Friday’s chronicle N.18 The cult of “eternal youth” – a today’s mantra.

0
Reading Time: 13 minutes

What is more powerful and strong than religion, politics and sometimes even love? It is the aim for most individuals to remain young. The desirability to be young forever is a very strong feeling, more powerful and deeply installed in our today’s modern society than anything else. The fact we live longer bring us to a point that we would all like to be at our best for a very longtime. From small cosmetics treatments to heavier and extreme actions, we feel that anything is good to remain young if the result is there. Unfortunately, not always… But still. Aging is brought about by a cycle of various biochemical processes in the body that affect it both internally and externally. These biochemical processes cause the body to degenerate over a period of time, impacting the health, fitness and beauty of an aging individual. The prevalence of anti-aging products and services is becoming more prominent now as the aging Baby Boomers-regarded as the most successful generation born in the 20th century-have spurred a demand for various methods that can either reverse or slow the signs of aging. Estimates indicate that over the next 18 years, individuals from this generation will attain the age of 65 at the rate of 8,000 per day. So aging becomes a main concern and everybody wants to avoid that.

Mirror, mirror on the wall…

According to the Disney classics, all princesses are pretty and all princes are strong and handsome. Inside every girl’s heart there is a little princess seeking her charming prince. Inside every boy there is the hero prince, strong and handsome to be expressed. Basically from our young age, beauty and youth are an important dogma. “Age before beauty” they say. Well more than never today’s main preoccupation of the developed world is to find a way to remain forever young. There are several reasons why we all wish to stay young. First of all, the more we get older the more physically and mentally we have limitations. It is not a pleasant thing to see one’s body to get pains from a unknown origin, or getting a hard time to recover from that nice party on Monday night. Intellectually speaking there are also some effects in aging. We forget things faster and sometimes we also forget the notion of time. So nobody wishes to get to a bad condition as you might live with it for several years. Today, people retires between 60 to 68 years old. According to statistics, you will have still around 20 years to live with yourself. So better use those golden years to have a decent life. One interesting illustration of this idea is the new film called “Youth”. It is a 2015 Italian comedy–drama film written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino. It is the director’s second English language film, and stars Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel as best friends who reflect on their lives while vacationing in the Swiss Alps. It is a story of the eternal struggle between age and youth, the past and the future, life and death, commitment and betrayal. The cast also includes Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano, and Jane Fonda. Here is the trailer:

youth the filmThere is another reason why people seek eternal youth. It is a deeper, unconscious and probably higher motivation than others. It is basically the idea of not dying. Youth means being far away from death. When someone seeks desperately to remain young this sounds irrelevant as from a biological perspective we are getting older every day, minute, second, etc.. Blaise Pascal, French philosopher, had a whole theory about it and he believed that fighting the natural course of life, by keeping a joyful, amused and young life, we would believe that death would be far away. At least we would not think about it and focus harder on enjoy a colorful life. He talks about entertainment, amusement as the key for an artificial immortality as while men get entertained, they forget that death exists. According to Pascal, we use goods and activities not, as we self-flatteringly suppose, to certify our achievements or add a touch of bonheur to our inner life. On the contrary, we use them mainly as a way of concealing our bleak inner reality from ourselves and from one another. They are a means of denying our own mortality and hollowness. (Blaise Pascal, Les Pensées).

