TAG Heuer, a Tourbillon for less than CHF 15’000. How possible?

Baselworld is over and with this year edition, several new amazing watches were presented. One big news was the launch of the TAG Heuer new CARRERA HEUER 02T. With this watch, TAG Heuer brought a little bomb into the Swiss watch industry by launching flying tourbillon for less than CHF 15’000. Some people say it is a scandal, others say it is the air of times. At LuxuryActivist, we tried to bring a clear view of the situation and hopefully we will understand better TAG Heuer position. First, a little flashback on the history of Tourbillon.

The Tourbillon, a master complication in watch making.

Watchmaking is an Art old of several centuries. In the heart of the art of watchmaking, the Tourbillon is not only a beautiful piece of human engineering but also a very useful tool in the exactitude of control. It is by far one of the most interesting and prestigious complication. In French, “tourbillon” translates into “whirlwind,” but in the watch making industry it is the term of a relatively complex feature present in some high-end timepieces. By default, all wrist watches are assumed to tell the time. Each function beyond that is often referred to as a “complication.” These are features which enhance a watch movement or offer some additional piece of information. A tourbillon is an historic complication originally designed to improve the accuracy of pocket watches. Here is the main principle.

The principle of a Tourbillon

tourbillon-parts

As you can see here above, the tourbillon is a concentrate of ingenuity. It eliminate most of the errors of rate, especially in the vertical position, for a wrist or pocket watch. The principle, despite the fact that each watchmaker has been adding their own touch, is about a mobile-cage in which all components are inside. The balance spring and the escapement are usually in the center. The invention of the Tourbillon, and its first patent was accomplished by Abraham-Louis Breguet.

Abraham-Louis-Breguet

The famous Swiss brand archives tells us that Breguet invented the Tourbillon idea in 1785 and only in 1801, after some improvements, that the first patent was registered.  And the first Breguet watch equipped with the mechanism was finally sold in 1805. With this we can easily say that Mr Breguet is one of the fathers of modern watchmaking. The invention of the Tourbillon came from the need to gain precision and exactitude in what we call mobile timepieces. This means the pocket watches for gentlemen and also, more specifically, the vertical position in airplanes and the oscillations in marine boats.

Because of these specific backgrounds, we need to talk about another important watchmaker and inventor: John Arnold. He was a English inventor who died in 1799. He is considered up to today as the most important british watchmakers in history. We can say that he was the first one to design a practical and accurate watch. This is probably what would be the first closest watch to the definition of modern chronometer.

John-Arnold-Watchmaker
John Arnold interested himself for marine timepieces and accurate chronographs. His late work brought him to imagine a mechanism that would provide a better accuracy to chronographs, especially in specific positions or situations.
John Arnold’s legacy provided the necessary inspiration to Abraham-Louis Breguet to finalize the idea of the Tourbillon. The pocket watch was the biggest challenge at that time for watchmakers. The watch would remain most of its time in the vertical position and moving all the time. So there was a big enemy called GRAVITY. In deed, gravity would then bring your watch to lose accuracy by the force it would produce on the watch mechanism.

So if we wanted to gain accuracy, we needed to find a way to counter-balance the effects of gravity in the mechanism. So his idea was to place the escapement and the balance-spring in a sort of circled-cage. the entire piece would rotate a full 360 degrees and its complete revolution would take generally a minute. This would then fight back the gravity influence and modern tourbillon was set up! Today, several brands proposes amazing tourbillons, all made possible thanks to the legacy of  the above story. During the latter part of the 20th century, the tourbillon experienced a comeback. The onslaught of quartz watches almost killed the mechanical watch industry in the 1980s. As a result, some clever people in Switzerland decided that the mechanical watch would fight back by transforming itself into almost exclusively a luxury item. The more complicated the movement, the more luxurious it would be. The concept was far from new, being borrowed from the reality that very complex watches can be extremely difficult and time consuming to produce. This undeniable fact is a cornerstone of why some mechanical watches are extremely expensive.

A tourbillon is easy to understand if you see one working. It is a variation on an escapement mechanism whereby the entire escapement assembly (often referred to as the heartbeat of a watch) rotates constantly on its own axis. In an attempt to bring more attention to their visual splendor, watch makers moved the location of the tourbillon to the front of the dial – making it possible to see the tourbillon when looking at one’s watch. From a marketing perspective, the tourbillon looks good, is complicated to assemble, and is steeped in history. It makes for a perfect complement to something expensive.

The average price of a Swiss watch with a tourbillon complication contained inside of it is $50,000 – $100,000. That price frequently goes even higher. As more brands offered tourbillon movements, an increasing portion of the public became familiar with the once rare mechanical curiosity. Everybody who wanted to feel rich wanted to own one – though few could afford them. Here is when TAG Heuer comes to change the rules.

TAG Heuer Carrera 02T – Challenging the Tourbillon.

TAG-Heuer-Carrera-02t

Since its launch in 1860, TAG Heuer has always pushed the classical boundaries of watch-making, always inventing watches for those who love to defy convention. The Swiss watch-maker is well know for extreme accuracy and technicality. For years, TAG Heuer has been producing exceptional high-precision chronographs. The result is an unique combination of technology, innovation and design. Since 2015 and under the impulsion of  CEO Jean-Claude Biver, the TAG Heuer brand is gaining a new dynamic with shorter lead times and faster development to better meet evolving market demands. The brand is refocusing on its core business, which is the $2,000 to $6,000 price range. The main novelties, including the «in-house chrono» Carrera Heuer-01 (with the re-designed 1887 movement and a new modular case), and today the Carrera Heuer-02T «in-house» Automatic Chronographe Tourbillon COSC, have all been positioned quite aggressively, thanks to the reorganisation and reorientation of the manufacture in Switzerland, which encompasses movements, cases and dials.

