in the highly anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s cult classic “Beetlejuice.” While details about her role remain under wraps, her involvement in the project has generated significant excitement. Known for her ability to imbue characters with depth and intrigue, Bellucci’s contribution to “Beetlejuice” is eagerly awaited by fans and critics alike.

Reflecting on joining the “Beetlejuice” cast, Bellucci shared her enthusiasm in an interview with Deadline: “Tim Burton’s world is magical and eccentric, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I can’t wait to bring my character to life and join this fantastic ensemble.” Her participation in this iconic franchise underscores her enduring relevance and ability to continually reinvent herself in the ever-evolving landscape of cinema.

Monica Bellucci’s career highlights reveal an actress who is unafraid to take risks, embrace challenging roles, and continuously evolve. Bellucci’s openness about her struggles and triumphs has humanized her, making her more relatable despite her superstar status.

LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL welcomes its 19th olfactory vision: COMÈTE.

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Embarking on the world of fragrances is akin to setting off on a fantastic journey of emotions and personal feelings. It is an exploration where scents serve as powerful witnesses to memories, unlocking one of the most intense forms of nostalgia. They can transport us back to cherished places or reconnect us with people from our past, evoking a vivid tapestry of emotions with each note. This profound connection between fragrance and memory underscores the enchantment inherent in perfumery.

CHANEL is a beacon of luxury and innovation within this olfactory storytelling realm. Its Les Exclusifs de CHANEL collection is an exceptional olfactory line showcasing perfumery’s height. Composed of noble and frequently tailor-made materials, each fragrance within this line serves as a mosaic of Gabrielle Chanel’s essence. They reveal the facets of her character, recount her life’s pages, sketch her iconic designs, or illuminate the symbols that guided her journey. These fragrances do more than capture the essence of the woman and the designer; they weave the narrative of the House itself, embodying a distinct style and temporal elegance that transcends trends. Unbound by age, gender, or the whims of creative cycles, these creations adhere solely to the instinct of CHANEL’s In-House perfumer creator, Olivier Polge, who asserts, “Fragrance at CHANEL is a state of mind. The expression of a style, an idea that goes beyond the aesthetics of a raw material.”

Amidst this storied collection, there emerges a new fragrance, COMÈTE. Part mystery and elegance, part perfection and daring, LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL welcome their 19th olfactory vision: COMÈTE. This addition continues the collection’s legacy, inviting wearers on a journey through the scents themselves and the stories and ethos they represent.

It all started with the vision of Gabrielle Chanel.

Gabrielle-Chanel-vision

Mademoiselle Chanel knew how to recognize a powerful and mysterious aesthetic power in certain forms. The Star and Comet were always her preferred sources of inspiration, enhancing women’s beauty with their celestial dust. Gabrielle Chanel chose the Comet and Star as essential themes of her first high jewellery collection, presented in Paris in 1932, for their incomparable sparkle. She naturally designed jewellery in its shape, such as the Comète necklace, that threads around the neck, resting freely against the skin.

Gabrielle Chanel was convinced of the magical power of the comet, omnipresent in her universe, and made this star one of her symbols of eternal chance and the emblem of her unfailing optimism. Like a trace of light in the night, this singular comet now traces an olfactory trail in its image: rare and unforgettable.

At the beginning of each creation, you need an inspiring element, and for COMÈTE, the starting point was the idea of stardust. The comet is a strong symbol for CHANEL, and I’m thinking in particular of the Comète necklace from the 1932 high jewellery collection, which is worn open, laying right on the skin, and reminds me of the enveloping trail of a skin fragrance.

Olivier Polge – CHANEL in-house Perfumer Creator

COMÈTE: a stardust effect for a fragrance of optimism

Intensely floral and luminous, COMÈTE explores a new olfactory identity in the LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL collection. Rich and powdery, sophisticated and complex, it is a universe in itself.

Like this travelling star, the Eau de Parfum is suffused with a fresh and delicate cherry blossom accord. From the first seconds after spraying the new fragrance, I was hit by a very bright freshness as elegant as modern. The cherry blossom start provides a luminous, almost mouth-watering effect, modernizing the top notes of the olfactory structure. Not long after, the top notes leave the stage to a beautiful duo of heliotrope and iris. The olfactory structure is completed with a modern musk accord that envelops the skin with elusive magnetism and celebrates its singular character. It gives the fragrance a sheer soft energy, a deep floral scent that is not heavy but more like a warm aura surrounding you. This fragrance is unique and provides a new olfactory direction within the Les Exclusifs de CHANEL collection.

