The famous Parisian luxury goods brand Longchamp has just begun renovations of its historic store on rue Saint-Honoré in Paris, the brand’s hometown. During the renovations, the store will be covered with a tarp decorated with a spectacular work of art by American artist Ryan McGinness. For Longchamp, it’s the perfect opportunity to bring art into the heart of Paris, with an exceptional storefront decorated with a spectacular work of art,«Mindscapes»,by American artist Ryan McGinness! Located on the cornerof two very busy streets just a few dozen metersfrom the Place de la Concorde, this decoration is in place from March this year.

Jean Cassegrain, Longchamp CEO explains that such a renovation in the heart of Paris, requires an outstanding display. By inviting a New Yorker artist, it is a celebration between two cities: Paris and New York. This decoration in the heart of Paris is a very important step for Longchamp. Ryan is from New York and Longchamp from Paris, two cities overflowing with energy and creativity! As symbolized by the horse and rider galloping in the French luxury house logo, Longchamp is in perpetual movement. These words can also be used to describe Ryan’s work and the piece he has created for this site.

Rue Saint-Honoré is where it all started for Longchamp. The company was founded in Paris in 1948 by Jean Cassegrain. The Longchamp House is still owned and managed by the family. The company is primarily known for its leather and canvas handbags, its travel items, and numerous fashion accessories. The brand is present all over the world through more than 290 boutiques and a total of more than 1,500 stores in some hundred countries. Longchamp is distributed in some one hundred countries through a network of around 1,800 retail stores, company-owned boutiques and franchises, department store concessions, multi-brand fine leather goods dealers, airport shops and on-line sales. The group directly manages 236 Longchamp Boutiques through 18 distribution subsidiaries. France represents around one-third of sales. Longchamp is a global and international luxury house. Its know-how, heritage, creativity and the quality of its products, under the sole direction of one family, give it a unique character. Unique in terms of its expertise as well as in its positioning anchored in optimistic luxury.
All of this makes Longchamp a brand in motion and colour.

If we get interested in what is going to change in the store renovation, we know that the retail area will be significantly expanded thanks to these renovations, marking a new phase in the brand development. This partnership, which brings together a contemporary artist and a building classified as a historical monument, clearly highlight how much Longchamp values creativity and artistry. Under the tarp designed by Ryan, the compagnons – French artisans with centuries-old traditions – will restore the building’s eighteenth-century facades. This ability to combine innovation and know-how perfectly captures the spirit of our fashion house.

The artistic direction of the brand is handled by Sophie Delafontaine. Longchamp often turns to designers and artists who propose special versions of their bags and luggage, sometimes sold in limited editions. Thus, in 1971 Serge Mendjisky added leather patchwork to bags. In 2004 Thomas Heatherwick invented the “zip bag,” a bag constructed around a long zipper. In 2004 and 2005 Tracey Emin personalized luggage. Jeremy Scott has regularly proposed special editions of the Pliage bag since 2006. In 2008, to celebrate its sixtieth birthday, Longchamp reissued its LM collection originally only available in Asia,[9] also offering a version illustrated by Jean-Luc Moerman. Kate Moss, the brand’s icon since 2006, also became a bag designer in 2010 with the launch of the first Kate Moss for Longchamp collection. In spring 2012, the brand launched a new all-leather version of its Pliage bag. Since 2006, each season Longchamp has also offered a range of clothing and shoes for women.

longchamp-by-JeremyScott

Longchamp’s tradition of excellence began over 65 years ago, in the wake of the Second World War. American soldiers seconded to Paris used to queue to buy the company’s leather-covered pipes, which were symbols of French craftsmanship and expertise. Focusing on the creation of luggage and city bags, Longchamp is a master in the selection of the finest leathers. Today, the house works with the best tanneries in Europe and further afield to find the quality and variety of leather for which it is looking. Smooth or grained, rigid or supple to the touch, these superior-quality natural materials develop a patina over time, becoming even more beautiful and full of personality. Transformed each season into contemporary new designs by the expert hands of the house’s craftsmen, these leathers give Longchamp bags a character unlike any other. They will remain the loyal companions to the most precious moments in life, year after year.

Longchamp shares the active life of women around the world, attuned to the pleasure of a hint of everyday luxury. Advertising campaigns infused with freshness and stimulating collaborations initiated with several artists highlight the contemporary and sometimes playful spirit of the House of Longchamp, which is represented by a wide network of exclusive boutiques around the globe.

JM Weston opens a new store in Paris Le Marais. History meets design.

Reading Time: 4 minutes

JM Weston opens a new brand store in Paris at 46 Rue des Archives. Located right in the heart of Le Marais, renowned district for its history, but also for its wind of creation and freedom that blows since ever. With its clean lines, this new address expresses the essence of J.M. Weston’s collections with a wink to workshops by paying tribute to the unique know-how of the craftsmen of the French luxury house in a voluntarily contemporary decor.