Cosmetics and youth, the big business

Remain young means often to keep and maintain a young lively appearance. You look young, you sound young and your lifestyle is young. So the way you look is key. In this sense, the aim of people to maintain their youth capital was an amazing market opportunity in Cosmetics and skin treatment. This beauty segment turned to be a multi-billion US$ industry. The global anti-aging market was estimated to be worth USD 122.3 billion in 2013, and is likely to record a strong growth over the forecast period. The report features detailed analyses of the potential growth drivers in this market-the Baby Boomers generation that comprises individuals born between 1946 and 1964, which is now aging and showing a greater inclination towards anti-aging products and services. Anti-Aging Market is projected to grow at 7.8% between 2013 and 2019.The anti-aging market is poised for a healthy compounded annual growth rate of 7.8% between 2013 and 2019 and is projected to be worth USD 191.7 billion by 2019. You can find the full report here
The face cream segment held the largest market share in skin care market globally and is expected to remain the market leader throughout the forecast period. The face cream segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.8% between 2015 and 2021. The anti aging cream segment held the largest market share in the face cream segment. The anti aging cream segment is expected to reach USD 36.11 billion by 2021. Certain brands like Estée Lauder, Sisley, La Prairie became high-experts in the anti-aging cosmetic care. They invest a consequent part of their sales into cutting edge technology. For most people, a good cosmetic routine is sufficient but for others, they express a need for more drastic changes that only plastic surgery can supply.

Plastic surgery, a slippery road… to where?

The Tv series Nip Tuck symbolized well the interest for Plastic surgery that suddenly got democratized during the years 2000. Remember the famous sentence the doctors always asked: “What don’t you like about yourself”. Cosmetic surgery is booming worldwide as people flock to have millions of operations including breast augmentation, liposuction and Botox. More than 23 million cosmetic and non-surgical procedures were performed in 2013, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). The United States topped the international chart, with almost 4 million people going under the knife or needle, followed by Brazil with more than 2 million procedures. Britain did not feature in the top 10 but was ranked 14 in the world by the number of plastic surgeons, with an estimated 865 in business.
The USA is number one on the list of countries popular for cosmetic surgery, with a total of 1,452,356 procedures made in 2013. Brazil came in at number two on the list, with a total of 1,491,721 procedures in 2013. Mexico hosted 486,499 cosmetic surgery procedures last year, placing it at number three on the list.

“The demand for plastic surgery continues to grow as medical advancements are made and technology improves resulting in a wider array of options for patients,” said ASPS President Scot Glasberg, MD.

Nip-TuckMore and more, there are new procedures to stop our body to get older, so you pretend to improve and keep things great. When we look to the top most popular procedures in 2014, here is a top 5 below in the US. Cosmetic surgical procedures rose 1 percent, to nearly 1.7 million procedures in 2014. The top five surgical procedures were:

  1. Breast augmentation (286,254 procedures, down 1 percent)
  2. Nose reshaping (217,124 procedures, down 2 percent)
  3. Liposuction (210,552 procedures, up 5 percent)
  4. Eyelid surgery (206,509 procedures, down 4 percent)
  5. Facelift (128,266 procedures, down 4 percent)

Despite from these very popular procedures, some emerging trends are rising, especially when it comes to Buttocks. Here are the top 3 most popular procedures that represent the latest trends in the US.

  • Buttock augmentation with fat grafting (11,505 procedures, up 15 percent from 2013 to 2014)
  • Buttock implants (1,863 procedures up 98 percent from 2013 to 2014)
  • Buttock lift (3,505 procedures up 44 percent from 2013 to 2014)