Just six months after the release of the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01- the backbone of a new collection of elegant and contemporary manufacture chronographs- comes the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-02T, a COSC-certified automatic chronograph combined with a titanium and carbon flying tourbillon. A symbol of the accessible luxury so dear to TAG Heuer, this model forms part of a new concept now being created: affordable Haute Horlogerie. This watch symbolises technology, exemplary quality, performance, manufacture expertise, and the perfect mastery of industrial processes and manufacturing costs which have made it the only COSC automatic chronograph with Tourbillon produced by the Swiss watch industry for under 15,000 CHF. The Black Phantom version priced at 19,900 CHF, is part of a limited edition of 250 numbered pieces.

At 4 Hz, and 28,800 vibrations/hour, the main technical challenge was to house a single barrel, the chronograph functions, the automatic winding mechanism and the flying tourbillon within a diameter of 32 mm, whilst ensuring the counters were well spaced to create a modern, balanced look. The main idea was to start from a Monaco V4 tourbillon and streamline the production and bring a lightweight tourbillon. The main components are manufactured in the brand workshops. The balance spring is produced by the Swiss partner Atokalpa. For the movement, it all started with the CH80 as a base.

The new Tourbillon, sold for less than CHF 15’000 brought a big bomb in the Swiss watch industry as for the first time, a Swiss brand proposes a Tourbillon for such an affordable price. in reaction to this announcement, Thierry Stern, CEO of Patek Philippe, brought a sharp opinion on this initiative. According to him, this levels down the market by allowing everyone to possess a tourbillon. He also declared that if the Tourbillon becomes a banality, certain luxury brands would stop doing them. That is a very strong position. At TAG Heuer, they see things differently. This is what Jean-Claude Biver, TAG Heuer CEO, says in an interview done during Baselworld.

Jean-Claude Biver et Guy Sémon

1. When and why did you decide you wanted to make an affordable tourbillon?
Jean Claude Biver (JCB): TAG Heuer has always been since 1860 a Swiss Avant Garde Luxury Watch Brand, with a very high perceived value and what can be called an accessible price level. Independently of the price segment, whether it is a 2’000 CHF watch or a 20’000 CHF watch, the perceived price must always be at least 4 times higher. Since we have build our industrial independency and being able to produce any movement, watch case or dial, we thought it would be interesting to start building our own tourbillon movements. But should we do this, the condition would be to present a tourbillon watch which perceived value would be 4 times higher than the retail price.

2. Was there a price threshold you wanted to hit?
JCB: Yes, we wanted to have a perceived value between 40’000 CHF and 60’000 CHF, which would request a retail price between 10’000 CHF and 15’0000 CHF

3. Obviously you can’t mess with the fundamental structure of a tourbillon so how did you go about making savings?
JCB: We did not do any special savings, but from the first design of the movement to its production and requested tools, everything has been conceived, developed, planed, tooled and produced in order to achieve such a perceived value. I think that it might well be the first time a Swiss Watch brand starts a tourbillon project with such a goal and such a concept

4. Why was achieving COSC certification important?
JCB: It was important to show that contrary to what people can believe, TAG Heuer has not built a cheap version of a tourbillon or has done special savings while building the movement. The best way to convince people about this, was to achieve the impossible bet: make it the first and unique chronograph tourbillon automatique certified COSC Chronometrer.

Toubillon at TAG Heueur, The eye of the expert

From an expert angle, what can we say about this movement? The new TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-02T Tourbillon features what we could call a semi-skeletonize dial which reveals the skeletonize bridges and plates of the movement. An interesting detail in this transparent work is the appearance of the main spring barrel at 12 o’clock. Of course as you can see in the image below, the main element present in the dial is the vision of the Tourbillon at 6 0’clock that gives you all the added-value of the watch.

NEW-CARRERA-HEUER-02T-tourbillon
CALIBRE-HEUER-02T-FRONT

Since the announcement of this new watch, everybody wondered how come TAG Heuer made a Toubillon for such an affordable price. This is what we think. Before any consideration, the toubillon is placed in an existing movement built in-house. The existing CH80 was produced and standardized in TAG Heuer processes. The costs are kept at the optimum  thanks to the assemble at TAG Heuer’s Chevenez workshops. In order to keep the costs at a convenient level, the movement is not hand-finished as many TAG Heuer’s movements. It allows to maximize the value of the watch and keep it at a convenient cost level. If we take a good look at the Tourbillon itself, we can see 2 interesting details. The first one if that the central sections of the cage are made from Titanium and the top section from Carbon. This means that you do not need any hand-finish on this parts that would generate extra costs. Second, the tourbillon does not have any specific polishing or hand-made “chamfers”, which is traditionally present in high-price-level tourbillons. Again, this maintaining the costs low. As TAG Heuer mentioned, this tourbillon was produced in a base of the Monaco V4 Tourbillon, so probably most of the pieces existed already. The simplicity of the finish provides a very technical and contemporary look to this tourbillon. We are definitely in a more “essential” exercise here than generally provided by more traditional Swiss watch brands.