The brand describes this new address as an elegant and raw boutique, with walls in stones, exposed beams, wooden tables with slender lines to remind those of the factory. A singular and timeless universe which translates a desire of authenticity and modernity, faithful to JM Weston values: fiercely free, totally French and impeccably impertinent!

Rue des Archives, the soul of Le Marais

JM-Weston-new-store-paris

The interesting fact about Rue des Archives is its location as it sits at the heart of Le Marais. This district is an historical one. Le Marais is a French word for “Swamp” and in deed it used to be a peripheral swamp area from Paris where religious orders used to live since the 12th century. The area developed quite fast and from the 17th century, all the French aristocracy invested the area with their private residences (hôtels particuliers). By the end of the 18th century, the French revolution banish all aristocracy from Le Marais. Artisans, merchants, artists and poets installed their businesses and homes in the area which give a lot of dynamism. Le Marais is a true witness of French history. Several amazing people lived and still live in Le Marais. From Marquise de Sevigné, Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac to more recently Lenny Kravitz and Emma Watson. They all enjoyed and enjoy the special ambiance of this Parisian area. JM Weston decided to have its new store at the heart of this area because it fits the philosophy and the spirit of the French luxury house. It is a celebration of craftsmanship, talent, heritage and contemporary living. The rue des Archives is a crystallization of all these. 900m long, the rue des Archives was built in 1874 after the connection of several streets. This allowed the installation of national archives in Palais Soubise.

Today the rue des Archives represents a true pulse of Le Marais heart. JM Weston has carefully chosen this new address in the spirit of the luxury house.

JM-Weston-new-store-paris-rue-des-archives

JM Weston at the 46, rue des Archives, the new elegant place in Paris.

Each JM Weston shop is unique, not only in the crafted addresses that they are located but also in the interior design. Managed by Michel Perry, the artistic director of the house, the idea is to highlight all “traits de caractère” of the area in which the store is located. With the rue des Archives store, JM Weston celebrates the historical context of the place. The importance of the artisans  in Le Marais, the “hotel particulier” spirit and also a certain “raw” aspect of things that can also echo to the spirit of the JM Weston Manufacture. The great classics are injected with the freshness of a rather nonchalant rock ‘n’ roll aristocracy, rich and raw materials rub shoulders, calfskin suede goes hand in hand with box leather, cashmere is found alongside denim, and the medallion wing-tip derby echoes the loafer: it is all a question of balance. Decipher codes, confuse the issue with precision and lightness ; this is the art of the French style. Master the opposites, new associations, different eras. Inspire spirit and charm to a classic style with rigour and idealism, realism and impertinence. The iconic loafer reflects this subtle combination which is used by Michel Perry, Artistic Director, for its creations.

Sometimes we say it is difficult to be a prophet on his own land. After relaunching stores abroad, like in Geneva, JM Weston is taking care of his city of the heart. The first step was to revamp the iconic address of the Madeleine and now this new opening is a true statement of parisianism and timeless elegance. This new store will have a strong appeal to a local clientele as well as to tourists visiting the historical part of Paris.

Camille Bloch, Swiss ingenuity since 1929

Reading Time: 7 minutes

Camille-Bloch-Swiss-chocolates

Switzerland is the king land of chocolate and Camille Bloch is one of the key players of a flourishing industry. The Swiss company was founded in 1929 and its history is marked by determination and innovation, always thinking out of the box. Today, 87 years after the company creation, Camille Bloch launches Ragusa Friends and a very special edition Lara Gut, celebrating the tremendous performance of the Swiss Skier.

Camille Bloch, Swiss chocolate avant-garde since 1929

Switzerland’s chocolates have earned an international reputation for high quality with many famous international brands. From the 19th century until the First World War and throughout the Second World War the Swiss chocolate industry was very export-oriented. Today most Swiss chocolate is consumed by the Swiss themselves (54% in 2000 and 45% in 2014), and Switzerland has the highest per capita rate of chocolate consumption world wide (11.6 kg (25.6 lbs.) per capita per annum). The Swiss Chocolate industry represents more than 200 companies acting locally and worldwide. The Swiss Chocolate federation has 20 active members from Nestlé to Camille Bloch. The industry employs 4’241 employees for a total sales of CHF 1.743 billion. Exports remain strong, especially towards Germany and the United Kingdom. The national market is strong as well. Swiss chocolates are consumed by Swiss inhabitants but also by foreign tourists visiting the country. Exports have been gaining some field as areas like Asia or Middle East represent a double digit growth for the past 5 years. So key players like Camille Bloch has its role to play.

Camille-Bloch-history
When Camille Bloch created his company, the world was facing a strong economic crisis and Switzerland was not preserved. When the famous economic crack hit the world in 1929, Switzerland had a hard time. Exportations just melted down, unemployment was at 8% and almost a fifth of the population was facing poverty. Many Swiss people decided to leave the country and try their luck somewhere else. Others decided to capitalize on Swiss know how and dare to resist to economic recession. That was the case of Camille Bloch. His passion for chocolate started in 1926 when he had a commercial apprenticeship at Tobler AG in Bern. He understood there was a great opportunity to establish his own business and that’s why he created “Chocolats et bombons fins Camille Bloch”. Initially he would buy the chocolate paste already manufactured but he decided quite fast to manufacture chocolate himself. That is why he acquired in 1934 an old factory in Courtelary – Bern Jura. After several works to adapt the factory to a Chocolate manufacture. After a full year of preparations, the company opened its new facility under the name “Chocolats Camille Bloch SA”.