Plastic surgery is very often like a Oasis in the middle of the desert. From a certain distance, it looks amazing and salutary but when you get closer enough you realize that most of the time it is just sand and dust. As much as technology evolves, we get to understand better our own DNA and how our body interacts. One hot topic right now is Stem Cells therapy. It touches a certain limit of modern medicine that now can be overpassed. By being able to produce any organ or any piece of your body, people believe that they could live forever. The holy grail in the understanding of DNA is to understand the degenerative process that makes our cells getting old and die. Some researches believe that by understanding how this process work we could stop it and our cells would never die. This would provide eternal life to people. Some say that the human body develops itself until the age of 24. From this age, the body starts a long and slow aging process. Newsweek published an article about immortality in which the journalist talked about John Martin Fischer work. In the article this is what you could read.
In 2012, the John Templeton Foundation awarded UC-Riverside philosopher John Martin Fischer $5 million to study immortality, and in May, Fischer announced that nearly half of that money would be going to 10 scientific research teams from the United States and Europe. Earlier this year, Prudential Insurance Company launched a new ad campaign centered on a simple prediction: “The First Person to Live to 150 Is Alive Today.” Assumptions say that based on our technology development so far and health overall conditions, that the first person who will live up to 150 years is currently at mid-age. More interesting, in 1999, Aubrey De Grey published a thesis about The Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging; a year later, Cambridge awarded him a Ph.D. He believed that by dividing the diseases of old age into seven categories of cellular and molecular damage, and then by working to conquer each category through as-yet-undeveloped medical technologies, it would be possible to “cure” aging—not to stop it, or to slow it, but to repair and reverse it, the way one would restore an aging automobile, and to live indefinitely as a result.
In 2015, the MIT had offered a reward of $20’000 to any biologist who could prove wrong De Grey’s theory. Naturally it is a hard thing to do as aging is a very complex matter. So far we did influence aging by acting indirected to avoid external causes like deseases, war, starvation, better medecine, etc. This helped to multiply by 3 our life expectancy since the Middle-Age. Are we completely wrong about trying to live forever? Probably yes as natural evolution is not looking for this. It is not part of the Nature mechanics. Out of all these, people get assumptions that they should not. That is why some celebrities get younger as much as they were supposed to get older. it is a paradox of our modern times. In deed, “youth sells”.

Youth sells… Youth is the new porn!

Following this trend of “youthism” several businesses settled in the past 2 to 10 years. They display a vision of young people that is timeless, happy and sexy. This generates a big deal online as well as offline. New role models appear and the super stars are not anymore the ones you would have thought. Here are 2 examples of youthism and the power of youth as a very appealing model.

  • C-Heads magazine
  • Suicide Girls

Since 2006 C-HEADS Magazine shows a snapshot of youth culture, bringing together the most talented people.

The secret of youth? A healthy life

The main purpose of everybody’s life is for sure plain happiness. Aging i probably a true challenge for humans. being an intelligent “animal” makes us fully conscious that every single day we are getting close to death and the end of our lives. By increasing life expectancy, mankind faces a true challenge of living longer and to manage this lufe extension that progress offeref to us. In true fairy tales from Middle-age, they would say “they lived happilly ever after”. Knowing that people would die at the age of 30 years old, it does not sound as a big challenge for us nowadays. Today’s happy end can actually last for 40 long years and feeling you are getting old is never a great positive feeling. Naturally you can hope for a miracle and trust cosmetics and plastic surgery to keep things tight (not too tight) but the main conclusion is about a healthy life. The secret of youth is as simple as that.
healthy-life
Put yourself in a position that you will live a long and healthier life. Sleep well, eat well, get along with your problems and surround yourself with positive people. No matter the wrinkles, the grey hair ir the lack ogmf energy, you will feel yourself always young.

The Sapeurs, elegant dandies from Africa. Color is life.

0
Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Sapeurs stands for Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes (the Society of Tastemakers and Elegant People), are a band of men who turn the art of dressing into a cultural statement, and abide by a code befitting of the gentlemanly clothes they don so resplendently each morning. The Telegraph, in an article published last year explained: “the Sapeurs sense of style is one of joyous exuberance, flamboyant colour, polished tailoring and impeccable attention to detail; suits in periwinkle pink, buttercup yellow and poison green, fat regatta stripes, Jeeves-esque bowler hats, handsome canes, plump bow-ties, polished brogues and jaunty evening scarves, draped just so. It’s a sartorial DNA that nods to 1920’s jazz age refinement and has its roots in the French colonisation of the Congo in the early part of the 20th century. Certain pockets of the Congolese took inspiration from this new influx of French elan; Paris sophistication and elegance became the sartorial goal. When Congolese immigrants visited France and returned laden with finery, the Sapeurs evolved into a fully-fledged style tribe, adapting European clothes with vibrant African flair”.