HEUER-02T-SKETCH-FOND-BLANC

HEUER-02-Tourbillon-éclaté

One interesting fact was to understand why TAG Heuer was launching such an affordable Tourbillon and why now? The brand explains that with the verticalized and integrated process they have in the manufacture, they can show a certain flexibility (dials, cases and movements) which allow them to play with technologies, which have also evolved, not only from a quality perspective but also from a cost point of view. Every single aspect of the production process, from the first stroke of pencil to the white gloves placing the completed watch in the final box, have been thought-through. Only a true manufacture can allow this flexibility and cleverness. If you want to know more about the TAG Heuer new launches check here our article written while we were at the TAG Heuer booth in Baselworld:
http://luxuryactivist.com/watches/baselworld-2016-on-time-with-tag-heuer

Some brands said they would probably stop producing Tourbillon watches because of this “banalization”. At LuxuryActivist we believe it would probably be a mistake. When Quartz watches started giving time even more precisely than mechanical watches, brands did not stop creating mechanical movements and when you can buy nice chronometers for less than USD$1’000, nobody stopped producing them at a high end level. Probably the fact that you can buy a Tourbillon for less than CHF15’000 means that more expensive tourbillons will need to make sure the added-value to the customer is understood.
So why TAG Heuer has launched a true Swiss-Made Tourbillon for less than CHF 15’000? Well, simply because they can.

The Swiss Chocolate Industry, key figures.

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Less chocolate was sold in Switzerland in 2014 as compared with the previous year. In addition, consumers turned more and more to imported products. Sales of Swiss chocolate fell appreciably in the two most important export markets. However, buoyant export business with other countries meant that overall, it was possible to achieve an increase in terms of both quantity and value. This year, the strength of the Swiss franc has continued to increase the pressure from imported products. The difficulties experienced in the export business due to the strong currency are aggravated by insufficient compensation of the commodity price handicap.

Swiss-chocolate-key-figures

Total sales by Swiss manufacturers within Switzerland fell by 1.4% as compared with the previous year’, explains Urs Furrer, the Director of Chocosuisse, the Association of Swiss Chocolate Manufacturers. This decline in the volume of chocolate sold was felt most strongly in semi-manufactures such as chocolate and filling masses (-8.7%) and in chocolate mini-formats (Napolitains, chocolate hearts etc.; -7.2%). Whereas overall sales of solid chocolate bars rose slightly (+0.8%), the number of filled chocolate bars sold fell (-4.2%); the same picture emerges in the case of white chocolate bars (-7.3%). There was however a positive development in the category chocolate bars and sticks (+5.8%). Domestic turnover registered an overall increase of 1.8%.

Per-capita consumption in Switzerland based on domestic consumption (excluding powder) fell in 2014 from 12.0 kg to 11.7 kg. The share represented by imported chocolate in domestic consumption continued to increase and reached 37.2% in 2014. Since 2000, the share represented by imported chocolate has almost doubled.

Baselworld 2016 – on time with Hermès

Hermes-Baselworld-new-watches

Hermès is probably one of the golden crowns of French luxury. Established in Paris in 1837, Hermès forged its reputation for excellence crafting saddles and harnesses for horses. With this extremely precise and highly qualitative know-how, the French House extended its leather-making expertise to accessories such as belts, jackets, bags and, from the 1920s, watch straps. Then, Hermès got more and more interested in watch-making and by learning from the best horlogers in Europe ans especially in Switzerland, they decided to create in 1978 <b>La Montre Hermès SA</b>. They opened production facilities in Biel, Switzerland and a ln entire watch collection followed. Hermès watches are classically elegant with a hint of contemporary innovation. Every year, th French Luxury House innovates from a technical point of view as well as from a poetic statement. Every Hermès watch is a poem, an unique timepiece that will create a special relationship between the object and its user. Some of the models are already iconic. Dressage, the H Hour or Le Temps Suspendu are just a few amazing work of art that Hermès has been producing for the happiness of several people around the world.

What is new at Baselworld 2016?

This year at Baselworld 2016, once again Hermès surprised us with incomparable luxury details and know-how. Each timepiece could be admired for hours.

Slim d’Hermès Email Grand Feu

Hermès came this year to Baselworld to once more deliver a beautiful story of watchmaking, know-how, tradition and poetry. With the Slim d’Hermès Email Grand Feu, the collection sets the pace for a return to the quintessence of the watchmaking art. The Manufacture collection now welcomes models paying tribute to the art of Grand Feu enameling. The generous dial opening of this watch line provides an ideal space for the exceptional artistic crafts and expertise that are a brand signature. Hermès associates the Slim d’Hermès Manufacture with the rare technique of Grand Feu enamelling that involves perfect mastery of demanding yet delicate gestures.

Hermes-Grand-Feu-Enameling

Hermes-Slim-dial-email

The first stage consists in placing two tiny ‘feet’ on a copper plate, which will subsequently serve to af x the dial to the movement. Having placed the plate on a curved wooden supporting base, the artisan rubs the surface to condense, rigidify and trim it down to a nal thickness of just 0.2 mm. This process gives it the robustness required to avoid any warping that would cause the glass enamel to crack. Then comes the enamelling as such. The copper disc is coated on both sides with an in ammable liquid based on a secret composition. Using a ne brush, the enameller then applies thin regular dusting of white enamel powder, before ring it in a kiln heated to 830°C, which is why this technique is known as “grand feu” (great heat). The liquid catches light immediately, while the enamel powder fuses with the copper surface. When the artisan decides that the appropriate melting point has been reached, the disc is removed from the kiln. The first layer is still transparent, blistered and green as a reaction to copper. The artisan repeats the same operations of coating, dusting and firing five or six times until the resulting enamel is intensely white, smooth and shiny. The glaze created using “Grand Feu” enamelling requires no surface polishing.