The Ragusa, an innovative idea that became an icon of Swiss Chocolate

Ragusa-Advertising-1948

A few years later, the world get into the Second World War and very fast, all transports are blocked, importations become complex to manage as several war zones would monopolize the transportations flows. Switzerland had a very difficult position as the country was stuck in the middle of the war between Germany, France and Italy. So borders were pretty closed with very few exchanges. Why this is important for the chocolate industry? To produce chocolate, we need cacao beans and these cannot be grown in Switzerland or even Europe. Cacao beans were imported at that time from South America and Africa. As we can imagine, not easy to travel in a world at war. So Swiss companies needed to find ways to use less cacao beans in their chocolate and still keep the same production volumes. Several recipes and production secrets were found. Camille Bloch did not wish to compromise quality, taste and their know-how as chocolate manufacturers, so the only solution was to think out of the box. And this is what Camille Bloch did. In order to save the chocolate paste and still propose a tasteful product, he had the idea to transform hazelnuts coming from Turkey into a paste. He would add whole hazelnuts and recover everything with a thin yet consistent chocolate paste. And Ragusa was created! We were in 1942. Why Ragusa for the name? According to the brand, Camille Bloch used to go on holidays to Croatia, in the city of Dubrovnik. This city was called Ragusa until 1918, date in which the name was changed to Dubrovnik. Camille Bloch thought that Ragusa was a great name that could work in several languages, so the name was chosen.

Camille Bloch, a success story until today

After the Second world war, the 50’s brought a new positive wave to the country. Industrial development allowed progress and a new era started. Chocolates went from a luxury good to a more mass distribution business model. The development of better machines allowed to serve a demand for more chocolate, so the production of chocolate bars in series was possible. Camille Bloch being well established since 1929 and keeping his innovator spirit decided to embrace this new era and launched another iconic product: the Torino.

Torino-advertising-1955

Camille-Bloch-Torino

The Swiss company was one of the first Swiss Chocolatiers to produce chocolate bars in series. The success of Torino is also due to its formula. Only the best ingredients are used to provide this tender and soft Praline heart loved in a fair layer of best chocolate. Due to the fact that there were no fridges in the stores in the 50’s and the 60’s, Camille Bloch could only deliver the chocolate bars in autumn and winter. So every year a strong advertising campaign in Autumn would take place to remind people they can get their preferred chocolate bar again. This situation lived still for a while and only the 80’s brought a solution to this problem so Camille Bloch could finally please the aficionados all year long. With Ragusa and Torino, Camille Bloch was able to build a consistent and sustainable business over the years. We should also add a third arrow to the company’s bow: the Liqueurs.

Camille-Bloch-liqueurs

Thanks to an innovative manufacturing process, the chocolate maker brought a very original product to the market, for fine liquors amateurs. The recipe comes from Camille Bloch himself and has been used for the past 60 years. From Cognac, to Williams, Kirsch, Grappa or Cointreau, Camille Bloch proposes a vast range of fine spirits.

Ragusa friends, a new way to share good moments

Chocolate is made to procure you happiness and positivism. It might be the sugar, or the magnesium. But in all cases is because you can share it with your family and friends. That is why Camille Bloch wished to celebrate the passion for sharing in launching Ragusa Friends. By launching this small format, Camille Bloch changes the Ragusa product but keeps the philosophy that animates this product over decades. Now you can please a friend, or even yourself with an indulgent moment. Available on a pack of 4 or 12 pieces, it is the perfect item on the go in your urban life. Here is the TV Spot to present the universe of the new product.

With the new Ragusa Friends, Camille Bloch proposes a younger vision of Ragusa that will adapt to a modern lifestyle: spontaneous, active and gourmand.

Mission Mesmerizing: Boost Your Confidence with Stylish Beach Look

Swimsuits-summer-2016

Summer is just around the corner and that inevitable question pops up: Are you ready for the beach? Sure, we are all eager to spend some lazy days sunbathing, swimming and catching the waves, but are we ready to walk that sandy path with confidence? Well, sure we are. All it takes a little bit of stylishness, the right swimwear and the best beach accessories out there, and you will be able to shine brighter than the sun. After all, there is no such thing as a beach-ready body, just a well-styled body you will take to the beach. Here are some tips to look mesmerizing on the sand.

Choosing the Right Swimsuit

The key of choosing the perfect swimsuit is in knowing your figure. Of course, every woman’s body has its own specifics, but there are some basic body shapes you can use as your guidelines for making a choice. Those are apple shape (waist is much wider than hips), pear shape (hips and ties bigger in measurements than the upper body part), hourglass (curvy and feminine, bust have equal measurements as hips) and athletic or boyish (no waist, slim hips, broad shoulders). There are also different requirements for women with large and small bust.