COMÈTE is a fragrance trail of stardust and a celestial jewel that, in a reflection of Gabrielle Chanel, chooses its trajectory and never deviates from it. It is an aura of light, unfurling the power of optimism for those convinced that the planets will align with their lucky star.

Considered one of his generation’s most talented perfumers, Olivier Polge took over Jacques Polge as an in-house perfumer in 2015. Since then, his path has been underlined by unique creations that settled Olivier’s mastery as a true reference in the perfumery industry. So far, he has already climbed several Everests, with the successful launches of N°5 L’EAU in 2016, GABRIELLE CHANEL in 2017, LES EAUX DE CHANEL since 2018, BLEU DE CHANEL PARFUM and this year, COMÈTE – LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL – Discover here my notes about a Masterclass delivered by Olivier last time he was in Geneva.

COMÈTE: a fragrance bottle slipped into an iconic case.

Photo: CHANEL

More exclusive and precious than any other collection, LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL is embodied by a bottle of exemplary minimalism, focusing all attention on the fragrance. COMÈTE is housed in iconic streamlined glass with a timeless monogrammed black lid. Elevating simplicity to the rank of sophisticated luxury, its case is an elegant white jewellery-style coffret accentuated with black trim.

This subtle two-tone aesthetic is like a heritage seal, and for the launch of COMÈTE, it is accompanied by a unique limited-edition creation: an embossed representation of the legendary Comète necklace, created in 1932, sensually embraces the four sides of the case. In an ultimate nod to the shine of diamonds and stardust, the double C that tops the case is heightened with silver ink.

COMÈTE is a new star in the constellation of LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL. It is an olfactory gem symbolizing optimism, which celebrates the excellence and unique know-how of CHANEL Perfumer. Do not hesitate to visit the House’s official website for more information:

An Exclusive Masterclass with Olivier Polge, In-house Perfumer Creator at CHANEL

Reading Time: 11 minutes

Geneva, 27th of March 2024 – The day I met with Olivier Polge for an exclusive Masterclass. In an ambience brimming with the timeless elegance of CHANEL, I had the unparalleled opportunity to immerse myself in a world shaped by scents during a masterclass led by none other than Olivier Polge, the esteemed in-house perfumer of CHANEL. This remarkable event took place on March 27th in Geneva, set against the backdrop of a private gathering to celebrate the launch of their new fragrance, Comète, under the prestigious Les Exclusifs de CHANEL collection. Engaging directly with Olivier Polge, a true icon in perfumery, was nothing short of inspiring. His insights into the craft of fragrance creation offered a rare glimpse into the meticulous artistry that defines CHANEL’s olfactory signatures. In this article, I am thrilled to share my notes from this extraordinary encounter—focusing on the most captivating insights and revelations. Join me as we delve into the essence of luxury, creativity, and passion, guided by the masterful Olivier Polge.

Olivier-Polge-CHANEL-Perfumer-Creator
Photo: CHANEL

Olivier Polge is a true talent shaped by creative and artistic values.

Olivier Polge sees his profession as a unique know-how, both artisanal and artistic, an expertise that has been integrated into the CHANEL House since the creation of the N°5 fragrance in 1921. If the past obliges him, he finds it a fascinating lexicon he strives to conjugate with the future. At the head of the CHANEL Laboratory of Fragrance Creation and Development, he ensures the continuity of the fragrances that have become legendary. He imagines the classics of tomorrow, memorable and recognizable scents that are the essence of an era without ever yielding to short-term trends.

“At CHANEL, we work with raw materials like a painter would work with his palette of colors”

one of the keys received by Olivier Polge when he became the fourth nose in the history of the House in 2015.

His predecessor as the in-house perfumer is none other than his father, Jacques Polge, whom he succeeded after a few detours in the History of Art, training as a perfumer in Grasse, and international recognition in his profession, notably at IFF on both sides of the Atlantic.

