Under the direction of creative director Casey Cadwallader, MUGLER’s Fall Winter 2022–23 collection marks the house’s return to the Paris catwalk. A cast of unusual personalities inhabits the cavernous, industrial hangar known as The Grande Halle de la Villette in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, personifying the real whiplash of contemporary society. Cadwallader re-materializes the MUGLER experience after a two-year break during which he pushed the limits of fashion cinema in a provocative, era-defining suite of short films. On the fragrance side, MUGLER offers a new version of Angel, the iconic fragrance, called Angel Elixir. The Angel you were not expecting.

With the new Fall Winter 2022-23, MUGLER reveals a new proposal that embodies powerful femininity. From slicing thighs, pelvis and décolleté, the MUGLER woman is a modern warrior whose armour is made of satin, leather and lace. The lines are sharp and edgy. Casey Cadwallader proposes a contemporary design allowing solid construction and fluid movement to coexist. Interesting archetypes are revealed: boned biker jackets, spiral denim shorts, parkas and topcoats collide with intricate lingerie, silver fringe, ruched peasant sleeves and corseted denim in ensembles that evolve the phenomenon of the MUGLER bodysuit far and beyond its origins.
Both strange and familiar, their unapologetic individuality and freedom of expression remain the pulsing lifeblood of the MUGLER attitude and silhouette. Breaking the 4th wall to invite voyeurism and the serendipitous theatre of fashion, backstage preparations and technical infrastructure become vital props in the hyperbole – amplifying the tropes of the fashion show in vignettes that preserve the urgent sense of spectacle intrinsic to MUGLER.
Contrasting their attenuated forms, exaggerated bow volumes, flared tulle cuffs, and draped cascades embody the prowess of a silhouette engineered in 360°. Adorning the body, aggressive chromed and resin jewellery evokes blades, thorns, and twisting spikes, whilst armoured sandals or knife-point pumps and boots extend the season’s sensual geometries with perpetual inertia. One of my highlights of this season is Eva Herzigová cat walking again for the brand.
Since the founder of MUGLER, Thierry Mugler, passed away last year, the Brooklyn Museum in New York City dedicated Thierry Mugler: Couturissime, an exhibition in his honour that emphasized his significance and presence throughout 20th-century fashion. Mugler, renowned for his avant-garde architectural creations, will be sorely missed in the fashion world. Nonetheless, Casey Cadwallader, who was chosen to serve as Mugler’s Creative Director in 2017, has established himself as a significant player. The show combined traditional runways walking and a technological aspect that featured models on a moving stand with a camera, allowing for more artistry and variation in their performances.

The new fragrance has an interesting start with a bright accord of Pink pepper CO2 extract. It introduces a rich Muglerian bouquet of white flowers blending suave orange blossom absolute heart and spicy ylang ylang essence. The French luxury brand also announced Hunter Schafer as the new face of Angel, starting with this new fragrance. Hunter Schafer is an American model, actress, and LGBTQ rights activist. For her activism against the HB2, Teen Vogue listed Schafer on its “21 Under 21” list in 2017. She made her acting debut as transgender high school student Jules Vaughn in the HBO teen drama television series Euphoria (2019–present), which earned her critical praise and nominations for a Shorty Award, an MTV Movie & TV Award, and a Dorian Award. She provided the voice of popular high school student Ruka Watanabe in the English dub of the anime film Belle (2021) and will portray Tigris Snow in the film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023).
2023 is a great year for MUGLER. The start was already 100% pure adrenaline and we can only dare to imagine what surprises the luxury French house has prepared for the incoming future.
