The World After Covid-19: Three key things that will change forever.

0
Reading Time: 8 minutes

While four million human beings are still struggling with the unprecedented situation caused by Covid-19, experts around the world are debating about the “world post-crisis”. From the Financial Times to Forbes, The Economist, or the World Economic Forum, all experts tend to align on certain points and disagree on many others. Here are three things I believe will change forever due to pandemics.

Embracing A Full Online Life. The End Of Cash?

With home containment, people had to change their habits to a more digital life. During the past couple of month, we learned how to work from home, school our children from our living rooms and buy food and other shopping needs online. It is a very important change, especially as physical stores were closed and people were very limited on the distances they could cover.

home-office

According to Forbes, online sales increased around the world by 278% due to the virus situation. We understand why Jeff Bezos won USD 24 billion during the period. In the US, Wallmart had a growth of 460% with its mobile app for groceries. The same trend is observed in Europe and Asia. The world went online and the consumer followed. Most interesting is the fact that people took new habits and estimates say that more than 50% of consumers who adopted a more online shopping routine will not turn back to physical stores (Pymnts.com).

covid-19-online-shopping-habits

Although home containment is almost over, around 58% of online shoppers will continue their online shopping activity afterward. Consumers are committed to continuing online shopping to reduce their exposure to others amid the outbreak. According to Kantar, more than 60% of online shoppers in Europe will maintain their level of online consumption after the crisis. Consumers will fulfill essential and non-essential purchases. This will require a lot of adaptation from brands, especially the ones with a low online presence.

The online shopping game has a simple rule: You cannot find it, you will not buy it. Because of product scarcity, consumers spend more time searching for their beloved products. In some countries, Google searches have increased by 175% and even Wikipedia got a tremendous burst during the Covid-19 period. Brand will fight for the top position in the search engine result pages. SEO and SEM will be the battle fields to improve and guarantee sales. Researchgate.com evaluated that around 25% of online shoppers cannot find immediately what they are looking for. Brands were not ready for such a dramatic change and now they have a good context to improve their online footprint.

new-rules-online-shopping

On the consumer side, we are experiencing a new facet of things: The end of cash! If you cannot go to a physical store, you cannot pay cash, therefore digital wallets, credit cards, and other online payment methods have increased their activity as they are the only method to pay the purchases. Given the rise in online shopping, Business Insider Intelligence estimates that the revenue for companies processing online payments will increase from $82 billion to $138 billion between 2018 and 2024.

Would our generation see the end of cash? It is an interesting idea since the burst of digital currencies (eg: Bitcoin) and the cover-19 containment. Would this affect the world order and exchange rates? Not sure. We would see a dematerialization of wealthiness to a more digitalized world.

From Globalization To Short Local Networks

global-to-local-covid-19-rules

During the health crisis, countries around the world realized how fragile their economic model is, all dependent on China. This dependence is at the production and at the end-consumer level. Basically, China became the factory of the world. China produces for all countries at all levels of complexity and price. Is it normal to produce everything in China? When we see how fragile the system is, we might want to re-evaluate our production model to something more reasonable, more local. As expressed in Forbes magazine, the coronavirus might represent the end of China as a manufacturing hub for the world.

The US might review its production model and turn itself to something more local and closer like Mexico. Is Mexico the new China? According to Sebastian Miralles, managing partner at Tempest Capital in Mexico City, the US might transfer up to USD 15 billion of manufacturing from China to Mexico.

mexico-new-horizons

In Europe, each country might review its model as well and privilege countries like Portugal, Spain, Greece, and Eastern-Europe to become the new manufacturing hubs for the region. In a world post-covid19 where several people lost their jobs, it is a good perspective to create new jobs because of a geographic shorter supply-chain.

nike-new-factory-near-usa

If we take the example of NIKE, we can see that the sports shoe company has been talking for a number of years about digitizing its supply chain. By introducing 1’200 automated machines nearby the US, this means that lead times are cut from 60 days to 10 days. The company will also see a big reduction in shipping expenses, import duties, and risk of over-production. NIKE would reduce by 30% the total amount of steps in the process and provides much more resilience.

Health and medical care businesses are also reviewing their production model as well. 85% of all chirurgical masks are currently produced in China. This is due to historical reasons but also a cost efficient aspect. With the Covid-19 crisis, countries seemed exposed to massive insecurity because of lack of quality masks. We could wonder why each country is not producing their own masks? Why should they, right? Well, now we know.

swiss-masks-covid-19

Switzerland is one of the countries to acquire specific machines (delivered from China) to start local production. Swiss company Wernli, a company specializing in the manufacture of medical bandages in Rothrist, Aargau, is determined to start producing large-scale hygienic masks. The company’s owner, Felix Schönle declared to the newspaper Le Temps, that he had invested around CHF 100’000 (USD 102’000) on a new machine to produce these masks. The Swiss company has already ordered textile material from Germany and Eastern Europe, enough to produce 6 to 7 million masks. The company plans to hire up to ten more people to run the machine 24 hours a day. At maximum capacity, it can make 120,000 masks a day.