Apple shape: If you are an apple shape you probably carry some extra weight in your waist. That does not mean you cannot look fabulous on the beach. Just opt for some trendy tummy control swimwear or high-waist bottom.

Apple-shape

Pear shape: A pear shape lady should bring focus to her upper body part with ornamented swimwear, while the bottoms should be dark and inconspicuous.

Hourglass: If you have an hourglass figure, than you can get away with almost any swimsuit type.

Athletic: Wear a one-piece swimsuit that will create an illusion of curves. Also, you can use patterns to balance the athletic frame with a feminine touch.

Large bust: Women with large cups need an upper swimwear that will give them support in a similar way that a bra does. Halternecks are a great and stylish way to achieve that.

Small bust: Accentuate your small bust with underwire bra top, triangle top or details on the top (tassels, rhinestones, bows, etc.).

Small-bust

Spicing Things Up with Accessories

Who says that beachwear cannot be accessorized? Just as with any other outfit, accessories can elevate a bikini or a one-piece by giving it the something extra it needs. The unavoidable beach accessories are a pair of trendy sunglasses, floppy sunhat, large and conspicuous beach bag, and a pair of stylish flip flops, but that is not all.

Spicing-Things-Up-with-Accessories

You can wear jewelry to the beach, just make sure it matches your swimwear. The most sun-loving jewelry is, of course, boho jewelry, but if you are wearing sporty bikini, it will not look great, so choose an inconspicuous pair of hoop earrings instead. Plastic colorful bracelets are always a nice addition, if you want to play it safe. If you are wearing an elegant monokini in black or white, you can enhance its refines with golden necklace or bracelets.

Go Undercover

Cover-ups are a true must-have this year, and they are here to stay. Whether we are talking about beautiful and romantic beach caftans, kimonos or crochet dresses, you should enrich your beachwear with at least one of them, because you will need something stylish to take you from the sand to the boardwalk.

Go-Undercover

Of course, you can go for a more casual look with a jeans shorts and a patterned blouse, a maxi dress, a sundress, a romper, an oversized hats, a high-waist shorts, sarong, boyfriend jeans shirt, palazzo pants, etc.
One final tip: Whatever you wear the most important thing is for you to feel sexy and confident in it, the fashion magazines can lie, but your intuition cannot.

Sion Festival 2016, one of the best classical music festival in Europe.

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Sion-Festival-2016

We all know that Switzerland is an amazing country for festivals. From small music festivals to major ones, Switzerland stands for quality, uniqueness and expertise. One of the best examples is the Sion Festival. This year it will take place from August 19th to September 4th 2016 and once again, the festival organizers have prepared an outstanding programme. Year after year this Swiss festival climbed all the stairs of the Classical music world and stands today as one of the major events in Europe.

The International Music Festival Sion Valais was founded in 1964 by Tibor Varga, Hungarian violinist and renowned pedagogue. Three years later, he merged it with a violin competition, which quickly became an true part of the Festival. In 2002 the artistic direction of the Festival was taken by Shlomo Mintz, the famous violinist. Also appointed Chairman of the International Violin Competition, he invited a number of prominent violinists (soloists and teachers) to join the International Jury. The Festival is an official member of the WFIMC (World Federation of International Music Competitions) since 1976 and of the European Festival Association since 1999. This shows not only the importance but above all the high level of attendees. Since 2013, Pavel Vernikov is the Artistic Director. He proposes every year a challenging programme in which he invites personalities from the Classical music world to think outside the box and propose an outstanding programme.

Festival Sion has also as a mission to perpetuate the artistic tradition – and especially the violin – which exists for over half a century in the city of Sion, “capital of the Violin”.

PAVEL-VERNIKOV-Sion-Festival-2016

Pavel Vernikov student of David Oistrakh and S. Snitkovski in Moscow, winner of the International Competition of the ARD Music in Munich and the Vittorio Gui International Competition in Florence, acquired his virtuoso reputation for over twenty years. His intense activity of concerts as a soloist, duo and with Tchaikovsky Trio, leads in prestigious halls worldwide. Currently he is a professor at the Vienna Conservatory, the School of Music of Lausanne (HEMU) in Sion and Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, Italy.
He regularly gives master classes at the Paris Conservatory, the Hochschule Stuttgart, at the Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv and at the Casals Festival in Prades. He is often invited as a jury member of major international competitions, including the International Violin Competition Tibor Varga Sion Valais. Pavel Vernikov has recorded for RCA, Ondine and Dynamic. He plays the beautiful Guadagnini (eg Contessa Crespi, former Brengola), Piacenza, 1747, ownership of the Pro Canale Foundation of Milan.

Pavel-Vernikov

The 52nd edition of the Festival will take place from August 19th to September 4th 2016 at the Theatre of Valere and the Sion Cathedral. This year the festival artistic director Pavel Vernikov offers a creative and daring program whose quality rivals the largest international events .