Sape-sapeurs-dandies-africa

La Sape, an abbreviation based on the phrase Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes (The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People) and hinting to the French slang word “sape” which means “attire”, is a social movement centered in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo. An adherent of La Sape is called a sapeur. The movement embodies the elegance in style and manners of colonial predecessor dandies as a means of resistance. They are in stark contrast with the environment they live in. There is no more civil war in Brazzaville, so now there are times for more happy moments. These men, they represent lightness and happiness. Here is a documentary sponsored by Guinness about them. Very interesting:

From a historical point of view the Sape can be traced back to the early years of colonialism in Africa. And especially places like Brazzaville and Kinshasa. During colonial times, white people would trade goods and services against clothes they brought from Europe. So European style accommodated to African taste started spreading throughout all the western coast of the continent.

In the 50’s, there was a true cosmopolitan and urban elite that brought prominence to the music scene. Nightclubs and beer halls made up the venues home to young people seeking music. La Sape was synonymous with Congolese rumba scene that surfaced and which Papa Wemba made music about the La Sape style. The post-colonial years brought some instability to Congo and many people were jobless. This made a lot of congolese to move abroad, to places like Paris or London. They brought la Sape with them and started to develop their own movement in the 2 European capitals.

Today, La Sape is stronger than never. It brings an exuberant flamboyance, giving somehow hope for brighter and lighter days. It opens as well the country to fashion and more European style revamped by African taste. It is an interesting phenomenon that put a smile on your face.

Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions will present for sale an ornate gold box by the master Saxon court jeweller Johann Christian Neuber (1736-1808).  Unseen for 88 years this exceptional sale will take place on December 3rd in the Iconic Jewels & Treasures sale. The piece is one of 14 miniature masterpieces to be offered in the auction from an important American collection of 18th and 19th century European gold boxes.

18th-century-tabatiere-Johann-Christian-Neuber

Johann Christian Neuber was a goldsmith and mineralogist at the Saxon Court. In 1769 he became director of the Grünes Gewölbe, the magnificent State Treasury, and was appointed court jeweler in 1775. He specialized in creating small gold boxes, chatelaines and watchcases decorated with semiprecious stones, such as agate, jasper and carnelian. Neuber fashioned enchanting landscapes, complex floral designs and geometric patterns out of tiny cut stones, often incorporating Meissen porcelain plaques, cameos and miniatures. These one-of-a-kind objects are treasured in public and private collections all over the world today.
This excellent example of a Neuber ‘Steinkabinett Tabatiere’ bonbonniere hails from the late 18th century and features a micromosaic plaque from the workshop of Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1836), an Italian mosaicist celebrated from recreating Leonard da Vinci’s Last Supper in mosaic. This box was last recorded as being sold in the Ball-Graupe sale in Berlin in 1927, remaining in a family collection for the past 88 years [est. £150,000-250,000].

There is another super star that will be presented during this exceptional sale, it is a jewelled gold and enamel snuff box with timepiece and musical automaton, engraved Decombaz & Rich London. The names Louis Decombaz and John Rich are among those linked with the production of the musical automata that flourished in Geneva at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries [est. £200,000-30,000].

These amazing objects were a symbol of the social elite. These ornate gold boxes were favored as diplomatic gifts in 18th century Europe. In the early 19th century they became highly collectible objects and their exquisite craftsmanship has ensured this collectible status has remained to this day.

Travel-holidays

Just because the weather is getting colder doesn’t mean you have to stay inside. Summer vacations are fun and all, but you’re probably really in need of a seriously stress-busting vacation before or after dealing with the insanity of the holidays. Here are some of the best U.S. destinations for beating the winter blues and embracing the wintertime vacation of your dreams.