We All Need A Strong Health Care System

Among all the challenges we faced during this crisis, one thing seems crucial: a strong health care system. Countries with strong health care systems can survive the crisis and protect their population. This crisis has shown gaps in health systems around the world. According to one estimate from the UN, more than 5 billion people will lack access to essential health services by 2030. Those services include the ability to see a health worker, access to essential medicines, and running water in hospitals.

health-care-system-covid-19

This access is complicated by a shortage of trained healthcare workers. The 2020 State of the World’s Nursing report found that the world would need 6 million more nurses by 2030 to reach global health targets. Shortages of health care workers are felt most acutely in low- and middle-income countries.

The world currently spends approximately $7.5 trillion on health each year or 10% of global gross domestic product (GDP). While spending has increased steadily, dangerous public health gaps exist, especially in rural or conflict-ridden areas where access is difficult and infrastructure is lacking.

According to the UN study “Primary Health Care on the Road to Universal Health Coverage,” increasing spending on primary health care in just low- and middle-income countries by $200 billion annually could save 60 million lives.

The math is quite simple. Currently, the world is investing around 15% of its GDP to fight the Covid-19. In order to improve healthcare around the world in a more sustainable way, it would only require about 2% of the world’s GDP. This should motivate countries and companies to improve their health care coverage in order to prevent massive world crisis to happen in such a dramatic level. The solutions are here. It is all about fighting the right battles, convincing the right lobbies, and bringing a true political and economical change.

How many crisis of this level will the world be able to resist? Things are changing and although Covid-19 brought Greta Thunberg to silence, the world has great climate challenges to face still. The good news is that change might happen fasten than we think and in ways we would not have expected. Let’s be optimistic for the greater good.

Exclusive Interview – Emfaerie: Dj, Model, Influencer And A True Artist

Reading Time: 5 minutes

The amazing thing with the 21st century in arts is the fact that classical standards do not work anymore. They are part of cultural references but artists are today more facetted and express themselves in different manners. Allow me to introduce you to Em, also known as Emfaerie in social networks. She is an accomplished artist, Model, DJ, and true online influencer. She is a true inspiration for a new generation of artists. She has multiple facets and lives free from any judgment. She played the game of our interview.

LuxuryActivist (LA): Dear Emfaerie, first things first: how should we call you? Em, Emzilla? One of your main usernames is Emfaerie. Where this name comes from and what does it mean?
Emfaerie (EM):
My preference is Em, but emfaerie works too! I used to have a different name on my social media, but I wanted something more simple and memorable. Em for my name and faerie means ‘land of the fairies’ which is pretty much where I am most of the time.

LA: You are from the UK and now living in Spain. Why did you choose Spain and Alicante? What do you like about this place?
EM:
I’ve always wanted to move out of the UK, preferably to somewhere warmer. I have some family that moved here a few years ago and when my last relationship ended I decided it was the perfect time to give it a shot here. I love the weather and the people, the Spanish are very laid back and friendly.

LA: How travel is important to you and what motivates you to travel around the world? What other countries would you like to visit?
EM:
I think its an amazing thing to see different parts of the world and their cultures, I’ve been traveling for a few years now and have loved every trip. Meeting new people and making connections I would never make if I didn’t travel, and now that I have, I’m more motivated to travel to visit those people. The top of my list now is Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

LA: You seem a very complete artist, how would you define yourself professionally speaking?
EM:
I don’t like to put myself in one box, modeling is my primary focus right now but music, art, and entertainment are still just as important to me. If I had to define it simply I would just say artist and influencer.

LA: From a professional point of view what is your biggest dream?
EM:
To live comfortably and happy doing the things I love and help other people in the process. To mention something specific I would say playing music around the world.

LA: Who are the people you admire for their careers? Who are your inspirations?
EM:
A lot of artists and models that have built themselves from nothing, that didn’t need a record label or company to represent them.

emfaerie-pictures-profile

LA: By looking at the aesthetics presented on your Instagram account and the fact you are an active member of Suicide Girls, you represent a certain ideal of femininity. Why do you think alternative modeling became so popular?
EM:
Before alternative modeling became so big there was a very small box that models had to fit into in order to be successful. I think when alternative people started to become more common, they wanted an equal chance to have that success, and in doing so showed many other people that didn’t fit those ‘norms’ that they could do it too. It was an amazing way to showcase individuality without having to fit into a label.

LA: We can see that you have true freedom of speech and showcases yourself the way you want without limitations to any traditional standards. What is the message you wish to share as an artist and a woman?
EM:
Do not change who you are or who you want to be to try and fit into other people’s standards. Do not apologize for taking up room, you have every right to share yourself and your views the way you want to. Do things that make you happy for yourself, not anyone else.