“I insisted that artists can express their desires and creativity in tailor-made performances, explains Pavel Vernikov.

This opens the field for experimentation and brings a new wind to the “Grande Musique”, which combines the modes of visual expressions more casual and modern. This year, tenor Dmitry Korchak, for his only performance in Switzerland, will be part of the programme in a concert “AVE MARIA” completely imagined by Pavel Vernikov. Since winning in 2004 prize at Francisco Vinas International Competition in Barcelona and two prizes at Placido Domingo’s Operalia Competition in Los Angeles, Dmitry Korchak has continued to delight audiences worldwide in some of the most celebrated venues, playing some of the greatest leading operatic roles and collaborating with renowned conductors and orchestras. The concert will be given at the Sion’s Cathedral.

Friday Chronicle #23: Swiss Watchmaking says no to the crisis

Reading Time: 8 minutes

Swiss-Watches-sales

Crisis, Crisis, Crisis… We hear this since 2008. It is now 8 years that China is not delivering the growth it was expected, that European countries are struggling with economic development and that the US has up and downs. India and Brazil? Indian poor distribution and Brazilian importation high taxes kills it. Nevertheless, the Swiss watch industry has never been better. Exports are currently at CHF 22billion, which is more than twice as we used to have back in 2008. Naturally some brands have had some challenges but which industry does not? This health did not happen by miracle or by chance. It happened because Swiss watchmakers dare to change, to adapt and above all to blow your mind with true amazing ingenuity.

“In moments of crisis, you must innovate or die”

This year, more than never, Swiss watch makers decided to stand up in front of the crisis colossus and say enough of this negative situation. All Swiss watch brands decided to keep moving forward with innovation and to remind buyers why they love so much Swiss watches. The situation is pretty clear. In the world, 90% of total watch production (all segments united) comes from Asia, Hong-Kong being the big hub. If we get interested now only on the segment of $ 1’000 and more, then 90% of the world production is done in Switzerland. Here is the true power of Swiss brands. They have a higher end approach and provide you much more than just giving you an accurate time (which by the way your microwave can do). Swiss watch brands will gather and celebrate hundreds of years of know-how and innovation. They also have the trust of their customers as many of the brands have been around for more than 100 years and probably might be around for another century.

SIHH and BASELWORLD 2016 were a tremendous showcase for brilliant watchmakers

If we would summarize what happened this year during the 2 main watch trade-shows in watchmaking, SIHH and Baselworld, we can say that Swiss watch brands stood for innovation, differentiation and know how. While many brands are driving the cheap and safe route of mediocrity, Swiss watchmakers want to shine bright in the sky. In January, the SIHH brand exhibitors wanted to bring a strong statement about what they stand for. So several watch brands decided to highlight their iconic watches in order to remind the strong difference between standardization and unique craftsmanship. Here are the highlights of this year’s SIHH.

Jaeger LeCoultre, the 85th anniversary of the iconic Reverso.

JLC-reverso-gyrotourbillon

When Jaeger LeCoultre (JLC) decided to celebrate the creation 85 years ago of one of the most recognizable and innovative watches of the swiss industry, they wanted to bring a strong statement. By launching a new collection called Reverso One, the message was clear in terms of innovation, design and ingenuity. They also had a series called Reverso Tribute, inspired from the historical models of the iconic range. The cherish on the cake is the Reverso Tribute ©Gyrotourbillon. This watch is fully produced within JLC manufacture and possesses an amazing JLC caliber 179, fully built in-house and showcasing a spectacular Gyrotourbillon® that gives you the impression of floating in the airs thanks to a clever external mechanism.

IWC, watch-making for aviators and pilots since 1930.

IWC-aviator-heritage

Last year, IWC launched a celebration around its iconic watch, the Portugieser. This time, the Schauffausen watch maker is revisiting its aviators watches. Initially created in the 30’s, today IWC proposes a contemporary vision of the elegant sky adventurer. We would highlight the Timezoner Chronograph in which you can easily adapt the Timezone by turning the watch bezel. Another beautiful watch is the “Petit Prince”. IWC completely capitalizes on its heritage and know how.

Vacheron Constantin presented the most complicated pocket watch ever made

vacheron-constantin-57260

vacheron-constantin-57260-caliber

Vacheron Constantin is a true master in high end complications. Its know-how since 1755, provides the Geneva watchmaker with a wide range of techniques. Each Vacheron Constantin is a state of the art watch. This year they challenged the internal teams to come up with an amazing pocket watch containing 57 functionalities. It is a true world record. Under the reference of 57260, this amazing watch celebrates the company 260 years of continuous history. Never a pocket watch had so many functionalities.

Cartier, jewellery and watchmaking as one

Cartier-Double-Tourbillon-mysterieux

Cartier is the crown jewel of SIHH. By blending watchmaking and jewelry, Cartier proposes a poetic, astonishing collection of high end watches that only Cartier has the secret to make such outstanding pieces. This year, Cartier capitalized once more on its amazing in-house métiers d’art. One of the master pieces of the SIHH was the Mysterious Tourbillon Azuré pendant. This amazing piece displays an incredible 26 carats blue sapphire and from a watchmaking point of view the double mysterious tourbillon is a killer! The Cartier caliber 9463 expresses a majestic swiss precision wrapped with a beautiful piece.