Beach Bum

OK, this locale doesn’t include cold weather, but if your idea of the perfect relaxing vacation has to include sun, sand and surf, you can still make it happen without traveling halfway around the world. San Juan, Puerto Rico, is surprisingly affordable, gorgeous and doesn’t even require a passport for U.S. Citizens. Does it get any easier than that? Bonus: This sunny city is also home to sophisticated culinary options as well as award-winning street food for seafood addicts and food truck connoisseurs alike.

The fall and winter in the tropics are beautiful, affordable and when Puerto Rico is hosting some seriously fun celebrations. To see how the Caribbean celebrates the holidays, don’t miss the annual world-famous San Sebastian Festival in January. Called “SanSe” by locals, it’s a joyful way to kick off the new year with a parade, street fair and tons of live music.

Festival of Lights

If Clark Griswold from “National Lampoon’s Vacation” is your Christmas spirit animal, then you need to put a few of these incredible light displays on your bucket list. If you’re looking for a picture-perfect winter wonderland light show consider checking out the 500,000 light LED wonderland at the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington, D.C. For the classic small-town snow experience, Branson, Missouri’s Silver Dollar City theme park boasts 5 million lights and a five-story special effects Christmas tree to end all Christmas trees.

If great big X-mas trees make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, you’ll love seeing the world’s tallest man-made Christmas tree at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. Rumor has it that the tree is so bright and tall, standing over 115 feet, that it lights the entire city up in a rainbow of holiday cheer.

Snow Sports

Winter sports are not just for snow bunnies anymore. Snow sports are quickly becoming the best way to enjoy fresh powder. Not a big fan of steep slopes? No problem. Get a great workout cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Or lean back as you drive the snowmobile and enjoy the scenery. You can even step out of your element and opt for a dog sledding experience straight out Jack London’s classic novel, “Call of the Wild.” Ely, Minnesota, is known as the sled dog capital of the U.S. It boasts some incredible scenery and the 30-year-old Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge, the only lodge in the country totally dedicated to dog sledding. Just make sure you’ve got some warm weather duds before you pack your bags, and start with your feet — Cabela’s has some functional and fashionable women’s winter footwear options.

If you’re a real thrill seeker who’s into snowboarding, check out the 22 foot half-pipe now open to the public in Tamarack, Idaho. It’s tall enough to get any double black diamond aficionado’s endorphins going. Just don’t forget your helmet!

Sunglasses in the Movies – A List of the Most Iconic.

0
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Sunglasses have always been associated with the stars, with celebrities long being pictured attempting to go incognito behind their shades. Who doesn’t feel a little bit Hollywood when they slip on their favourite Michael Kors sunglasses and go for a drive with the top down? However, as well as their off screen associations with movie stars, sunglasses have also made some pretty iconic appearances on screen in the movies. Here are just a few of the coolest sunglasses in cinema:

Tony Montana – Scarface

Scarface-Tony-Montana

The iconic sunglasses worn by Tony Montana in Scarface are a style that is making something of a comeback. Thick frames on the top, rimless on the bottom, and with thick, dark lenses – perfect for covering up your ‘crazy eyes’ if you’re about to introduce people to your ‘little friends’.

The Terminator

Terminator-sunglasses

He may need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle, but can you imagine the Terminator (while he still has his Arnold Schwarzenegger skin on) without picturing those cool black sunglasses? It just wouldn’t be right! These sunglasses look like fairly normal black Ray-Bans but they survive quite a lot of action, so we can only assume they have some Terminator properties all of their own.

Tyler Durden – Fight Club

Not that it takes much to make Brad Pitt look cool, but these strangely tinted sunglasses really added something to the character of Tyler Durden, helping establish him as an awesome if unpredictable anti-hero (that is until later in the movie when he turns out not to exist). The wardrobe choices for Tyler Durden were a big part of what gave this movie its iconic look, and these shades were a not insignificant part of that.