LA: You are a true influencer in Social Media with hundreds of thousands of people following you. What are the different topics you like to talk about? We can see that on your Instagram profile you have written #mentalhealthmatters. Why it is an important topic for you and what message you would like to share?
EM:
Animal rights, sex workers’ rights, and mental health are my top topics I like to talk about. Mental health is an incredibly important topic for me, I have been through a long journey with my own mental health throughout my time growing on social media. I feel I am at a positive place in my recovery and like to share that it is possible to make it through, I hope in sharing my story it will help others with theirs and normalize talking about mental health.

LA: What can we wish you for the future?
EM:
Just to continue this journey of art, modeling, music, YouTube, and more, but overall I’m just wishing for happiness and the ability to help others.

You can follow Em online in multiple platforms, just click on the below links:

4 Luxurious Updates for Your Home

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Adding a touch of opulence to your home is never a bad thing. Luxury can be updated in many different ways, depending on how you most like to spend your time and what you would personally consider as a luxury for your home space.

Here are four great ideas for luxurious updates.

1. Create Your Bedroom Retreat

If there is one room in your home you wish to be luxurious, the bedroom should be the first choice. It’s the place you go to rest, relax and lay your head at night, so every extra touch of luxury to add comfort is going to ensure you a great night’s sleep every time and have you feeling relaxed whenever you retreat to the room.

luxury-bedroom

To make your bedroom more luxurious, concentrate on your bed first. You can upgrade the size of your bed to a king (or even queen) or perhaps even go one step further and add drapes and hangings with a four-poster – whatever luxury means to you! You should also invest in high-quality sheets and the perfect mattress, as these will completely transform the comfort levels.

You can then decorate your bedroom lavishly, whether it’s with furnishings, artwork, or luxurious wallpaper.

2. Add Value and Space With a Loft Conversion

A loft conversion is a fantastic way to build an extra luxurious room from scratch, in precisely the way you like. Your loft conversion could see your room transformed into a tranquil haven, perfect for relaxing or escaping, and you could even have a balcony fitted with open windows so that you can enjoy a sunset or two with a bottle of champagne on ice. Whatever you use your loft conversion for, do it with class and invest more in luxury.

If you need design help or inspiration, companies like Touchstone Lofts can help you.

3. Update Your Bathroom Sanctuary

Like the bedroom, the bathroom is also a place you can go to relax – which means any steps towards luxury in the bathroom will be well received. Your primary focus here should be your bathtub, as you could upgrade to have a jacuzzi bath or an extra-large bath to add hints of luxury. You could also consider extra features like a waterfall shower and waterfall taps to add classy fixtures and fittings, and add luxury through your color choices and the metals you use.

4. Have Your Own Indoor Spa

What could be more luxurious than your own private spa at home? Perfect for relaxing alone, with loved ones, or even to host a house party, spa features in the home can add a touch of opulence at any time. Consider what you would want most from a spa, whether it’s a jacuzzi bath, essential oils and massage rooms, or a place to meditate and relax with a water feature or two.

Depending on the size of your space and budget, you may even be able to fit your own private indoor pool, ideal for recreation and fitness without having to worry about being disturbed by others or weatherproofing like you would an outdoor pool.

Having an outfit that you feel confident helps you get work done in any environment. It is how you express who you are and what you stand for. It is easy to do this when the dress code is whatever you want, but in an office, it can be challenging to find a balance between the professional looks and the more personal or exciting fits.

Here are seven office outfit ideas to try out for that confidence boost you need in your work atmosphere.

Jumpsuits are a straightforward way to feel great because you throw it on and do not have to worry about matching pieces together. They are comfortable and loose and can incorporate stripes, a bold color, or a fun pattern for extra pizzazz.

Color Blocking

Bold colors mirror confidence. If you show up to a meeting with bright pairings like a red blazer over a pink top, everyone will envy that kind of eye-catching combination. No one said that all work outfits had to only contain neutral colors. Be creative with your picks and integrate your taste into the mix.

Tailored Blazer

A fitted blazer is every girl’s best friend when you work at an office. It is essential to have that you mix with an abundance of pieces. It screams powerful and makes you feel like a boss as soon as you put it on. So many women have entirely owned wearing a blazer for so long, and it’s an item that will never go out of style.

A Formal Suit

A formal suit is a sleek and straightforward way to show authority in the workspace. As long as it fits well, a suit will always have an impressive vibe, and it is vital to have at least one.

Formal Skirts

Whether it is a high waisted long leather skirt, simple pencil skirt, or a patterned flowy skirt, all formal skirts can be unique to your style and reflect the look you want that day. You can find these things at a store like Nordstrom, where you can use a Nordstrom promotion code to help get these looks.

Animal Print

Animal print is already super popular, and finding a way to incorporate it into your work outfit is a perfect way to feel more confident. You are sure to receive compliments on the leopard print blouse, cheetah print heels, or snakeskin skirt you pulled off.