The SIHH ended in a very positive note and all brands involved had a confident vision of 2016 as another great year for Swiss watchmaking. As the watch fair happens in January, we usually tend to analyse the projections in order to “take the temperature” of what is going to happen during the year. It will help us to wait until Baselworld to happen end of March.

Last month, Baselworld has also made the buzz and several watch brands decided to step in and say that economic crisis is not a fate and that we can get around of it (clock-wise please). The leading brands put aside the strong Swiss franc, the Chinese crisis and other challenges in order to focus on what they know to do best: innovate with a clever Swiss ingenuity. So here are the top highlights of this year edition, most of them became worldwide buzzes.

Tag Heuer and its affordable Tourbillon

NEW-CARRERA-HEUER-02T-tourbillon

We could not start a final review of Baselworld without talking about the Tag Heuer Carrera Heuer 02T and its Tourbillon for less than CHF 15’000. The new watch was a true technical challenge for Tag Heuer and definitely made the buzz. Just six months after the release of the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01- the backbone of a new collection of elegant and contemporary manufacture chronographs- comes the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-02T, a COSC-certified automatic chronograph combined with a titanium and carbon flying tourbillon. A symbol of the accessible luxury so dear to TAG Heuer, this model forms part of a new concept now being created: affordable Haute Horlogerie. This watch symbolises technology, exemplary quality, performance, manufacture expertise, and the perfect mastery of industrial processes and manufacturing costs which have made it the only COSC automatic chronograph with Tourbillon produced by the Swiss watch industry for under 15,000 CHF. The Black Phantom version priced at 19,900 CHF, is part of a limited edition of 250 numbered pieces.

Chanel launched MONSIEUR, true state of art in watchmaking

Monsieur-de-Chanel-Watch-Baselworld-2016

This year at Baselworld, Chanel made the luxury news headlines by launching MONSIEUR, a true watch for men. Despite the fact Chanel is a big company, the spirit of the new watch is more a “esprit manufacture”, meaning on the same spirit as independent watchmakers. The entire watch is manufactured in-house. Naturally Chanel will continue to collaborate with other watch prestigious houses on the regular watch lines. By keeping the MONSIEUR limited, it will please collectors and Chanel aficionados. Only 300 pieces will be produced, White Gold and Beige Gold. The recommended retail price is between €31’500 and €33’000. With the launch of MONSIEUR, Chanel brought a special wind to Baselworld. Chanel is always a quite discreet brand that do not search for an outrageous buzz every time they have a product launch. This time the project was too big to get under the radar. With this new watch, Chanel brings a strong statement in watchmaking. The French luxury brand is launching a beautiful timepiece in the great tradition of watch-making. The men’s segment is the keystone of the watch market and the watch itself is showcasing the best Chanel can do thanks to the dedicated and expert in-house teams they have in La Chaux-de-Fond.

Jaquet Droz, Automata and watchmaking, mind-blowing

Jaquet-Droz-Charming-Bird-2016

This is the new CHARMING BIRD by Jaquet Droz. This new watch has a hand-engraved and hand-painted white mother-of-pearl dial. You can see as well an Onyx subdial. 18-carat red gold case and applied ring. Singing bird automaton movement, hand-winding mechanical movement and push-button automaton triggering mechanism. Sapphire whistle system. Hours and minutes self-winding movement. Power reserve of 38 hours. Diameter 47 mm. Numerus Clausus of 8. AUTOMATON Singing bird automaton movement, hand-winding mechanical movement and push-button automaton triggering mechanism. Sapphire whistle system. Hand-engraved platinum.

Hublot, black is the new black

Hublot-All-Black-2016

10 years later, Hublot celebrates the birth of a trend by launching a 500 units All Black Sapphire watch. Naturally in order to respect the concept of All Black, Hublot has developed a “smoked Sapphire”. And here is the new model, purely an amazing design. Again, Hublot worked on a fusion of materials in order to bring a contemporary look to this new watch. The smoked effect is astonishing, bringing an interesting depth to the piece. It also procures a more lower profile than a full transparent sapphire.

As we can see, the Swiss watch industry has a strong answer to economic crisis. It is called innovation, daring and true respect of traditions.

Christophe Lambert at Kissthedesign Lausanne

0
Reading Time: 3 minutes

For sure Kissthedesign is one of the most edgy places for contemporary art in Lausanne. Until May 28th, the Lausanne gallery and shop showcases Christophe Lambert, Swiss artist. It is a very interesting exhibition in which Christophe Lambert displayed several art pieces. It is called LIFE IS SWEET PART 2. It refers as well to the PART 1 that was showcased at Art-Etage in Bienne. The work of Christophe Lambert feeds much of the history, mythology, war, art history, as current trends that draws equally in the news, Hollywood productions or in more confidential alternative creations. Daesh, mass culture, the cute little heroes of our childhood, even the children themselves, the evil murderers, hardcore metal bands, the products of the entertainment industry, all end up in the explosive universe of the artist. The binary notion of good and evil loses all meaning here.

