Victorinox is launching a beautiful pocket knife called the Victorinox Damascus Limited Edition 2011. It is based on the Victorinox Climber, their Alpinist and trekking tool.

The creator of the Swiss army knife reinvents itself each year by bringing to the market surprising products generated on the trail of its heritage. Before summer, they launched a very original product called the Victorinox Tomo in partnership with Abitax Tokyo. Now they tell a new story thanks to the exploration of a special stainless steel technique: the Damascus steel. According to history, Damascusvictorinox damascus 2011 steel was a term used by several cultures from the Medieval period onward to describe a type of steel used in swordmaking from about 300 BC to 1700 AD. These swords are characterized by distinctive patterns of banding and mottling reminiscent of flowing water. Such blades were reputed to be not only tough and resistant to shattering, but capable of being honed to a sharp and resilient edge. Today, the term is used to describe steel that mimics the appearance and performance of Damascus steel, usually that which is produced by either crucible forging or pattern welding.

This beautiful edition is presented in a luxury black, soft touch box revealing the pocket tool through a glass window. Once in the hand, we can experience a very elegant product. The handle is made of ebony wood. This strong and solid exotic wood, once polished, becomes soft, texturized and really refined.

Only 4,000 units will be produced. So only a happy few number of people will be the owners of these little beauties. The recommended retail price will be 160 euros. Victorinox considers itself as a “practical luxury” brand, which means high-qualitative products for our everyday lives at an affordable price. All these products will always carry the four key values of the brand: Quality, Innovation, Iconic design and functionality. We can see that more and more Victorinox Brand guidelines are pushing the brand towards a more lifestyle area and for these I would say we have a brand that I would describe as “Intelligent luxury”. This means a Brand who will manufacture a product with all the elegance and the different important details but with the goal of serving you in a daily base. Luxury with a purpose versus luxury for Bourdieu’s “luxe ostentatoire”.

  1. Hi again
Hope it is ok with my question:-)
I know that expencive and exotic woods have been used/use on different categories of the company, example is Rosewood, Bubinga, Beech. Ebony wood is alittle new to me, i found some on internet that this has been used on musical instruments and that it got the compact density, like you also mention a wood with history, is this first time used on an Officier?Have a feeling it has more history, i believe similar wood was used on the 125th Anniversary Soldier.
    Greetings
    Trond

  2. Hi Morten

Sure this is a Swiss Army Knife, i do not know if Norway should be so lucky to get one? The Damascus Alox i know some collectors in the US received, The Climber is in the Officiers range, perhaps the best known Swiss Army Knife.
I do now understand atleast believe i do that Damascus steel is a part of a mythology or folklore, this steel is probarbly having the specs of mythology steel in the sence that it is more that decoration and have the abilities of the mythos within reason:-)

  3. Hi José

Thank you for showing us the fantastic Stainless Damaskus blade Officiers Climber, we all know that this range of Victorinox models is the most famous and really deserve to be given this tribute, Mr Karl Elsener III is now in the Cutlery Hall of fame for his lifetime devotion to the Swiss Army Knife, he has perfected the Officiers models and elevated the staus to perfection, like you mention in the video intelligent luxury, even the standard range is a practical luxury, the ones with red plastic scales and HRC 56 1.4110 blades.

One really get put on the ground in respect for the company and Mr Elsener the III, what is also heart warming is that the Elsener family is still running the show, this is also rare in the world.
The Champion was for a time the most famous and today maybe the SwissChamp is, these has also some special scales, some others aswell. The climber is probarbly the bestseller in Norway, also famous in the world, This new Stainless Damaskus looks superb, only 4000,

    Alittle more on the steel:
If one see in the 1984 book the knife and its history and also on internet we can see that Stanless steel was a hugely important feature of cutlery, with again the Elsener family Pioneering feat…..Damaskus with paterns and recreation of the stunning Damaskus soul of steel

    Best regards and greetings
    Trond