As a teenager, Olivier Polge discovered the piano and was so dazzled by it that he still plays daily, even if he is now obsessed with different notes. “When, at 20 years old, I started learning the trade, I discovered that music and perfume shared the same language. I was going to have to compose and write formulas made of notes and chords,” he says.

At CHANEL, he has already imagined some fifteen fragrances. He appreciates the diversity of expression between the different fragrance lines and the collections LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL or LES EAUX DE CHANEL. He likes to translate into fragrance the markers of CHANEL’s style — the tension between freedom and constraint, the relative uncertainty separating male and female, and the complexity behind apparent simplicity. He imagined the olfactory portrait of Misia and built a repertoire of “eaux fraîches” for the House’s emblematic locations (PARIS-BIARRITZ, PARIS-VENISE, PARIS-DEAUVILLE, PARIS-RIVIERA as well as PARIS-EDIMBOURG and PARIS-PARIS). For GABRIELLE CHANEL, he conducted a score of white flowers. When working on the House’s iconic fragrance, N°5, and creating a fresh and contemporary version, N°5 L’EAU, Olivier Polge sought continuity in the purity. The world of scents offers him a palette that he refines, transforms and shapes “like a dress”, in accordance with the precepts of Mademoiselle Chanel, until instinct tells him that the perfume is complete. That the material has turned into art.

The Masterclass by Olivier Polge.

At the masterclass held in Geneva for the unveiling of CHANEL’s latest olfactory masterpiece, esteemed art historian Benoît Dauvergne engaged in a compelling dialogue with Olivier Polge, the visionary in-house perfumer of CHANEL, on the nuances of creation within the iconic brand. Central to their discussion was the profound insight that crafting a CHANEL fragrance transcends mere conceptualization; it demands the infusion of genuine significance into the heart of the idea. Polge emphasized that a perfumer must navigate beyond the superficial allure of an initial image or theme, embarking on a quest to imbue his creation with profound depth and purpose.

Olivier Polge noted that the liberty afforded in CHANEL’s creative process does not dilute the idea but enriches each scent’s tapestry with complexity and nuance. Despite the vast expanse of creative freedom, the guiding vision behind each fragrance remains impeccably defined and articulated. This delicate balance of freedom and clarity, as articulated by Olivier Polge, illustrates the meticulous craftsmanship and philosophical rigour that CHANEL imbues in every bottle, making it a beacon of luxury, innovation, and timeless appeal in perfumery.

Three precedent generations of in-house perfumers through the eyes of Olivier Polge.

During this dialogue, Olivier Polge reflected on the House’s amazing heritage, discussing each generation of in-house perfumers and their primary creations. The first nose was, of course, Ernest Beaux. When Gabrielle Chanel met with Ernest Beaux, she knew she had found the right artist to translate her modern ideas of revolution into a fragrance. A lot of myths are told about how CHANEL N°5 was created. However, it is essential to highlight that it was a true revolution at its launch, opening a new era of modernity for the entire fragrance industry.

CHANEL-Ernest-Beaux

Away from a traditional figurative perfumery, CHANEL N°5 introduced what you see in art with Cubism, Dadaïsm and Surrealism. It was a different way to interpret nature. There was an artistic intention. We have a dazzling bouquet boosting the jasmine, the ylang-ylang, and the rose, yet no identifiable note is left to a standard vision of things. Thanks to the aldehydes’ magical alchemy, CHANEL N°5 throw people off the scent, not evoking any one flower, to become “a woman’s fragrance with the woman scent”. Olivier Polge also mentioned a second creation by Ernest Beaux: Bois des Iles. In 1922, the Le Boeuf sur le Toit cabaret opened in Paris, immediately becoming the epicentre of the avant-garde. Those nights of the Roaring Twenties inspired Gabrielle Chanel to create this sensual and spicy fragrance that evokes the beckoning waters of distant lands. Ernest Beaux translated Mademoiselle Chanel’s vision through a masterwork made of New Caledonian sandalwood, ylang-ylang and tonka bean.