The artistic purpose here shows an universe deviant but enjoyable, where cardboard paste decorations mimic a parallel reality and recontextualize imaginary worlds licensed. Christophe Lambert, life is sweet and shows the smiling face of family portraits, but the worst is to come.

The Biel-based artist, Christophe Lambert, signs here his third solo exhibition at Kissthedesign. Confirmed Artist , active on the Swiss and European art scene for over 10 years, he developed a distinctive style, inspired as much by the punk imagery by consumerist myths, cultural or chivalrous. Snow White on acid, serial killer spree, Bambi lewd, fluorescent Apocalypse, the world of the artist exposes a smiling facade on which transpires absurd postures and total anarchy.

Kissthedesign was opened in 2010 by 2 artists graduated from the Geneva University of Art and Design as well as from the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne. Kissthedesign gallery has quickly gained a legitimacy in the art and design scene among a demanding clientele of collectors and vintage furniture aficionados. The gallery has a beautiful and original space of 150m2 displaying designs from the very best:

  • Corbusier
  • Saarinen
  • Florence Knoll
  • Mies Van der Rohe
  • Hans J. Wegner
  • Max Bill
  • Alvar Aalto
  • Etc.

Postmodernism 80s also occupies a special place in their selection, especially with the creations of the Memphis group and Ettore Sottsass. It is thus the treasures of Swiss design, American, Italian, French and Danish from 1930 to 1985. Kissthedesign The gallery is also a cultural space with exhibitions of young Swiss and international artists. Since March 2012, the gallery Kissthedesign achieves a contemporary design exhibition program around unique or limited editions and represents young international designers such as Nicolas Le Moigne, Valentin Loellmann Frederick Dedelley Tobias Schäfer, Tomas Kral, etc. The concept of Kissthedesign makes it a unique and sharp space where history and avant-garde interact.

Friday Chronicle #22: China owns the Luxury Industry.

0
Reading Time: 6 minutes

China-luxury-figures-2015-2016-trends
China is responsible for 25% of all luxury sales worldwide. One third of total Swiss watches exports goes to China and if you consider all the Swiss watches that Chinese purchases while traveling we could consider that almost 50% of total Swiss watch production are bought by Chinese. So in a certain way we can say that China owns the luxury industry.

China, a giant luxury market, also beyond its borders.

Last year the luxury industry represented a little less than $250 billion worldwide. Despite of the economic crises booming since 2009, luxury has been not so bad with a year-on-year growth of 2 to 4%. The nature of different segments of this high-end industry have contributed to this sustainable growth. Also, Emerging countries like Brazil, India and especially China contribute to a very large majority of the luxury sales. We estimate around $63 billion sales made by Chinese in 2015. KPMG ran a survey in the Chinese market and the numbers are significantly impressive. 71% of Chinese people who answered the survey declared they have traveled outside of China. 63% of these Chinese travelers declared they have purchased luxury goods while traveling.

  • 47% for Cosmetics, make-up and fragrances
  • 37% for luxury watches
  • 32% for luxury handbags

If we analyze where Chinese tourists travels to in order to buy luxury goods, we can see they have preferred destinations. For Cosmetics, Make-up and Fragrances 60% of Chinese purchases these items in HongKong, Macao and Taiwan, only 51% in China mainland and 20% in Europe. France is definitely a reference for everything related to fragrances, cosmetics, fashion and alcohol. If we take a look to the luxury watches sales, 51% of Chinese will buy their luxury watch in Hong Kong, only 37% of them will make a purchase in China main land and 25% in Europe. Naturally Switzerland is the reference country for luxury watches.

Why do Chinese people purchase luxury goods abroad?

Why Chinese purchase so many luxury goods outside their country? Probably one very simple reason to start with is the 30% taxes that the Chinese government apply to all luxury goods coming from abroad. This means that all these items are much cheaper else where. Brazil is in the same case. Luxury goods get a tremendous amount of taxes, that make it very hard to sell. Customers with enough purchase power to be a luxury client will travel and save money in the products they will acquire in foreign countries. Depending on the “shopping tour” you will be on, the savings you might get could pay the trip.
chinese-luxury-travels  china-luxury-tourism
With the rise of internet, online shopping and online consulting became also a very powerful activity for China. Last year China had 680 million internet users. For the past 10 years the country has a year-on-year growth of the number of internet users of 30 million people. This means that more than 50% of the country population is regularly connected to the internet. 85% of these people connect to the web with their mobile phones. While the online luxury interest is growing exponentially, Chinese people use it more for information and comparison. A lot of them (72%) are still conservative about purchasing a luxury item online. They are afraid of fake products but also about after sales services potential issues. So there is still a lot of reassurance to be provided, especially for new brands. Chinese have good memory, so they will always remember a good product, service or treatment. That is why the online consumption of luxury news is exponential. Certain brands have benefit from a historical advantage. For example Rado was the first watch brand to advertise in Chinese Television back in 1979. Since then Rado is still a very popular brand in China.

