Parmigiani Fleurier – It is all about the love of watchmaking

Parmigiani is a contemporary story of watchmaking. One that deserves to be told as only a few watchmakers dared to launch a new brand, in the middle of the Quartz crisis. In 1974, Michel Parmigiani had only recently graduated when the watchmaking industry was confronted with an unprecedented crisis caused by the massive influx of quartz movements from Asia. Within a decade, what would later be referred to as “the Quartz Crisis” saw the loss of 90,000 jobs and affected whole territories. Watchmaking activity even vanished from Val-de-Travers. Such was the context in 1976, when Michel Parmigiani decided to open his own workshop in Couvet and dedicate himself to traditional watchmaking and restoration. “When you’ve worked on marvels of the past that are part of our civilisation’s heritage as I have had the chance to,” he would say much later, “you just couldn’t have believed back then, that traditional watchmaking would end like this.” Since then, his approach has been clear. It is based on the conviction that it is impossible, harmful even, to break away from the traditional watchmaking art.

And it was restoration that, in 1980, brought about the most important meeting in Michel Parmigiani’s career: he met the Landolt family. Heir to the Sandoz pharmaceutical group, now known as Novartis, the Landolt family held one of Switzerland’s most impressive collections of pocket watches and automata: the Maurice-Yves Sandoz Collection. At that time, Effrène Jobin, Curator of the Watchmaking Museum in Le Locle, was in charge of restoring these amazing artefacts. He was looking for a successor, in preparation for his retirement. He introduced Michel Parmigiani to the family, who were confident in entrusting their collection to him. Over the years, the family discovered Michel Parmigiani’s watchmaking talent and his expertise in the decorative arts. It was the beginning of a friendship based on mutual trust. Pierre Landolt persuaded Michel Parmigiani to move out of his somewhat cramped workshop and embark on a more ambitious project: to create his own brand. Parmigiani Fleurier was born in 1996.

Last year, Parmigiani Fleurier celebrated this important anniversary by showcasing the many achievements of its independent manufacture. It is the birthplace of exceptional pieces and inventions, a place where primary research is conducted on a daily basis, resulting in all the hallmarks of its exacting timepieces. These factors are just some of many that demonstrate the brand’s capacity to create, innovate and produce.

With the launch of the new Toric Chronometre 2017, 2 watch case variations are presented: A White and Pink Gold versions. Wearing a watch is about finding the perfect harmony between your wrist and your look. The Toric watch case has been redesigned in order to perfectly match your wrist. The curved contours provides a contemporary look to the watch. While it retains the signature codes of the collection, the aesthetic of the Toric Chronomètre is understated, we clearly see a sort of complex simplicity symbol of elegance, luxury and sophistication.

Parmigiani Fleurier is also known for its know how in dials. Here you can see a beautiful work around a Black Opaline and a White grained version. The unique texture background is obtained by a precise technique of brushing the dial with a mixture of salt and silver powder. Two beautiful javelin hands highlights time and a very elegant seconds hand will complete the display. One important element in the dial is the date display positioned at 6 o’clock.

One interesting aspect of Parmigiani Fleurier to take in consideration is the high-standard test phase that all Parmigiani watches follow. A lot of people knows the COSC, but many experts say that the Fleurier test is much more extreme and difficult to pass. The Movement must pass the “Chronofiable test“. This means:

An ageing cycle,

  • Test cycles designed to measure the pull-and-push forces on the stem,
  • Test cycles designed to measure the forces exerted on the pushbuttons (chronograph controls, correctors, etc.) turning bezel…
  • Tests on reactions to magnetic fields,
  • Shock-resistance tests using a heavy pendulum or striker, except for delicate complications
  • Water resistance test.

The following number of watches (without the strap/bracelet) must be submitted :

  • For a model produced in a series of 1 to 100 units : 5 units
  • For a model produced in a series of 101 to 200 units : 10 units
  • For a model produced in a series more than 201 units : 20 units

The watch, in its final form, undergoes a last test on the Fleuritest machine.

  • A 24-hour operating test is conducted on the machine, which recreates the movements of a nycthemeral cycle, alternating between active or extremely active phases (sport, etc.) and calmer ones.
  • Variations in rate are analysed by means of an image capture system using digital cameras.
  • Fully computerised, the machine observes the time just as the future wearer will do, but in an extremely precise way.
  • The precision of the watch must fall within the range of 0 to +5 seconds per day.
  • At the end of the test, if the watch has passed, a certificate is issued for each watch, specifying the number on the movement and the case.
  • The watch is then entitled to the certification “FQF, La Haute Horlogerie certifiée”.