The time has now come to transfer the hour- markers onto the white disc. The artisan transfers the black enamel paste onto the immaculate enamel by means of repeated operations with a dedicated gelatine pad. A new ring in the kiln sets the inscriptions de nitively in their appointed place and a piece of charcoal is then pressed over the surface to ensure it is perfectly at.

slim-d-hermes-email-grand-feu-decalaque-des-index-transferring-the-hour-markers-sandro-campardo

Finally, comes an extremely delicate phase during which the artisan perfects the circumference of the enamelled disc, hand- ling the edges and thus creating angles to ensure the smooth dovetailing of the various elements composing the dial. The three parts of the Slim d’Hermès Émail grand feu are thus soldered to pewter according to their specific nature. Watchmakers used to apply the expertise of “Grand Feu” enamelling to dials. Nonetheless, with the emergence of other skills, this demanding technique has become a rarity. “Grand Feu” enamelling is distinguished by its exceptional qualities, such as the inalterable intensity of its colour, as well as its surface featuring an organic and vibrant effect.

Here are 2 pictures from our private meeting with the Hermes team at Baselworld this year. We can see the beauty of the watch, the elegance of the movement thanks to the transparent sapphire back-case.

In 2014, Hermès clothed time in a new composition embracing femininity like a second skin. Exquisitely elegant with its dainty lines, the Faubourg watch celebrates its first emergence from the workshops by appearing in a variety of interpretations. In 2015, it became an all leather-clad cuff watch paying tribute to the original harness- and saddle-making expertise of Hermès. It transcends the art of leather craftsmanship by associating it with gemsetting to become the Faubourg Manchette Joaillerie.

Having become a second skin, the leather ows around the wrist like an extension of the case that has been fashioned in gold by Hermès and adorned with an entirely hand-crafted 36-gemstone baguette setting. Diamonds, emeralds, blue or brown sapphires: the stone-cutter begins by individually cutting each stone with in nite precision. The gemsetter ts them into their settings hollowed out in the bezel, before pushing the material back around them using a scorper, and hammering the result until the stones are securely held in place. He can then proceed to nal polishing to accentuate the radiance of this composition.

As we can see Hermes has presented amazing pieces this year and all of them showcase amazing know-how from Hermès ateliers. By creating a true synergy between all artistic know-hows, each Hermes watch could be considered as a unique piece thanks to all the manual work presented.

Friday Chronicle #21: an unexpected strip-tease at the airport

0
Reading Time: 7 minutes

Every year, 1 billion people try a little strip-tease in front of the security check in airports all over the world. Like it or not, it is for the safety of everyone. Traveling is so easy nowadays but getting to a plane is complicate.

Alone at the airport, it is your destiny

So when you travel, you better have time and a good mood. When you take an early flight in which the take-off is planned for 07:35 am, this normally means you woke up around 04:15. Hopefully you have all prepared in the evening before. So when you get to the airport, you realize that the checkin is completely full automated. Where is the nice Lady with the nice hair and red lipstick? Gone.
checkin airport
After you have registered your seat and luggage in the first check-in machine, you get to the luggage automated drop area. There you expect to see someone and actually you get a perfect a monolog with the laser scanner. So you checkin yourself your own luggage. No big deal if you have only one and one direct flight. Problem starts when you have a complex flight and loads of luggage. You get the feeling of going to a battle and a street-fight to get your way to the plane. I will skip the part you still need to find a room in the roof-storage for your handbag.

Welcome to the take-out-your-clothe-now parade

Sometimes you travel for business, alone or in a group and sometimes you travel for personal holidays. And every-time it is the same show. You need to strip-tease in front of the security officer and also the other people. You usually take out your:

  • Coat
  • Blazer
  • Belt
  • Shoes
  • Scarf
  • Hat
  • Watch
  • Any visible metallic jewelry
  • Cufflinks

check in at airport
During this glamorous moment, I always realize that several people are not really comfortable. If you have a problem with the way your body looks, and that you have worked very carefully to find the right trousers, skirt and suit that would make you look thinner and smart, the magic is gone during security check. So you see people trying to find strategies to hide, especially if they completely forgot that the long coat or the pullover hiding your bottom part is now in a plastic bucket in front of them. Unfortunately for these people, there is nothing to do. But the ones I like the most are the very classy business men that once they pass the security check do not feel as comfortable as before. In deed remember that old sock with the hole on it? Now everybody can see it. Or you think nobody would notice the old belt falling into pieces? Too late.
Airport security travel
And if you wonder if you should have wear socks before getting to that taxi towards the airport, well, now you know what it feels to show your horrible feet (according to your own opinion of course) to everyone.
The security check is the moment of truth! It is the moment we are finally just humans after all.

Please, do not forget
to show me your purse madam!

After placing the last piece of possible clothe on the plastic bucket, you think that that’s it. Well, you forgot to open your bag. You need to show your electronic devices, let’s keep it simple, your laptop, smartphone and tablet. Remember that awful cream you used last month (pick up any embarrassing purpose) and that now everybody can see it in the hands of the airport officer? Well if you did not know where it was, now you do.
Ok, let be serious for one second. All these are necessary as security need to be maintained. Probably if you do not understand all of these is because :
– you are not a terrorist
– you do not carry guns, explosives or any illegal material like drugs, human organs or exotic poisonous plant species.
You can still do the fast-pass but your shoes and clothe will still be on that damned plastic bucket somehow.

Almost there. Wait! What is that bip bip bip?