The second in-house perfumer was Henri Robert, a true legend in perfumery creation who inspired generations of perfumers worldwide and enchanted many CHANEL fans with his iconic creations. He worked at CHANEL for over 20 years. and created amazing fragrances that also marked CHANEL’s fragrance history. Olivier Polge named a few: N°19, Cristalle and Pour Monsieur. Henri Robert also preserved CHANEL N°5 over the years, ensuring the quality and consistency of such creations would remain throughout the ages. He would always fight for the best qualities of raw materials like Jasmine and never compromise on the quality.

CHANEL-Henri-Robert

His mission was also to launch a new feminine fragrance, but how could he create something outstanding after the House signature fragrance created by his predecessor? Then, CHANEL N°19 was born. Considered a true masterpiece, Henri Robert pursued the mythologie of CHANEL with a new contemporary vision of femininity.

Another exciting fact underlined by Olivier Polge was that Pour Monsieur was the only fragrance for men created while Gabrielle Chanel was still alive. Mademoiselle gave it to men as a true gift and led masculine perfumery for decades.

Last but not least, Olivier Polge spoke about his father, Jacques Polge. It was for sure a very personal moment that highlighted Olivier’s respect for a great creator beyond his family connection. He mentioned one master creation by his father, that is EGOISTE. It was not only Olivier’s fragrance when he was young, but he also mentioned the olfactory connection with Bois des Iles, and we could see almost the circle of CHANEL’s creation. Of course, he also mentioned Allure, among other amazing creations by Jacques Polge.

CHANEL-Jacques-Polge

Oliver Polge is the fourth generation of in-house perfumers. These four creators share a passion for excellence, freedom of creation, and true loyalty to CHANEL’s tremendous unlimited universe. Gabrielle Chanel has inspired and still inspires all creations. She has established all the rules and all the symbols as a true visionary ahead of her time. Gabrielle Chanel’s heritage has never been so relevant today in a world desperately looking for meaningful creations.

Olivier Polge, what makes a CHANEL fragrance?

For several minutes, Olivier tried to explain what was unique about a CHANEL fragrance that would make it immediately recognizable. Olivier started by saying there is no magical formula. Eventually, CHANEL N°5 explains it all: to create a fragrance made from a strong idea, never figurative, always filtered, to fracture nature into something more than the elements. Jasmine seems to be a common denominator but is never used as expected. There is no copy-paste in CHANEL’s creations. On the contrary, there is a lot of freedom. Each fragrance has a different creative process. It all starts with an idea, a symbol inspired by Gabrielle Chanel and her creations, and then, the freedom of creation takes the lead to conclude into a piece of olfactory art.

Jamais l’évidence !”

Never what is obvious! – Says Olivier Polge during the masterclass

When asked about the length of creating a fragrance at CHANEL, Olivier answered that there are no patterns for that. A fragrance is finished when it is finished. Each story requires the right amount of time, and there is no commercial pressure to launch a fragrance under a certain rhythm.

Olivier Polge about his work.

There is a lot of modesty in Olivier Polge’s words and vision. Considered one of his generation’s most talented perfumers, he took over Jacques Polge as an in-house perfumer in 2015. To conclude,

I witnessed an extraordinary narrative—a masterclass with Olivier Polge, the olfactory genius within the House of CHANEL. This encounter was an education and an odyssey through the intimate corridors of creation, heritage, and unparalleled innovation that define CHANEL’s fragrant legacy. Olivier Polge, as the fourth-generation in-house perfumer, shared not just the mechanics but the soul behind CHANEL’s scents, blending tradition with audacious creativity to craft fragrances that defy the obvious and eschew the figurative.

From Olivier’s masterclass, I learned that a CHANEL fragrance begins with a potent idea. This visionary spark is then given form through unrestricted creative freedom without compromising on excellence. The essence of CHANEL lies in its ability to turn material into art, making the invisible unforgettable—a testament to a legacy that is always felt, never seen.

As the session drew to a close, I was left with a profound realization: in the world of CHANEL, fragrances are not just created; they are composed, much like a symphony, with each note playing its part in a larger, mesmerizing story. This masterclass was not just a lesson in perfumery but a gateway to understanding the art of storytelling through scent. As told by Olivier Polge, the narrative of CHANEL is one where every creation is a comet in the vast expanse of the fragrance universe—bright, unique, and trailblazing. Truly, in the realm of CHANEL, the air we breathe is not just scented but storied, leaving us longing for the next chapter in this olfactory tale.