Exclusive Interview with Mélisande Grivet – When clothing takes on its full meaning

Reading Time: 9 minutes

Switzerland is an amazing country where we can find outstanding talents in different domains from fashion to gastronomy and even design. Switzerland represents a true identity made of precision, quality, and attachment to heritage. These words are the promises of a great future for any business. This week, meet Mélisande Grivet, the beautiful mind behind the fashion brand Nom Commun. With a first name that can only inspire passion and creativity, Mélisande Grivet is a very talented fashion creator whose fashion is contemporary, sharp, distinctive, and responsible. Her brand, Nom Commun, is a story of clothing and materials wrapped into a lot of talent. She played the game of our interview, enjoy it.

(Pour la version française, cliquez ici.)

LuxuryActivist (LA): How did your passion for fashion start?
Mélisande Grivet (MG): Hard to say. As far as I can remember, I have always had something to do with clothes and sewing. My paternal grandmother had a very coquettish taste, she transmitted this attention to clothes to me. That said, I’m more interested in clothing and tailoring techniques than fashion itself. Fashion goes on, clothes and skills remain. At sixteen, I started working with a seamstress who was doing semi-measures in Nyon. I went there after school and on weekends. This is probably where my passion was revealed and I decided to make it my job.

LA: You were born in Lausanne. Switzerland has incredible talents that are sometimes less known to the general international public. Are your origins an influence in your work? If so, how does this translate? Is it important?
MG: I grew up between the foot of Jura mountains, Lausanne, and Nyon. I am Swiss, but I also have Italian nationality through my mother. I think I have taken rigor, precision, and discretion from Switzerland. As well as a certain approach to design. I did not speak Italian when I was little, but I bathed in this language. After my apprenticeship as a seamstress in a company, I decided to continue my studies in Ticino with the desire to learn Italian and to get closer to this country. I’m still very close to Italy. There is an art of living that influences me a lot and is felt in my way of creating. It was also between Ticino and Italy that I learned to have my clothes made by others.

LA: You started your career with beautiful brands like Max Mara and more recently Emyun. Why did you launch your own brand?
MG:
I always wanted to have my clothesline. But it took a while before I felt ready. I learned a lot from working for Max Mara. Working for a large group is exciting. I had access to means that I would not have had otherwise. I worked for one of the brand’s styling department, which means that I was at the heart of the creation. I was able to work with the development teams and I met exceptional suppliers. After a few years, I wanted to see other things. I came back to Switzerland where I worked for several small brands. I launched collections, especially for Emyun. And one day, I thought to myself that the next collection that I would launch would be mine, I was ready to launch my own brand.
Nom Commun was born from a desire to be able to do things my way, to give a central place to clothing and manufacturing. Nom Commun was also born in reaction to a textile industry that becomes dehumanized and wastes a lot, both resources and time. Barely at the shop window, a collection is already discounted. In the end, nothing has value anymore.

What also sets me apart from other brands is that I mainly produce in Switzerland.”- Mélisande Grivet

LA: In a very saturated Fashion landscape, what is NOM COMMUN different from other brands?
MG:
Nom Commun is a story of clothes and materials. I design clothes according to the materials I source. I mainly work from stocks of existing fabrics. These are not scraps of fabrics, but full fabric lengths not used by productions.
Working from the material, necessarily conditions the work of creation, but it also determines production. This is why my pieces are produced in limited series. I produce an average of fifteen pieces per fabric, it’s quite exclusive. What also sets me apart from other brands is that I mainly produce in Switzerland.

LA: Looking back, what were the underestimated aspects between what you learn at school and the reality of this job?
MG:
It’s been a while since I finished my studies. The courses go too fast on companies’ work. Whether to launch one’s brand or when working for others, I find it important to have a market deep understanding and not just a superficial overview. If possible thanks to professionals confronted with reality. We often forget that clothing is an industry that operates according to industrial rules, far from the image that fashion conveys.
Sometimes I go over to “the other side” teaching some apprentices. I often tell them that the most important thing is also to learn to listen and observe customers.

LA: How are you developing your brand today? What are the biggest challenges?
MG:
In two years, everything went very quickly. From my first collection, I was fortunate to have been supported by stores that trusted me. This allowed me to make room for myself, but above all to be in contact with customers. I wanted to take the time to properly define and produce my collection. It also gave me a better understanding of the market.
I must now focus on communication and stabilization of the structure. But the biggest challenge comes from the way I work. As I only work with fabrics from surplus production, I am depending on the quantities available. I am starting to reach a production level that I will have to exceed while ensuring that the collection is consistent.