After all your efforts, you think you deserve the ultimate prize, getting to the other side. Well you just forgot the security gate scanner. When you finally feel ready to experience the uniqueness of getting through security you forgot the naughty nasty security gate that will scan your forgotten coin, your teeth orthodental frame, your hips prothesis or simply nothing as anyway there will be nice officer waiting for you to proceed to the body check.
Airport manual scanner

Body x-ray scanner airport

Body scanner full
If usually you hate to be touched by people (you do not know), here it will be your therapy. You might even like it after a while. The body check becomes more and more complicate as some countries, religions or any other reason might be against it, especially with no reason. So technology comes to the rescue thanks to ultra-modern body scanner. If I was exaggerating on the “strip tease”, with the sophistication of these new machines, you better be ready for the full-monty! Images are amazingly precise, so in case of real danger, the bad guy will not get through.

And suddenly, Nirvana… Well, almost!

To make a long story short, you finally get to the other side. Hurray! You almost feel different. You almost feel like purified, like if someone with a higher purpose (the security
Officer) tells you that you are a good person after all. That you deserve to go through the gates
of heaven, that you are good enough to get to the other side. Man, it feels good isn’t it? Actually no. Because now you need to find a safe place to gather all your things and put them back at their place. So when you have 2 chairs and just half of a counter, you better go fast. You take all your things and try to place them somewhere and it is never the right place. So your nice fresh ironed shirt is gone, you place your belt in the wrong way and realize how difficult is to close the belt with the “wrong” hand. Your watch is on your wrist but you did not have the time to close the buckle and you are missing a cufflink. Your socks are covered with airport dust. Should you clean them with your hand or put your shoes anyway? Yummy! After walking like a Donald duck you then realize that you need to stop somewhere to get the control on the logistics! Not because you wish to have everything at its place. Not because you want to put your shirt back in your trousers. Not at all. It is just because you cannot find your passport and flying ticket any more. Last time you remember it it was on that plastic tray that you are desperately trying to forget. What a thrill! If you were wondering why people take the train more and more in Europe… Now you know.

So, in conclusion you have 3 possibilities. You can of course stop taking the plane. Good luck to get from New York to Moscow or to Paris. You can also travel in t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops and no hand luggage. In this case you might end up at the customs because you look weird. Wake up it is winter!
Security airport strip tease
Or you can organize yourself as best you can and keep smiling. Travel is always a chance to enrich your spirit. And it worthies a little strip-tease once in a while.

Apple where are you? I mean the real Apple!

0
Reading Time: 5 minutes

A couple of days after the iconic Apple keynote, we end up with a feeling, that is not new, that the magic is broken. There is definitely something not working anymore and despite the fact it is always easy to criticize a company like Apple, we must admit that today they are not anymore the “king of cool“. Is it a maturity thing? Next April, Apple will celebrate its 40 years of existence. They are really a successful company. With a total sales of $233 billion and a net profit of $53.4 billion, Apple is the most profitable company in history. Their communication budget reaches $2.1 billion so they know generally how to make you crave for the next phone or tablet. But the thing is that people are not fool anymore and competition is better on certain things.
With the kind of announcements they did this week I would rather just not do it at all. This is more damaging the brand than anything else. Well at least Samsung, Microsoft and Huawei were happy.
Apple-financial-results

New iPads, Samsung was right

With the new announcements on Apple iPads, we can see that their speech sounds like Samsung: more pixels in the camera, a SD card reader via lightning and USB as well. So the entire philisophy of being autonomous and in a cloud environment is all gone. So Apple end up saying that Samsung was right to add usb ports to its tablet. With the iPad pro it is a different topic and also a different company. With the iPad pro Apple says that Microsoft was right. Microsoft is definitely leading the tablet market with Surface and companies are switching their laptops to Surface Pro 3 and Surface 4.
tablets-market
Apple realizes that people might have embraced the iPhone (as a true revolutionary device) but there is nothing really revolutionary with the iPad compared to competitors. Speaking about Microsoft, Apple has also “said” that Microsoft was right with MS Office. Since last year, not only Apple make demos with Word, Excel and Powerpoint but they even invited the Microsoft head of developments on stage last year. In a way, they have admitted that Pages, Sheets and Keynote are not necessary the best. This sounds like an Apple Developer nightmare.

The new iPhone SE… Or the new iPhone 5?

Sometimes in art we use to say there is always an eternal restart but in technology we should always move forward. The very first impressions we get from the new iPhone SE is that finally Apple got the iPhone 5 right. It is the same case they just changed the back case and naturally the “inside”.
new-iphone-SE
Unfortunately there is nothing really new as a product. So if you still have an iPhone 4 or 4S you might move to the iPhone SE and then you will go directly to the iPhone 7. What was the interest of this product? The price positioning is still very expensive compared to competitors so it is not even a recruitment product. Why bringing the size down of the iPhone? We could say that it is more handful when you are using your phone to… Place a call. In average we know we switch on our smartphones at least 100 times a day and definitely not to make 100 calls. So all the point to get bigger screens was because people are doing more than “picking up the phone”.