For this 27th year, the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) will present several new interesting topics to note. For the past 27 years, SIHH has given visitors a 360° view of horological expertise. Spotlighting each brand inside a thoughtfully designed setting, it remains true to its fundamental vocation as an important and exclusive rendezvous for the sector. Visitors can discover the latest collections, meet other professionals, spot future trends, and exchange with the 17 historic Maisons and the new wave of independent artisan-creators inside the “Carré des Horlogers”.

Last year, 24 exhibiting Maisons were at the 2016 SIHH. This was one of the two major innovations at this 26th edition, which welcomed nine independent workshops and creators to join the 15 established Maisons that have made the SIHH the first key gathering of the watchmaking year. These nine contemporary brands, which these past years have imposed their own style and distinctive identity, exhibited in the Carré des Horlogers, an area adjacent to the leading names in the profession, to offer a broader outlook on Fine Watchmaking and the immense creativity for which it is known. In her inauguration speech, Fabienne Lupo, Chairwoman and Managing Director of the FHH, organiser of the SIHH, observed that

“The common denominators of all the Maisons at the SIHH are creativity, expertise, craftsmanship, excellence and the desire to achieve the impossible. Most of all, though, they share the heritage and longevity of an art that must continue to thrive.“

2016 was a tuff year for Swiss Watch makers. If we would summarize what happened this year during the 2 main watch trade-shows in watchmaking, SIHH and Baselworld, we can say that Swiss watch brands stood for innovation, differentiation and know how. While many brands are driving the cheap and safe route of mediocrity, Swiss watchmakers want to shine bright in the sky. In January, the SIHH brand exhibitors wanted to bring a strong statement about what they stand for. So several watch brands decided to highlight their iconic watches in order to remind the strong difference between standardization and unique craftsmanship. Last year during the 26th SIHH we saw amazing things. The Jaeger LeCoultre 85th anniversary of the Reverso, IWC celebration of aviator’s watch, Vacheron Constantin’s most complicated watch ever made or the amazing craftsmanship of Cartier’s jewelry in watchmaking.

With  this new edition we can see the return of Girard Perregaux and the arrival of Ulysse Nardin as main exhibitors. In parallel we see as well the arrival of 5 independent brands at the Carré des Horlogers. Bringing the total number of exhibitors as 30 Watch Brands. It shows that year after year, the SIHH is growing and attract more and more watch brands. Hosted in Geneva and at the beginning of the year, it also represent a great advantage to the commercial people that can already start making business from Day one.

First time the Public can visit SIHH

Probably the biggest change is the open day to the public that will allow anyone to buy a ticket and visit the event. SIHH opens its doors to the public on Friday 20th January, between 11am and 6pm, subject to ticket availability. Here’s where you’ll find all the information you need to make the most of this exclusive day. Obviously there are some restrictions in terms of number of tickets.

  • One person can purchase a maximum of 4 tickets
  • Each ticket is nominative, which means that you will need to provide an ID Photo and the ID details for each badge.
  • The ticket will be a badge that each person wear during the Open day and cannot be borrowed by someone else
  • There is a minimum age: 16 years old
  • Each ticket costs 70 CHF

Intended until now to be a private event for distribution professionals and the media only, the Salon will be open to the general public for one day. This is a first for lovers of fine watchmaking, who will have the chance to visit the SIHH on the Friday, the final day of the Salon. The exhibitors considered it essential to be able to reach an audience whose enthusiasm continues to grow – just like the Salon itself, which is reinforcing its reputation as the most important event in the Haute Horlogerie calendar.

SIHH 2017: The New Mobile App

One of the important new developments during this 27th edition of the SIHH, is the launch of the official mobile APP. It has been in the pipes for a while and 2017 will be the year of this important launch. The App was created as a useful pocket companion that should help you navigate within the SIHH show but also contains useful tips for your trip to Geneva. Professionals will have a dedicated section that will allow for example journalists to follow their own personal calendar of events, meetings, etc… You are able to connect with LinkedIn which will provide you extra functionalities to exchange and eventually find new business opportunities .

Pre-SIHH 2017, some key highlights

2016 is not over that some brands have released already their pre-SIHH 2017 communication. Here are some of the highlights, so you might be water-mouthring until January. 2016 being a modest year for Swiss watchmaking, brands will for sure capitalize on their strength and on their icons. We assume to see a SIHH that will be back to basics, presenting beautiful creations aligned with the air of times.

Pre-SIHH 2017: Panerai Radiomir 2017

The Radiomir watch is one of the biggest iconic watches in the all watch industry. Its unique and bold design brings a true identity to this watch. It was back in 1935 when Panerai started its cooperation with the Italian Navy and supplied precision pocket watches that was especially designed for military use. From 1936, the Italian Navy commissioned Panerai to work on a diving watch that could resist anything due to intense use. 2 years later, 1938, the first Panerai Radiomir were produced. The name Radiomir comes from the luminescent product used in the dial – Later Luminor – that allowed an improved visibility of the dial under water. The legend was set. The 2017 edition celebrates the uniqueness of the Panerai Radiomir and brings to the fans this vintage look that is very “current” in a way.