“The fair price, in my opinion,n is the one that allows me to properly pay the people who work for Nom Commun.” – Mélisande Grivet

LA: How do you reconcile styling and commercial reality? How do you determine the right price for a piece of clothing?
MG:
The commercial part has always been present. In large groups, it is not the stylists who decide what will be produced. There is always the moment when the salespeople reject half of your proposals. You have to learn to live with it and keep the sale in mind. In small structures, we learn to change caps. It is not easy to reconcile styling and commercial reality. No doubt my training and production experience taught me to bridge the gap between the two. That said, I work a lot instinctively, especially when it comes to placing parts in the store. Over time, I got to know their needs.
I prefer clothes that you can wear everyday and that you can make more sophisticated by mixing and accessorizing them. This allows me to speak to a relatively large clientele.
Setting the price of a piece of clothing is a science that can only be learned through practice. The price depends on many factors, material, labor, development and sponsorship costs, fixed costs. This gives a cost price which is then adjusted within the collection to keep a certain logic in the prices. There are also psychological thresholds not to be exceeded. It forces me to make choices, sometimes you have to simplify a model, other times you have to take it out of production. But often, this allows to offer some bolder pieces at affordable prices.
The fair price in my opinion is the one that allows me to properly pay the people who work for Common Name.

LA: What novelties are you working on at the moment?
MG:
Right now, I’m starting production for winter 2020 and I’m working on the summer collection 2021. I’m happy with the winter collection. There are very beautiful models. With the current health crisis, I have to adapt. Should we produce less? Differently? How sales will work. I want to give more longevity to my collections and that people can sense it. I like the idea that a piece of clothing is always new depending on when you wear it or how you associate it with other pieces of your wardrobe.

Nom-Commun-Spring-summer-2020
Nom-Commun-Spring-Summer-2020-2

LA: What do you think of what is called “Fast-Fashion” and the criticisms made of this juicy model for certain ready-to-wear brands?
MG:
I think it’s time to go back to something more reasonable and stop the waste. Fast-fashion is based on a sick economic model. I have a feeling of saturation. There is nothing more surprising. I think we have to stop devaluing products all the time. We tend to devalue everything. As soon as they arrive in shop windows, the collections are discounted. By breaking the benchmarks, nothing has any value, even customers have no value.
Fast-fashion works so tightly that it endangered itself. All it takes is a grain of sand, a production halt, a recession for the losses to be colossal. In the end, these brands will have managed to devalue themselves.

LA: What can we wish you for the future?
MG:
In the immediate future, I am delighted that the shops can reopen quickly. They need to work and we need to be in contact with customers. This is what I like about this job too, the contact with people. Clothes start to live when being worn, not just on glossy paper.

Nom Commun is a fantastic brand that represents a new era for fashion design and manufacturing. Mélisande Grivet has a passionate soul and she does what she does because she believes in it. I wish more brands would do the same. But let’s be optimistic.

Moon phases in watch-making: measuring life with time.

Reading Time: 7 minutesWatchmaking is a beautiful blend of technical mastery and poetry. Watchmakers are often considered as artists and from their ingenuity comes marvelous creations that keep your time. Some of the watches can do much more. What we usually call complications, bring an added value to the measure of time. This month, our watch blog decided to talk about a very interesting and one of the oldest complications in watch-making: the Moon Phases.

Moon Phases and the measurement of life

The lunar phase or phase of the moon is the shape of the illuminated (sunlit) portion of the Moon as seen by an observer on Earth. The lunar phases change cyclically as the Moon orbits the Earth, according to the changing positions of the Moon and Sun relative to the Earth. The Moon’s rotation is tidally locked by the Earth’s gravity, therefore the same lunar surface always faces Earth. This face is variously sunlit depending on the position of the Moon in its orbit. Therefore, the portion of this hemisphere that is visible to an observer on Earth can vary from about 100% (full moon) to 0% (new moon). A full cycle lasts for 29 and half days. While the sun position in the sky across the year will determine seasons, day and night, the moon phases will measure life. When men decided to measure life passing by they naturally aligned with the moon phases as it was a regular phenomenon happening through a cycle of 29,5 days. In Western culture, the four principal lunar phases are new moon, first quarter, full moon, and third quarter (also known as last quarter). These are the instants when the Moon’s apparent geocentric celestial longitude minus the Sun’s apparent geocentric celestial longitude is 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°, respectively. Each of these phases is instantaneous, lasting theoretically zero time, although they occur at slightly different times when viewed from different points on the Earth.

Moon-phases-explanation

A “new moon” occurs when the moon and sun are in alignment on the same side of the Earth and thus there is no moon visible to us. As the moon travels through its monthly orbit, more of its surface becomes illuminated by the sun — known poetically as “waxing”. The second phase, known as the “first quarter”, is when the right-hand side of the moon is in the sun’s light. Next comes the “full moon” when the entire surface is lit up. Then it moves to the “last quarter” when the left-hand side is visible — waning — until it finally goes back to a new moon again.