Apple watch, health and fashion

Apple-watch-care-apps
There was nothing really new around the Apple watch a part from 2 things. The first novelty is… A nylon bracelet. According to Apple there are 1/3 of Apple watch users that change regularly their bracelets. So it is a fashion item. The second novelty, much more interesting is the Care-kit to help developers to create new apps related to people’s health. There is definitely a health market that is constantly growing, especially in the US. So by placing the Apple watch as health tool they might get a slice of the multi-billion dollar market.
apple-watch-new-straps
Apple also announced that it was probably the last Apple event taking place in Town Hall. All keynotes will take place in their new campus where they have built a new amphitheater. It is a big change but probably people attending will definitely be excited to visit the “mother-ship” . There was also part of the keynote dedicated to environment. Apple is working hard to have a 100% recyclable iPhone. For that they have built a robot capable to dismantle an iPhone completely. They also talked about environment and how they are trying to be the greenest company possible. It is great to see that big companies are making efforts to get to ecology nirvana. Sometimes it is hard to measure the value of the news. In one hand we can congratulate Apple to try making a sustainable business from an ecological aspect, but in the other hand you could say: “how can you build new products since the years 2000 that are not 100% recyclable???” When they proudly announced they have sold so far 30 million iPhones so far, it means in average 3’000 tons of non fully recyclable material. It will probably end up somewhere away from our sensitive eyes.

So the true question is why Apple feel obliged to make events and announcements for so poor real news? Is it because they are in the stock market? Pressure from the stakeholders?

Certain companies went from market leader to… Nothing in less than 10 years. Take the examples of kodak or Blockbusters. When economic crises is bursting the way, only real innovation can guarantee leadership

Is it an unavoidable race for “new” ? The fact is that less is more and sometimes doing nothing is better than doing anything.

Chanel launches the MONSIEUR Watch as a “esprit manufacture”.

Reading Time: 7 minutes

Chanel-Monsieur-watch
Baselworld is always a moment in the year in which watch brands reveal their very bests. It is a special moment that magnificence and luxury are at honnor. This year Chanel just launched their first “full in-house” watch, called MONSIEUR, that gathers the very best of Chanel. It is an amazing work, true state of art. The watch will be available only in June but here is already a full overview about it.

Chanel, the iconic brand always reinventing itself

One of the biggest richness for a luxury brand it is the heritage. If a brand has a strong history and it is used wisely, possibilities are endless. This is the case of Chanel, probably the ultimate luxury lifestyle brand that goes beyond its own category. Chanel was founded in 1910 by Coco Chanel and her “partner in crime” Pierre Wertheimer. After the creation of the fashion house, fragrances followed 10 years later with the launch of Chanel N.5 in 1921. In the following years the French luxury house launched different categories of products from handbags, jewelry, accessories or watches. Despite the fact that Chanel seems a very feminine brand, the philosophy of Coco Chanel has always played with this idea of crossing the lines. She used to “steal” male codes to apply them into women’s fashion. She was also a woman in love. Some of her love stories became iconic and we can say that men were a great inspiration. Today, Chanel continues its path of success. The company does more than €7.5 Bilion sales and has a strong presence worldwide.

Chanel and men, a story translated into lifestyle since 1955

Coco Chanel was a strong woman, dedicated to empower other women with her self-confidence and attitude. But she was also a woman in love. Men always counted for her and they were always present somehow through her unique way to create her brand. The word or designation MONSIEUR is part of the brand heritage and reflects a certain ideo of timeless elegance and respect.
So we can see that in this feminine story there was always a man’s presence. And this is how Chanel innovates today in watchmaking and launched MONSIEUR. Chanel has successfully extended its brand territory to challenging domains and watchmaking is definitely one of them.

Chanel watches, a love affair

The first big hit for Chanel in watches was definitely the launch of the J-12. This was an amazing and clever idea that brought a masculine watch fashionable for women.
Chanel J12 is a watch range made by Chanel that was launched in 1999. It contains Chanel’s first unisex watch and has a style that has become widely recognised with its clean lines and fusion of masculinity and femininity.
The range is known for its black and white high-tech ceramic watches worn by celebrities. The starting price is around $4’800 for the basic J12, while the more expensive watches, set with diamonds and precious stones, can cost up to $450’000.
Chanel-J-12-watch
In order to achieve the challenge of being a Fashion house that manufacture watches, Chanel wanted to work with the best people and this people should be in-house. In this sense, Chanel SA acquires the entire activity of G&F Châtelain SA, a watchmaker and manufacture based at La Chaud-de-Fond since 1947. The acquisition took place in 1993 and it helped Chanel to create amazing timepieces. What makes Chanel watchmaking uniqueness is a “je ne sais quoi” that nails it. It is all about freedom of execution, taking inspirations from men to build a strong feminine iconography and having the cult of timeless elegance and good taste. If you add a precise know-how and a true watchmaking philosophy you get beautiful timepieces. This year at Baselworld, Chanel made the luxury news headlines by launching MONSIEUR, a true watch for men. Despite the fact Chanel is a big company, the spirit of the new watch is more a “esprit manufacture”, meaning on the same spirit as independent watchmakers. The entire watch is manufactured in-house. Naturally Chanel will continue to collaborate with other watch prestigious houses on the regular watch lines. By keeping the MONSIEUR limited, it will please collectors and Chanel aficionados. Only 300 pieces will be produced, White Gold and Beige Gold. The recommended retail price is between €31’500 and €33’000.

Chanel MONSIEUR watch, what do we know so far?