China is a nest for millionnaires and billionaires, just ask!

China is still a golden city for luxury. The total population is 1.6 billion people. There are more than 12 cities in China that you have never heard about and that possess more than 10 million inhabitants. There are almost 850’000 millionaires and 55’000 billionaires in China. The first group have in average 3 cars and 4.4 watches per household. The 55’000 billionaires have in average 4 cars and 5 high-end watches. The market is still very young. 80% of luxury customers are less than 45 years old. While in Europe the average age of the wealthiest people is 60 years old, for China this is 47 years old.
millionnaires-in-china
So the potential is huge as these people are currently in the rise of their lives. These wealthy Chinese people spend a lot of money in collections as well. Chinese collectors are very influent and for some of them, especially in Art, they can reshape an entire market. Chinese collectors will invest in the following activities

  • 44% in watches and jewellery
  • 15% in ancient paintings and calligraphy
  • 13% in wine
  • 12% in luxury cars
  • 7% in Contemporary Art

At this rate, China is going to take control of the entire luxury industry. Not only they have purchase power as customers but they are also very interesting in acquiring the companies who produce, create and commercialize luxury goods and services. Volvo, Corum, Sonia Rykiel, Cerruti, Marionnaud, ST Dupond or Jimmy Choo are some examples of brands with a Chinese ownership.
China-investors-international-brands
There is also a strong aim for Chinese wealthy people to embrace a more western glamorous lifestyle based in certain social status symbols. Chinese investors have also made several purchases in the Wine industry. In 2012, a Chinese investor acquired Chateau Gevrey-Chambertin. The castle and the vineyard were purchased for $8 Billion. It is hard not to sell especially when the economic crise is still around.
It is interesting to see that the luxury industry needs to adapt to a new clientele with their own tastes, references and even sizes. From the luxury hotel and travel business to clothes, cars, watches or fragrances, Chinese customers have specific needs and requirements that many often are not fulfilled. Probably that is why they end up acquiring the brands (and the fact they have $44 billion to invest also helps).

Tips To Style Up At 40+ With Casual Clothes This Summer

0
Reading Time: 4 minutes

Casual clothing makes us look and feel good in the hot summer days. With just a little time left for summer to set in most of you may be busy updating the wardrobe. Wearing casual clothes does not mean that you need to look too young or sloppy. There are a number of ways out there through which you can look stylish by wearing casual wear even at 40+. So in case you are planning to shop for casuals, then let me show you some tips and tricks that will make you look superb in the coming hot days.

Fashion-look-40plus

  1. Special tops with jeans: Just like others, even I don’t like to dress up in a boring t-shirt over the jeans. Most of the time it looks simple and ends up showing the bumps and lumps giving me the most unflattered look.

So the most effective way to upgrade the look is going by a special t-shirt. It can be anything with a beautiful print, embellishment, design or a draping element. Going for button down shirt is another way to improve your look. You can either go for a plain or a printed shirt.

  1. Pair jeans with top and a cardigan/jacket: Another way to spice up your casual look is going a bit dressier. You can select the garment based on your choice. You can either go for a blazer or a cardigan or for even a casual jean jacket. To get the sporty look, go for a leather jacket. In case you have a plain t-shirt, this is the time to wear them under the jacket.
  1. Plain or printed top for printed pants: One of the best ways to look casual is by going for a printed pants or jeans. They are perfect to get the casual look. You can easily pair it up with a casual sweater or a button down shirt. You can even take the attention by going for dressy shoes. You can even make your dressing more casual by going for sneakers.
  1. Tunic tops with leggings or skinnies: Another best way to go all casual is by wearing skinnies with a short dress or a tunic top. You can look more chic or as casual as possible, by just choosing the right tunic you want to wear. You can even style up your leggings or skinnies. Either go for printed leggings, leather, simple jersey style or coated ones. Make sure that you create a balance between your tunic and leggings. The balance should not only be about the prints and colours, but also regarding the height and silhouette of the top.
  1. Loose top with a skirt: It is not necessary that skirts should make you look dressy. You can combine it with a loose top or sweaters to get the casual look. To add up, you can even go for casual footwear. You can easily get a casual look with A-line skirts or with straight skirts. You can find skirts for less just by using Psyche discount code while making the purchase.
  1. Long linen or cotton dress or skirt: To get the best casual look just go for a long dress. All you have to do is to pair your long dress with a pair of flat sandals. You can look awesome in a long skirt too but then you will also have the task to find the right top for it.
  1. Jackets with knee height pants: Something that you will find back in fashion this season is knee high pants. They look flattering and you can wear them with any top. The best part is that these knee length pants will not make your legs look short.

These are 7 ways to look casual and stay in style. If you have any other styling ideas for casual outfits, you can even share them with us.