In a certain sense, moon phases are quite poetic as it drives the cycle of nature (thanks to the moon gravity effects) like oceans tides and rising sap. It was also the most accurate system in the old times to measure the month passing by due to the length of s full cycle. So in the 19th century when watch-makers started getting really into complications, the moon phase was an interesting challenge for the pocket watch and then translated into the wrist-watch later in the 20th century.

Moon phases, how it works?

Some people tend to say that the heart of  a mechanical watch is about gears, wheels and linkage. Of course these elements are part of what is required to make a watch movement work. Nevertheless I would say that the most important element of a watch movement is the ingenuity of the watch-maker. Moon phases are a very interesting design element on a watch dial. Sometimes in the emptiness of a watch dial graphic construction, the moon phases complication brings a eye-catching element into the overall look of the watch. It is an open window into great mastery and precision. How it works? Well, if you open the watch and remove the dial, you will generally discover  a disc containing all the different phases of the moon cycle.

moon-phases-disc-watchmaking

Sometimes it is just 2 complete full moon that will be cut b the dial aperture or in other cases each moon phase will be printed into the disc. This disc simply rotates one complete cycle every 29,5 days. What we would call the “moon-disc” is driven by 59 tooth gear that is rotated by a mechanical finger. It would be easy a part from one single important detail: the moon is not precisely doing its cycle in 29,5 days. To be more accurate (which is normal in watch-making) the moon is accomplishing its cycle in 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. So in order to match this precision level, the moon-disc went from a 59 tooth to s 135 tooth gear in high-end watches. This increases accuracy beyond a lifetime. Every sophisticated moon phase complication will loose one single day in a period of time equivalent to 122 years.

The interest of measuring astral events with mechanics is not new. In the 14th century, all the works of Giovanni Dondi dell’Orologio brought a lot of understanding into the measurement of time. One of his highlights is his amazing Astrarium. The Astrarium, which he designed and built over a period of 16 years, was a highly complex astronomical clock and planetarium, constructed only 60 or so years after the very first mechanical clocks had been built in Europe, and demonstrated an ambitious attempt to describe and model the solar system with mathematical precision and technological sophistication.

Astrarium-Giovanni-Dondi-dell-Orologio

On May 17, 1902, an archaeologist named Valerios Stais discovered a lump of oxidated material with in it a mechanism with cogwheels that had been recovered from a shipwreck near Antikythera. This mechanism, known as the Antikythera mechanism, was recently redated between [150 to 100 BC]. Extensive study of the fragments, using X-rays, have revealed enough details (gears, pinions, crank) to enable researchers to build partial replicas. Engraved on the major gears are the names of the planets (such as Venus), which leaves little doubt as to the intended use of the mechanism.

Anticythere

Probably the first pocket watch containing a moon phase complication night be this 1605 watch made by H.Roberts. The lunar/solar differential would be 13.312 thus when moon indicator has rotated 13.312 times the moon image has rotated 2.06 times giving a lunar phase of 29.48 days. In the middle a rotating silver disc 1-29 for moon’s age. Rotating gilt-brass disc at the centre engraved 1-12 1-12 and with an aspectarium in which is an aperture to show the phase of the moon.

So we can see that watchmakers and engineers have been fascinated by the measurement of time as well as by the measurement of astral phenomenon. Moon phase is a beautiful and poetic complication giving some soul to your timepiece. Here are 3 Moon Phases watches that you might not know about it. All three are amazing watches made by true luxury watch-makers.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Your wedding day should be the happiest day of your life, but for many women, the idea of being the centre of attention and having everyone look at you for an entire day can be terrifying. Most brides will be self-conscious to a certain extent on their wedding day, but if it is leading to anxiety and restless nights then you may want to find ways that you can reduce this anxiety while making sure that you look and feel your best on the big day. Here are a few helpful tips which will hopefully allow you to overcome low self-esteem and feel fantastic on your wedding day.

Speak To A Therapist

Speaking to a therapist if you struggle with low self-esteem is a smart idea, not only for your wedding day but also beyond this. This can be helpful for identifying why you feel the way that you do, identifying what could be helpful on the day (and in life in general) but also simply for talking to someone about your difficulties.

Be Honest With Loved Ones

It is also important to communicate with your loved ones and to let them know your concerns. Your partner, family, maid-of-honour and the rest of the wedding party will be there to provide support now and, on the day, and could help to find ways to make the day easier for you.

Practice

A lot of anxiety on the wedding day (and life in general) occurs with unfamiliarity because it is different to normal. Therefore, it is helpful to practice regularly in the run-up to the wedding, including wearing your wedding dress, having your hair and makeup done, posing for photographs and walking down the aisle.

Lead A Healthy Lifestyle

If you are self-conscious then a smart and long-term solution is to take action through leading a healthy lifestyle – this can help to improve your appearance along with your physical and mental wellbeing. This should include:

  • Regular exercise
  • A healthy diet
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Finding ways to relax
  • Avoiding too much alcohol
  • Not smoking and avoiding other harmful substances

Consider A Hair Transplant

If your hair is a source of self-consciousness (as it is for many brides), then you might want to consider a hair transplant. This can be a fantastic solution for the wedding day and beyond and help you to both look and feel your best on your special day. Modern techniques are highly advanced, so this can be an easy and pain-free experience.