With the launch of MONSIEUR, Chanel brought a special wind to Baselworld. Chanel is always a quite discreet brand that do not search for an outrageous buzz every time they have a product launch. This time the project was too big to get under the radar. With this new watch, Chanel brings a strong statement in watchmaking. The French luxury brand is launching a beautiful timepiece in the great tradition of watch-making. The men’s segment is the keystone of the watch market and the watch itself is showcasing the best Chanel can do thanks to the dedicated and expert in-house teams they have in La Chaux-de-Fond.
By calling the watch MONSIEUR, Chanel connects the future user with the heritage of the brand and the idealist vision of men by Mademoiselle Chanel. It reflects the image of a charismatic, seductive, highly elegant man attached to his roots but yet interested in a modern way of life. He believes in authenticity and likes beautiful things. That’s why the MONSIEUR watch is a clear match.
At Chanel, they like to tell stories and as a great story-teller, they always start from scratch. Each watch is unique and has its own movement so when 5 years ago the MONSIEUR project started, there was a blank paper sheet in front of the horloger.
The new in-house movement is called Calibre N.1. Chanel loves numbers and it is a new adventure starting. This new movement is only 4.4mm thick. Its 14 lines 3/4 offer a maximum visibility of all movement components. The black look creates a sort of 3D deepness that is increased by the skeleton work on the bridges. The contours remind us of the architectural shape of Chanel’s men suits. The brand aficionados will definitely fall in love. The Sapphire back-case is a beautiful window into the watch added-value, meaning the mechanics.
Chanel-Monsieur-Watch-limited-edition
Chanel-watches-Monsieur
There is one exquisite detail still to be highlighted: the Caliber N.1 has a Lion head in terms of signature. The Lion was the preferred lucky-totem of Coco Chanel and from now on it will sign all in-house movements. In this specific watch we also find the lion head engraved in the watch crown and the strap buckle. When we ask Chanel how this project happened, they explain that first they manufactured the movement and its specificities. Then, they created the rest. This is a great celebration of Swiss watch making and provides all the credits to the watch movement. With its 2 barillets, the watch provides a 72 hours power reserve which is far more than the regular average for this kind of watch.
Another interesting aspect of this watch is the specific Chanel red gold, called “Beige gold”. The Chanel red gold has a light, soft-bright redemption that only Chanel has. It is a more subtle look than the standard red gold.
If we have a look now on the dial, we can see many interesting details. First of all this watch has a “heure sautante” meaning the hour indication is in the opening placed at 6 o’clock. The shape of the small window is the same shape as the Place Vendôme in Paris. Iconic. Then, the big minutes hand is retrograde and placed in a 240 degrees angle. It brings a lot of balance to the look and feel of the watch. The small seconds hand finish the overall structure of the time display in the dial.
quote-of-the-day-coco-chanel
Chanel is an amazing brand that will have the means of its ambition. By launching such a watch, they have completely embrace the true spirit of “manufacture”. With 300 units worldwide, we can bet that most of it is already pre-sold, so only for happy few. According to the brand they are already working on the next watches. Caliber N.2 and Caliber N.3 are already on progress.

How to Finance a Luxury Holiday with Ease

0
Reading Time: 3 minutes

luxury-vacations

You know how it starts: you look through your Instagram feed and holiday envy kicks in when you see photos of idyllic sun-kissed beaches and swaying palm trees. A week in Benidorm doesn’t feel half as attractive when you flick through pages of luxury holidays in Bali or the British Virgin Islands. The good news is that it isn’t difficult to finance a luxury holiday. With the right planning, you and your travel companions can be jetting off on a no expense spared trip of a lifetime. And here’s how!

How Much Do You Want to Spend?

First things first, you need to work out how much your trip is going to cost. It’s all very well splashing out on First Class tickets to a luxury resort in the Maldives, but if you don’t have two pennies to rub together when you arrive, it won’t be much fun. So before you look at financing your dream holiday, decide where you want to go and how much it is going to cost, and don’t forget to add in spending money and extras such as airport transfers. Once you have a final figure you can start figuring out how best to pay for it.

Credit Card Finance

Credit cards are a convenient way to pay for a luxury holiday. As long as you are able to get an interest free deal you can spread the cost of your trip and it won’t cost you a penny if you pay it off before the end of the interest free period. If you haven’t managed to pay the balance off, just switch the debt to a new interest free deal elsewhere.

Credit_Card_Reduction_Day

Personal Loan

Personal loans are a convenient way of financing many things, including luxury holidays. You can typically borrow up to £25,000, which should cover all but the most outrageously expensive holidays. Payments and interest rates are fixed, so you can budget with ease.

Even borrowers with a poor credit history can take out a personal loan. There are companies that specialise in loans for customers with bad credit, so if you don’t qualify for a loan from a high street lender, ask for more info from a bad credit loans specialist.

Secured Loan

Secured loans are just like personal loans, except you can borrow money and spread out the repayments over a longer period of time. The main disadvantage is that a secured loan is usually secured on property, so if you lose your job and can no longer afford the loan repayments, your home is at risk.

Re-mortgage

Equity in property can be used to finance a luxury holiday if you re-mortgage at a higher amount. However, because the loan is spread out over the term of the mortgage, you will end up paying a lot of interest, so it is not a very cost effective way of borrowing cash.

Everyone should go on at least one luxury holiday in their lifetime, so what are you waiting for? Start booking yours today!

How to Find Your Dream Villa Rental in Ibiza

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Cala-Hort-Ibiza

Ibiza is a special place: a vibrant island that offers visitors an assortment of unique, multisensory experiences: from the tawny glow of a descending sun to the melodic beats that emanate from chic beach clubs. The in-vogue destination, with its increasing assemblage of luxury villa rentals and sophisticated hangouts, offers discerning travellers a catalogue of dream holidays. In light of the island’s multifaceted character, we’ve collated some considerations that should be taken into account when choosing your dream villa rental in Ibiza.