Pre-SIHH 2017: Jaeger-LeCoultre – Duomètre models with magnetite grey dials

The Duomètre collection is a well established watch line within Jaeger LeCoultre portfolio. During the 2017 SIHH, the Swiss brand will reveal 3 new interpretations of the Duomètre Sphérotourbillon, Duomètre Chronographe and Duomètre Quantième Lunaire models, all of them characterised by a magnetite grey dial with an opaline finish framed by a 42 mm pink gold case. With the Duomètre, Jaeger LeCoultre resolved a longtime problem in watchmaking. Basically, any complication added to a watch uses up some power provided by the barrel. Obviously this energy consumption can have significant implications in the accuracy of the watch. The clever approach is what Jaeger LeCoultre call the Dual-Wing. They separated the energy. The basic functions (hours-minutes-seconds) have its own movement and the extra complication will have its own power source as well. To make a long story short: the watch has 2 movements. Clever.

By taking the time to get to know the creator, you are simply adding another dimension to the piece and the room it will be placed in.

On May 29th 1996, the brand Parmigiani Fleurier is founded. It is born from the trust woven between Michel Parmigiani and the Sandoz Family Foundation who have acknowledged his talent as a watchmaker. 20 years later, the Fleurier watch-maker is keeping with innovation and know-how. SIHH 2017 starts and Parmigiani is presenting amazing creations, all highlights of what Parmigiani does at its best.

With these new launches Parmigiani displays the in-house high-end know-how in dials and the luxury ultimate aspect of its watches. The Tonda 1950 Galaxy showcases a magnificent Aventurine glass dial. It procures a glittering glass made in high-temperature and low-oxygen environment. When you look to the watch, you have the feeling to see the sky and the universe with its stars. The brand added 84 diamonds ti the bezel and a very beautiful White Opal to the watch crown. The look of this watch is very sophisticated yet simple and almost poetic. Under the dial, you can discover the PF702 automatic self-winding movement. It is decorated with the distinctive Côtes de Genève and you can admire it from the transparent sapphire glass back-case. Last but not least, Parmigiani adopted a black alligator strap that finishes the elegant look to the watch.

Parmigiani Fleurier is very well known for its Meteorite dials. It is a very unusual material to work with and despite of the specific look and feel, the idea of carrying a piece of the universe on your wrist sounds…. extraterrestrial. The brand has developed a full collection with great dials. 2 new dials will be added to the collection. The watches dials are crafted from an unique piece of meteorite using an unique process developed by Parmigiani Fleurier. It features “Widmanstätten patterns” that you naturally find in meteorites. Last but not least highlight for 2017, Parmigiani Fleurier reveals a new Tonda Metrographe featuring a tachometer and a chronograph. You will be able to find 2 dials variations. The movement is a beautiful 351 components mechanism, self-winding with a 42 hours power reserve. The black dial features rose gold details and the white dial received blue hands for elegance and distinction.

Top Models Body Mass index – Health Red alert!

Despite of all alerts about women under-weight in magazines, we can see that not much changed. Top Models are still underweight and some of them might also get serious health problems if they remain at that level of weight. We can see that most of feminine-fashion-lifestyle magazines are run by women, which make a complete non-sense when you see what kind of women are displayed in the glossy pages of those magazines. In order to show you how worrying the situation is, we took 10 current top models, and calculated their BMI (Body Mass Index). This will give us a clear idea of how badly nourish are these top models. The body mass index (BMI) or Quetelet index is a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of an individual. The BMI is an attempt to quantify the amount of tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bone) in an individual, and then categorize that person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on that value. However, there is some debate about where on the BMI scale the dividing lines between categories should be placed. Commonly accepted BMI ranges are underweight: under 18.5 kg/m2, normal weight: 18.5 to 25, overweight: 25 to 30, obese: over 30.

What could happen to people being under-weight? Those who are underweight are not taking in enough nutrients through their diets. Being underweight can decrease the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients, such as amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Improper absorption of vitamin D and calcium can increase the risk of developing osteoporosis, while abnormal iron absorption can lead to iron-deficiency anemia. Not getting enough nutrients can also lead to hair loss and muscle wasting. People who are underweight are more likely to get sick and develop infections than people of a healthy weight, according to registered dietitian Elena Blanco-Schumacher in an article in Today’s Dietitian in 2008. This is because being underweight is often associated with a compromised immune system. According to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, a lower BMI may also increase the risk of developing respiratory problems, like lung disease. The study looked at BMIs in Korean men and women and found that the risk of death from respiratory diseases is higher in those with low BMIs.