Remember That Everyone Is There For You

It is always daunting to be the centre of attention with a large group of people, but you must also keep in mind that you are surrounded by friends and family and everyone is there to celebrate with you and your partner. This means that you should be yourself, try to relax and embrace this special day.

Hopefully, these tips will help you to overcome anxiety in the run-up and on the day so that you can have the happiest day of your life while looking and feeling your best.

Luxury City Centre Apartments are the New Trend

0
Reading Time: 4 minutes

For a long time now, luxury city centre apartments have been on the rise in terms of trends, and with a record number of young professionals looking at city-centre living, it is becoming more popular as the days go on. Plus, the older generation is now moving into more compact, cheaper spaces where amenities are available such as a swimming pool or gym. The convenience of these facilities being within buildings means that while people are paying more for rent, they are getting a luxurious life for an affordable price.

Liverpool and Manchester are popular cities for these city-centre apartments since the property prices are on the rise and so is rental demand. Yet, many investors can still acquire below-market value prices for buy to let properties.RWinvest is an award-winning property company that offer luxury apartments such as their Parliament Square development in Liverpool which is due to complete soon. The Parliament Square building will feature an indoor roof-top spa, sauna, spa and other luxurious amenities at no extra cost to the tenant.

Are you interested in learning why there is a huge demand for city-centre luxury apartments and what we can expect in the coming years for those who invest in these properties? We’ve listed some reasons why this city-centre living trend will only continue to grow in exciting cities across the UK and the world.

Compact living is cheap

Having an apartment is a compact way of living. However, it is also a lot cheaper than renting or purchasing a large home. Why is this? Most of the time, the rent will be less expensive. However, it also means you don’t have as many possessions as you would if you were to buy a 3 or 4 bedroom home. Most smaller apartments feature a kitchen, living/dining room combined, and bedrooms as well as a bathroom. Only having limited rooms you don’t have to purchase unnecessary items to fill up space within a home. Plus, since the place you’re living in is smaller, the bills will be lesser, and thus you’re living a more compact and affordable life. The affordability is often something that attracts young professionals to apartments as they don’t need too much space but enjoy the independence of having their own place to live that is near the city.

 Amenities make life easier

luxury-apartments-amenities

Who can deny that having a luxurious swimming pool on your doorstep as well as a spa and other amenities makes life a little better? People are looking towards luxurious living apartments within city centres because they make our lives a lot easier. If the apartment building has a gym that residents can make use of for free, there is practically no excuse why you wouldn’t go and get fit. Plus, you’re not having to pay for facilities that are far from your building either. Ultimately, it’s down to making your life a lot easier, and this is why so many people prefer living in these luxury apartment blocks.

Proximity to restaurants, bars and workplaces

People are turning towards city centre living because it means they can have their life within proximity to one another. Living inner city means you can walk downstairs in your apartment block and be in less than a 5-minute walk from restaurants, bars, workplaces and lots of other exciting places (however, this may be a little untrue for those living in London, it is true for those living in smaller cities such as Leeds and Liverpool). It’s convenient and affordable to walk everywhere, and you won’t even need a car if you’re living in the city centre either which means another expense is off your list.

The Hottest Fashion Trends for Spring 2020 (and How to Recreate Them)

0
Reading Time: 7 minutes

Spring 2020 has been an… interesting season, to say the least. Instead of celebrating this time of year by enjoying the sunshine with our friends and loved ones, most of us have spent our time cooped up indoors, taking shelter from a global pandemic.

While COVID-19 might have taken away our weekend plans, our favorite sports, and even our children’s school schedules, there’s one aspect of everyday life that seems impervious to its effects: fashion. The spring 2020 trends have still arrived! If you want a little luxury in these challenging times, make sure you recreate some of these amazing looks.

Upcycling

Many people are spending their days in quarantine learning new hobbies – soapmaking, cooking, crocheting, etc. And, in a bizarre case of fashion clairvoyance, it appears that the “homemade” look has already been on some designers’ radars!

Home-made-trend-Jonathan-Anderson-Loewe

Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton created a whole collection based on recycled scraps of fabric. Jonathan Anderson’s designs for Loewe were inspired by “the poetry of craftsmanship.” It appears that everyone is in the upcycling mood this season, and the looks they’ve come up with are truly unique.

How to Recreate This Look

Not a seamstress? Don’t worry; you can still sport the upcycled fashion look. Look for vintage pieces, or even items with lots of lace, crocheted elements, or classic patterns (think the 1960s or 70s). These styles are making a big comeback this season, and they’ll instantly give your look some homemade charm.