Ibiza-restaurants

Time of Year

Contrary to popular belief, Ibiza does not close down each winter. There are a selection of bars and restaurants that remain open to cater for the out-of-season visitors. Generally speaking, skies remain a vivid blue, with temperatures hovering around a comfortable 15 ºC. Nevertheless, if you require the hot rays of the Balearic sunshine to shine down on your dream Ibiza villa rental, visit the island between the months of June and September, when temperatures average a pleasant 20ºC+. Visit out of season for heightened peace and relaxation. Your dream villa rental may change depending of the time of year. In the intense heat of summer, for example, you may feel it necessary to choose a luxury Ibiza villa with a swimming pool and expansive outdoor spaces.

Area

One of the most important factors to consider when deciding on a dream villa rental is the location. Ibiza, although stunning wherever you choose to visit, is varied by nature: as a small island, many visitors enjoy the scenic views offered by coastal retreats, yet the rural inner regions offer a more authentic insight into Ibiza’s cultured heritage. It is therefore essential to decide on the kind of holiday you desire. Do you value being located within a close proximity to the lively nightlife of Ibiza Town? Or would you rather wander between the convivial art galleries in Saint Gertrudis? While a coastal villa rental may offer stunning vistas and sea access, a rural finca rental provides traditional design, a child-friendly environment and better value for money.

Find the Best Specialist on the Market

Whether planning a wedding, a honeymoon, a family getaway or a luxury yoga retreat, use the services of knowledgeable professionals who have been in Ibiza for a long period of time and can help you to plan your dream trip to Ibiza. Whereas a travel agent would organise your trip from oversees, and often through an additional local agency, a specialist luxury villa rentals agency, with years of experience, will work directly with villa owners to ensure a smooth holiday. For peace of mind, it is imperative to employ the services of an expert authority in the industry, which has developed a strong and reliable reputation over many years.

Villa-Can-George

Casa-San-Miguel

Discussing the issue of assurance, George Burdon of Dynamic Lives said: “use a specialist luxury Ibiza villa agency who has been on the market for over 10 years; somebody trustworthy like Dynamic Lives, who has an extensive portfolio of luxury villas to rent in Ibiza and can offer local knowledge. Pay by credit card to cover any risk or get a personal guarantee. If necessary, meet them before travelling or gain references from happy customers.”

Casa-Thalassa-Ibiza

Rest assured and rest relaxed: a dedicated Ibiza concierge service can offer a detailed itinerary and sort the finer details of your holiday, such as VIP table bookings at the best restaurants such as Can Domingo, organising private yoga instructors, a maid service, and in-house chef or personal chauffeurs, and everything in between. The pressure to choose your dream villa could just as easily be made by trained professionals with a wealth of experience in the Ibiza luxury tourism industry.

How to Find Fashion Nirvana

Are you happy? Is fashion making you happy?

The answer to these questions will vary from a person to a person, raise plenty of other questions and call for heavy debates touching upon true values of life, our behavior, spending habits and ultimately conclude on the current state of things in fashion industry and the world. Decades of consumerism have taught us we need 50 pairs of jeans and as many shoes in order to be satisfied with our wardrobe and ourselves, that is – with the image we are exercising in public. The rapidly changing trends, current cuts and colors dictating the expansion of fast fashion are subliminally suggesting that, in order for us to be valued, we need to have clothes, plenty of pieces of clothes that will not only bring us personal comfort and happiness but also recognition in the society.

fashion-trends-fashion-nirvana-3
image found on: unsplash.com

Hand in hand with this “mantra”, there is a core belief in consumers that every month calls for a “serious” shopping spree, leaving the fashion industry well fattened with the cash inflow we are leaving them and us – never satisfied with the amount of wardrobe we have. Ah, the well known “full closet, nothing to wear” syndrome.  This accumulating of unnecessary things and a constant craving for new and different pieces is turning us into consumers rather than fashion lovers, at least when we are buying just because we are told to and not because we need it.
Fashion should be fun and uplifting, and not an appetite that is impossible to indulge; this is why it is necessary to mentally go just a little back in time and remember that the style should be based on fundamentals, quality pieces that we can wear for years and still look flawless.
An important aspect of feeling good in the outfit we wear is the quality of materials and their origin. Therefore, it is necessary for every woman to have her wardrobe contain quality leather stiletto shoes and a bag of a timeless cut, while men must-haves are definitely custom made suits, tailored for them. These will not only correct their posture but will also accentuate their physique and contribute to the overall look exuding confidence and handsomeness.

fashion-trends-fashion-nirvana-2
image found on: unsplash.com

Relying on timeless, classic pieces for style doesn’t mean you aren’t fashion-forward. If anything, you are allowed and encouraged to upgrade these pieces with current accessorize, experiment with styles and trends – but, what sets you apart from the fast fashion and consumerist approach to fashion is that your piece of clothing won’t fall apart after you’ve washed it twice, the color will stay the same and the cut will flatter your body just the same as the day it was first tailored. This rule of fashion is equally important for both men and women – with the right fashion choice, your whole attitude changes. Think about it – there is a reason why Coco’s little black dress is never out of style or why Dior’s shoes are still bases for many a trend today.

fashion-trends-fashion-nirvana
image found on: unsplash.com

Are you a slave to current must-haves? Don’t be. Make quality your only must-have, and you’ll be dressed better and feel better than anyone who’s picked up their fashion sense at some of the fashion chains along the way. Every fashion-aware person is aware that the true style builds on classic timeless pieces that are sewn by our measures from the finest materials and the colors we wear, or which combine well with other pieces of our clothing. Sure, trends are fine but trends are also there to indulge a fast fashion consumer who isn’t that involved in the true value of style but is rather a follower of what’s been presented as style.