Just About Every Character – The Matrix

Matrix-sunglasses

The Matrix may as well have been sponsored by Ray-Ban – many of the key characters including Neo, Trinity and Agent Smith have some pretty memorable shades in this trilogy (if you count the second and third movies, which you probably shouldn’t). If you were to list the style choices in the Matrix sunglasses would probably come in third after bullet time and black leather, but that is still pretty high when you consider just how revolutionary the first Matrix film was from a stylistic standpoint.

Clarence Worley – True Romance

True-Romance-sunglasses

Poor, hapless Clarence, a man who marries a prostitute then accidentally ends up with a suitcase full of cocaine when trying to recover her belongings from her pimp, makes it through most of this movie wearing a Hawaiian shirt and Elvis shades. That he still manages to be incredibly awesome is the mark of Tarantino’s excellent script – though he didn’t actually direct this movie, he wrote it and you can see his influence on everything from the action and dialog to the quirky character stylings, including these sunglasses.

These are just some of the most memorable sunglasses on film, but it goes to show that sunglasses can actually add a lot to a character’s look and feel – some of these characters just wouldn’t be the same without their famous shades!

Private Jet – To Be Hired Or Owned?

0
Reading Time: 4 minutes

Are you in search of courteous and comfy way to travel? A private jet is the best solution. Private jets are best option for private and comfy travelling. If I share my experience, recently I hired a private jet charter from London, and it convinced me to own one.

Private-jets-reviews

Well, if you fall into this class then you could be thinking what I am considering, about acquiring your own private jet. But hiring a private plane can be another alternative for you. Since you know the alternatives available to you, selecting the best choice between the two is now the most crucial thing on your mind and settling on the right choice is extremely cardinal. Here are a couple of critical factors you have to consider when selecting between the two decisions:

Cost

This is maybe the most essential factor to look into when deciding to purchase or charter a private jet. Many trusted that the expense of sanctioning a private jet is high without considering the tremendous expense demanded in the buy of a private jet which range from hundred thousands of dollars to millions of dollars. If you are considering purchasing one then I think you should make sure you will be able to afford the cost and have the funds ready but in case that the fund is not promptly accessible then your most logical option will be chartering which is a quite less expensive.

Utilization

Having considered the expense, use is another crucial factor that you have to consider in finding out if you ought to purchase or sanction a private jet. How every now and again do you fly or plan to fly ought to be top of the usage agenda as you may be able to recover the buy cost if you plan utilizing it a great deal like more than five flights and you may have the capacity to begin sparing cash promptly. On the other side, if you don’t see yourself taking different flights a year, it may be better for you to charter. Purchasing a jet and seldom utilizing it can be viewed as an impulsive investment and even a misuse of your cash.

Time To Be A Pilot

Now that you have cleared the expense and utilization issues, the extra factor you have to consider is how to fly the plane. If you have no idea about how to fly a plane then you are left with two alternatives. Among your choices is employing a private pilot to fly you wherever you have to go. Besides, you can take piloting lessons and later turn into an authorize pilot and fly yourself whenever the need comes up. Whichever technique you choose, you will end up spending cash and a genuinely impressive sum of cash at that. Consolidated with the purchase of a jet, this may be more than you can afford. If this is the thing, then I will recommend you to hire a private jet.

Maintenance & Repairs

This is an exceptionally vital factor to consider as safety is profoundly vital when flying in an aircraft. Consistent inspection of the flying machine ought to be done all the time in light of the fact that safety issue may come up later, at the time of using. Presently, having a private plane of your own makes it your responsibility to deal with the repairs yourself or pay somebody to settle them for you which can be costly. Once again, that is another main reason behind why you might simply need to consider sanctioning one and since you are not the real proprietor of the private jet, it is not your responsibility to keep it safe and up to code.

When it really comes down to making a choice, you are advised to remember the aforementioned points, but you are even advised to remember your very own preferences in mind as well. Although at first look it appears that it is ideal to purchase a private plane than to hire a private plane.