Highlighter Hues

Spring is always a time for color. After many long months of the bleak, white winter, it’s refreshing to see the skies clear and the flowers bloom again! And this spring, many designers took their love of color to the next level with bold and vivid looks in highlighter-bright shades, reminiscent of 2019’s color schemes.

Tom-Ford-2020-High-hue

Everyone, from Courreges and Marni to Tom Ford and Balenciaga, had something colorful to showcase on the runway for this season. Yellows, greens, pinks, oranges – no hue was off limits! Even if you’re stuck at home this spring, this is a great time to brighten your day (and your closet) with some colorful pieces.

How to Recreate This Look

The key to looking luxurious in these highlighter shades is BALANCE. Stick to solid colors (colorblocking is a great option if you want a little more variety) and keep your accessories neutral (black, white, or tan). This will let your outfit speak volumes without being too “loud.”

Tiered Skirts

Chanel’s spring 2020 collection was all about femininity. The fashion powerhouse debuted looks with long maxi skirts that featured ruffled tiers, paired with sweet tops with puffy sleeves. This look is a lot of fun – it’s simple, chic, and totally twirl-able!

How to Recreate This Look

You might feel like a tiered maxi is too elegant for your everyday errands, but that’s simply not true! These skirts are delightfully versatile; you can dress them up with an elegant blouse and heels or tone things down with a simple tee or tank and sandals.

(Besides, after months on lockdown, we all deserve to feel a little fancy.)

Sequins

Spring is usually a time for celebrating. There are proms to attend, weddings to celebrate, and a million other events where you can dress up and show off.

sequins-dress

While our social calendars may be lacking at the moment, eventually we’ll get to celebrate again – and if designers like Ralph Lauren and Eckhaus Latta have anything to say about it, we’ll all be doing it in sequins.

How to Recreate This Look

Spring 2020 proves that sequins aren’t just for showgirls or gala gowns. The shimmery slip dresses and suits we saw on the runway proved that any look is better with a little glitter. Just make sure to pair your sequins with a simple silhouette. This will make your look understated and very chic.

Short Shorts (and Long Shorts)

The warm spring weather is often a time for us to show a little more skin. For spring 2020, designers were all about legs, showing off their models’ gams in a wide range of short styles.

Some, like Ferragamo and Rag & Bone, were all about high-waisted hot pants that barely covered the models’ thighs. Others, like Bottega Veneta, Chloe, and Givenchy embraced the more modest Bermuda short (which extends just beyond the knee). These short options give you many different styles to play with throughout this spring and summer.

short-shorts-2020-trends

How to Recreate This Look

Whether you decide to wear sexy short shorts or chic Bermudas, it’s important to pair the look with the right shoe. For example, a pair of knee-high boots can make your hot pants even hotter (and keep you from feeling a little TOO exposed when you walk around). You can also pair your hot pants with opaque tights and heels for a subtly sexy look.

For Bermuda shorts, grab a pair of flat shoes to complete your look. Bermuda shorts can sometimes make you appear short (especially if you’re not particularly leggy to begin with), so keeping your feet flat can give your look a little more balance.

Leather

Leather is usually a fall and winter trend. There’s a good reason for it: this thick material is great for keeping away the winter chill. But in spring 2020, it appears that leather may have found its time to shine!

Many designers, from Marni to Coach 1941, incorporated leather elements into their spring collections. It appeared in many forms – 70s-style vests, long trench coats, brightly-colored pencil skirts – but one thing was consistent across every look: leather is a great way to add some edge to your breezy spring wardrobe.

How to Recreate This Look

Leather elements can help you dress up your classic spring looks, adding some edge or sophistication (depending on the leather piece). Consider pairing your basic white tee with a leather (or faux-leather) A-line skirt. Throw on a leather vest over your favorite pantsuit. This will add some dynamics to your look without making it feel too “heavy” for the season.

NSFW-wear

Another popular trend on the spring 2020 runway was looks that leaned toward the risqué. Proenza Schouler, Mugler, Michael Kors, and many others debuted shamelessly sexy looks in a wide range of styles, from lingerie as outerwear to office-style suits that were decidedly NSFW.

Frankly, we LOVE this! The sheer details, cutout elements, and exposed corset boning on many of these outfits is just edgy enough to turn heads and stop traffic – and isn’t that what great fashion is all about?

Mugler-F-W-2020-21-6

How to Recreate This Look

If you’re up for a bold look that’s going to get attention, consider letting a deep v-neck top (or even a lacy bra top) peek out from under your office-appropriate blazer. This look embraces your flirty and feminine side, while still making you look like a boss babe (the best of both worlds).

We’re living through strange times right now, where nothing seems very certain. But you can take comfort in knowing that fashion will always be here to cheer you up and make you look (and feel) your best. So, while you’re stuck inside, visit your favorite online boutiques and revitalize that closet! We look forward to seeing your styles when we meet again.
